Mr Slick
Just looking for some advice as what are considered the safest. I hear most (lime wire etc) are stuffed with spyware and viruses. What's the deal? Thanks
LT.Diablo
Most will have spyware etc but if you're careful you should be ok, for example I've used Limewire for about 2 years now and I've never gotten a virus etc from it, just take care not to download suspicious files . dills
Yeah, I've had Limewire for the longest time and have had no problems, probably because I never download exe's. I'm assuming that you can't get viruses from images and videos etc. Or Can you?
K^2
I believe, .wmv file can launch browser to a page that might contain a malevolent script. It might be capable of running scripts on its own, but I'm not so sure. This is not very often used for virus propagation, but a lot of these files are just there for advertisement. Avoid downloading .wmv files on the P2P. .avi, .mpg, and .mp3 are SAFE. Don't worry about these files. The only danger is RIAA or similar catching you downloading something you shouldn't be. Be very careful with .exe files. In fact, just don't download them. If you downlaod any kind of software, make sure you downlaod a good archive. Preferably, something you can verify against a site you trust. Sites that release their software via P2P will give you image/archive size and some sort of a hash. Find some software that will do the hash checks for you. And my personal favorites for P2P are eMule (runs on old eDonkey net) and uTorrent of the bit-torrent net. Both can be set to work on an encrypted netork, which will help you keep your ISP from interfering. Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns. nlitement
Well, most people download highly repacked junk in crappy networks like Gnutella. If you really want to be great, then download scene releases in their intact form only. For bigger files: torrent (with µTorrent), for little files: DC (with DC++). Lawley
what you generally have to look out for is zip/exes that are supposed to be big games/programs, and they show up at like 1mb files, you don't generally get virus's if there like 500mb only fake name sh*te. i've found torrents are the most reliable as you can read comments about them whether they have viruses or are fake, which is generally rare. lesfleanut
BT + trusted trackers + peer guardian = fairly safe.
