Otter
Sorry if this is taken as another rant against the powers that be - it's not meant to be. I saw Digital Evil was banned the other day. Mortukai banned a while ago. Demarest as well. Now I'm not arguing the validity of these banninations, but it seems like there's a bit of Haussmanization going on here. Is there a general push to clean up the forums? It's one thing to say that these characters were all skirting with banning for a long time now, but the fact that they have now begun to get flushed out seems like a few nooses are being tightened. Assholes who have gotten away with being assholes for ages are no longer being put up with. I applaud this, but I think it should come with a general warning, before we lose too many more great members to their own hubris.
saintdave
True but I wonder how many "general warnings" the members mentioned actually got? I'd suspect they were given fair opportunity to clean up their act of face the consequences and sadly (in some cases) they were banned.
Tsuroki
Coincidences, I believe, more than anything. As far as I know there's no real plot to crack down on the community. The three individuals you listed, as well as their bans, were separate and unrelated. Truth of the matter is that the majority of staff are far too lazy (myself included) to work as one unit. Preplanned extermination of troublesome members takes too much time and effort. Heh heh. dave is also right. All of those who got banned had a sh*tload of chances to take a step back and think about what they were doing. If they decided to keep on chugging along doing their thang, well, it's their problem in the end.
Waddy
Whats the difference? Great members you say? Why did they get banned then? why did some get banned a few times? The rules are the rules, and the people you have mentioned will have been banned for a reason. Did you see Mortukai's flaming? That acceptable around here these days is it? Not sure what your getting at Otter, Why should the rules be different for 'great' members?

Otter
Now hold on a god damned second, Waddy. Did you even read my post? Great people can do bad things. I never suggested that people should be given special treatment - for all intents are purposes, THEY ALREADY WERE being given special treatment. I think Tsuro set it straight for me - that it was just a coincidence - but it seemed to me that the bad boys were all getting cut around the same time. I think new mods, like STM in particular, are partly the reason, and again, so you don't try to hump my leg again Waddy, I applaud their decisions. But by all means, let's turn this into a "show your support for the staff by bashing the topic starter" thread!

I think what Otter is trying to get at is that if the mods have decided to start cracking down on members that are pushing the limits a bit too often, then he wouldn't mind a little announcement that that is taking place, so the members that know they have been getting away with things know to clean up their act before it's too late. Mokiesmoky
No let's not bash Otter. I don't get it though, can't a mod ask other mods, or 'team-up' to decide whether to ban someone instead of just banning them yourself? What if you're biased and you hate the guy because he said something to you, but another mod actually likes the guy because he's nice around him. Waddy
I just dont see why it could even be seen as a crackdown. Im sure the 3 mentioned were very straight forward bannings. Like you said, they were on thin ice as it was. They were pretty obvious.
GT-1
There doesn't need to be an announcement because nothing has changed. As Tsuroki said, its just a coincidence a few members got banned in a short time. Fact is those rules aren't here to be broken, its easier not to break them than to go out of your way to break them. ceedj
before we lose too many more great members to their own hubris. This is the part I don't get. You're saying we should warn idiots who just happen to also contribute in a meaningful way? A big sign that says "MASS BANNINGS AHEAD - DON'T BE A DORK!!!"? Sorry, but I don't see the point of letting people know that they're on the bubble for being stupid. I AM all for the aforementioned rejects getting themselves nuked; if they can't figure it out, then that's what they get. Just my two cents; not "bashing" you at all. I'm actually not against democracy though. I'm against things I think are f*cking stupid. I think this is f*cking stupid. - Sweets
TenaciousD.
End of the day, it doesn't really matter if you joined in 2003 or 2007. The rules are there for a reason and those who do not follow them should be able to face the consequences and unless they improve there attitude get banned. I think if you are at a place long enough that constantly has new additions who do not have the same experience then an attitude of 'i'm better then this guy' would develop and unless these members can learn to not lash out at members because of this then they should not have a place in the community. Otter
No worries, Ceedj. If you don't get what I mean by bashing, check out Waddy's post. Well, the way I saw it was like this: these guys were given an amount of leniency, and now it's being taken away. Arguably, they should have never been given any leniency to begin with (Dem, for example) but they were, in my eyes anyhow, being treated a little differently because of their contributions to the forum. I mean, banning them obviously sends out the message "enough is enough," but if it is part of a larger crackdown (apparently it is not, as both Tsuro and GT have said) then I figured a heads up would be nice. I'm not saying douchebags deserve a helping hand. But I'll tell you this - I'd never watch PEDs again, if you were banned, and I'd miss it. I'll probably never discuss films with with Digital again, because my MSN contact list is already about 5000 names too long, and I'll never get a chance to pick Mort's brain again. So yeah, if a crackdown were the case, a banner topic in the Announcements saying something to the effect of "MASS BANNINGS AHEAD - DON'T BE A DORK!!!" would be a nice gesture. A lot of people lack the social skills to tell when they're on the verge of forum death, because even though their karma logs are ten screens long they're still here! Just thinking out loud here, Ceedj. I find the whole process rather fascinating... it's a miniature society with all the little intricacies that go along with it. Saggy
When it comes to Mortukai and Dem, I'll agree that those two really sealed their own fate. What about Digital Evil? From what he tells me anuj banned him for posting in his gang's shout box the wrong way. I don't know if he's adding or taking away from that story, and his attitude has been a little argumentative towards some people, but I hardly think the hole he was digging for himself was big enough for a mod to throw him in just yet, if you know what I mean. Vanzant
My post may or may not fit in so much with the actual topic, but my stand on people new or old that's always getting away with sh*t and being an asshole to other members is only because everyone let's them. If a certain member is going around posting bullsh*t and being a jerk sometimes it's up to the rest of us to point that out. I have reported many Members for thier actions, and most often i'm sure there's results. There are what? Over 20 sections to post in, so the Mods and Admins aren't going to catch every single post on the boards. I think whats happened recently is more people are discovering this option. In my opinion there are Two types of "flaming" ones against the rules, the other isn't so much. If a topic starter asks questions about cheat codes for one of the Grand Theft Auto topics and the first reply is "OMFG U N00B CHEATS R FOR f*ckWADS WHO HAS NO LYFE LOL" That's off-topic, not needed and highly unnessasary. Posts like those need to be repoerted to a Mod. If I post after that guy and tell him to Get the f*ck out and stay the f*ck out of the topic since he didn't have any info and then I do my best to answer his question, I have succeded and my post isn't offensive. You have to pick and choose your posts wisely on most forums, some people just don't realise that. Those who don't usually end up losing thier posting privilges. Then I remember that this is a free service with a general precedent set that we ban people who come around for the sole reason of starting sh*t. And it makes things easier. to be totally honest Anuj, you were the one in their private forums. Digi wasn't exactly attacking you in a public place, and from what I've heard from other SSH members you held a large part in instigating things to begin with. Some of who claimed the things you said of them as offensive and provoking. When I was told the quotes of what you said, I too would consider them offensive as well if I was in the same position. From what I was told this was some of what you said to them <Anuj> "Because I saw Obrien post and it suddenly made your gang worthwhile?" and then <Anuj> "I just thought that someone besides Emsixteen had made this place interesting" You might as well just have come out and say to them all that you consider them and the majority of the SSH members useless nobodies. Worst part about it you actually posted these things IN the SSH's own forum. Talk about a direct attempt at a slap to the SSH. To do that and then ban anyone (regardless that it ended up being digi and not someone else) for replying in what should be an expected response is a bit abusive. His reply was not even that bad. And that's even if it could be proven it was him since it was in their shoutbox from what I was told, which doesn't give the name of who posts in it. And just to show I'm representing both sides, here is what I was told was posted by someone (possibly digital) that led to digitalevil being banned. <SHOUTBOX> "Anuj: Anuj LOVES the Cock" Not sure how that could have been taken as impersonating a mod, since although it has your name in front of it, why would you refer to yourself in the third person and then try and insult yourself in a childish manner? If he had been banned for any other reason by any other mod I would say my brother might have deserved it, but considering it is a known fact you two have personal disagreements along with the circumstances in this situation makes me question the judgment of his banning. Anuj, you know I have no beef with you, out of most the mods here I think you usually do an above average job compared to most. Hell I'm extremely grateful to you because you even gave me the karma that shines below my name now. But I can't look at this situation and stand behind the decision to ban him. No, it is not because he is my brother. For anyone who knows the truth about us I never wanted him to join here in the first place. In fact I punched him in the head and bitched him out when I first found out he joined. But my thoughts on the matter are based on the evidence provided to me. And no, none of it is from him. I've yet to even talk to him about the matter. All I'm asking is that his ban is looked into and the right decision is made. I don't think anuj should be punished or anything silly of that sort, mistakes happen. But I would hope he might be smart enough to not let personal beefs interfere with forum moderating in the future, especially when things are going on outside of the public eye.
