"We're currently planning to deliver SP3 for Windows XP in the first half of CY2008. This date is preliminary, and we don't have any more details to share at this time."

Hopefully we wil see some new improvements and maybe a new update for DirectX.

Well I was reading on another website that Microsoft have also decided to extend support for XP up to 2012, which will be about the time that Vista will become bareable, and yes I did go there.

If we were to get another update to DirectX for XP, hopefully upto DX10, then games that were thought to be only good for Vista should then be able to work then on XP, as that was pretty much the only advantage to Vista over XP, becuase other than that, Vista's just a really badly coded theme for XP... well that's my onion.

As you can tell, I've got no plans to think about Vista yet

Microsoft has been planning a 3th service pack for some time now.

As for Vista, I have Vista and XP on my machine, and Vista is very bareable.

I've had no problems besides full support for my Soundblaster, which is supposedly coming soon.

Every day I use XP less and less, and I love my DX10 graphics.

nVidia's Head Demo + 8800 GTX + Vista = Amazing graphics.

Stop complaining about Vista, most newer games I have run without a hitch, and with that Performance and Reliablily pack, I'm getting better fps, too.

Linux ftw.

Vista rawks at the moment IMO, I have it with the Performance and Reliability Pack, and I don't use XP anymore, and the only problems I'm getting are because my older internal Sound hasn't had updated drivers (It runs well if I put the using Compatibility Mode) And Only Problems are recent Static on it, and that *might* be excess heat.

yeah seriously Windows 98' i have on my olde' school laptop....the most stable platform i've run on.

So i don't see the XP running it's course for many years to come, i figure i'll have my kids in high school at least before it starts getting hurt.....and i don't even have kids yet wink.gif

But also it would be a shame as i just had a great comp put together with XP, and i wouldn't want to do an switch/upgrade. wink.gif

As far as I understand, it's not possible to get DX10 on XP because there are things that are fundamentally different between the two OSes and how each handles the API. Sure, there's a hack out there that will let you run DX10 games on XP, but it supposedly only works as a wrapper for DX9 so you won't have DX10 graphics.

But yeah, I have no intentions of ever moving on to Vista. Rumor is that Vista is a half-baked version of what Longhorn was intended to be. In fact, I even read a while back that MS plans to have the next OS out in 2009. Knowing how inept MS is at making software, it'll probably be more like 2014.

Same goes for this service pack 3. SP2 came out about 3 years ago? It takes 4 years to release a new service pack now? ffs.

I'd have to agree with this. I won't be switching to Vista in a long time.

Call me paranoid, but I'll stay away from SP3 for a while after release. I wouldn't put it past M$ to sabotage XP just to boost their Vista sales.

I believe it will be DirectX9.d which would be more feasible. Since XP cannot support DX10 GFX's hardware which use Shader Model 4.0. But hopefully they will give us something better then what we have now.

New? I hope you didn't spend much money on that. With those specs, your laptop is quite outdated.

As for Vista, I got it on my new computer, Home Premium version (32bit).

The main problems I have are

- internet and networking issues.

It's hard to link up to a computer using XP through a network.

Since I "fixed" that, my (wireless) internet cuts out about every other day so I need to restart the computer to get it working again. It's odd because Firefox/IE stops working, but if I have a messenger program or torrent program open, they still download.

- Sound cut out, forgot the fix but I eventually found it.

- Some program compatibility issues (AutoCad05 [works, need to run in XP Sp2 mode, as Administrator]... some other minor ones, no big problem there)

Other than that, it's been smooth sailing so far. The above issues were (and for the first one, still is) annoying. But I do like the way you navigate menus and stuff, and it does look a lot sleeker. No issue with graphics or anything, Vista doesn't seem to lag the computer what so ever (I do have a 2.4Ghz Duo Core 2, and 2gb of ram though, so that helps).

I've had 2 large updates for Vista in the last 2-3 days... they must be working some things out.

Another Windows XP Service Pack 3 (build 3205) is released for beta testers.

I've installed it on my desktop.

Funny that i recognized that MS Paint acts like in windows 95 - when you make a print screen and you copy that to Paint, what is having larger paper than copied picture is, then Paint isn't automatically resizing

paper to fit with picture...

EDIT: I might be insane, but this seems to have better performance... tounge.gif
