topdogkiller
I've said my piece. And I read it....are you stoned or something? Until Sony gives me more games for my PS3, the best console evar is the SNES. hell yeah man. Super mario world, super metroid, a link the past, earthworm jim. I could go on.Damn we need to go back the good ol 16 bit times.
Crokey
Well the PC is the best machine for games, but if I have to pick a Static Spec Device, then that would have to be the SNES, it just had all the best games and the best playable games. Super Mario Kart (no other version comes close), Zelda III, Sim City, Street Fighter II Turbo, Super Mario World, even Starfox at the time was mind-blowing for a console. But I get the point in the first post, I'd be a little p*ssed at Rockstar if I was in Sony's shoes, for showing some high level of support for the GTA series only for them to get pooed upon by Microsoft when it comes to GTA:IV, but then again it's even worse for us PC gamers as we get sh*t up regardless
Sixdust
As mentioned, PCs got the games first, PS2 was an afterthought to make more money. Just like Rockstar does today, except in the wrong sequence. And this.. but not that many people had PC's at the time ..is just laughable. The only reason you have this illusion of GTA being completely unknown before the console-loving Rockstar took over is because you've had your head up your arse. No my friend. The only reason I have the illusion of GTA being a console game is because I don't study videogame history like some book worm like you do. You don't need to "study" video games to know their history. What if by some magical chance, he existed around this time and experienced things first hand? Calling someone a bookworm just points out that you are stupid and you are jealous of kids that are smarter than you.

I'm not jealous of nobody, I called him a book worm because I couldn't think of another word to say to respond to him. He just missed the point of what I was saying in the OP and tried to change the subject. Gareth gets the point. Just becuase I say Sony were the one's that gave GTA it's name instead of the PC it's my opinion. How that justifies if someone want to carry on reading all of what I wrote is stupid. SIP YEK NOD
which came first, the chicken or the egg? well, what happened here, did sony propel GTA to stardom, or did GTA propel the ps2? GTA 3 was a legendary game regardless, i doubt sony selling ps2s sold any copies of GTA 3, rockstar selling GTA 3 on the other hand.... as for sonys view of rockstar "There's no question that having the Grand Theft Auto franchise helped us a lot and helped us sell some units, but I don't think the battle would be any different with or without Grand Theft Auto. If you look at our first-party library and the franchises that we've brought to market over the course of PlayStation 2, we have a very formidable first-party library of exclusive software that will help define us." thats like standing on somebodies head, people exclaiming how tall you are, and you saying "it has nothing to do with the man i am standing on, its all me!" sainraja
Would it really be correct to say that the PS2 was only successful because of one franchise on it? It helped the system, certainly. But do you really think that one game franchise, ignoring everything else released on the PS2, has that much power? Devil May Cry gets no credit? Gran Turismo gets no credit? Silent Hill gets no credit? GTA was the only franchise that made the PS2 appealing? I think it's ridiculous to say that. I am not denying that it didn't help, it did. But the system had other franchises. I got a PS2 because of Resident Evil (lets not get into Capcom's deal with Nintendo, been screwed many times by them. Let me just say I own a Dreamcast because of them.) Grand Theft Auto isn't the only game that defines Playstation. There's God of War, there's Gran Turismo, there's Ratchet and Clank and a couple more. That's what defines Playstation. Many different titles, not just one. TheDude5000
I play games the way they were meant to be played. The TV is for weather forecasts and DVDs. No, no, the PC is for watching DVD's and weather forecasts. Can we get back on topic? Personally I prefer to play prev-gen titles on my emus, using my 360 controller(t's my only USB enabled controller). I've even made some videos with older games, all Zelda(though there are a few Goldeneye and BK vids I haven't uploaded yet. Btw, I made these before I had a wired 360 controller, meaning I had to play with my keyboard, hence it took me longer to beat the bosses because I was still getting used to playing with a keyboard. *catches breathe*. Here they are: Zelda: Link's Awakening Boss Battles Temple of Time CS King Dodongo Boss Battle BETA Rom Test Phantom Ganon Boss Battle Volvagia Boss Battle Edited July 21, 2007 by TheDude5000

The grand theft auto games were 3 of the 4 best selling games on the ps2. less than 10 sony first party titles grace the million seller list. The ps2 was built on the backs of the third party. to say the ps2 spawned great games is erroneous. it was, infact, these great games that built the ps2. to believe rockstar owes sony anything is ludacris. Why wouldn't he tout the first-party games? After all, he works for Sony. Do you expect him to say otherwise? He did not play down the importance of GTA at all. He said it was important but at the same time they brought in games from their first party which were also important in the success of PS2. He can't talk about third party the way he does about first party because it was the third party's decision to put it on the PS2. It wasn't Sony's decision. Sony can certainly influence them or make a contract but if Sony had.....GTA wouldn't have appeared on the Xbox at all. The first party titles will remain on the Playstation without any doubt. They can't say the same about third party and Grand Theft Auto is the best example of it. If GTA was what defined the Playstation and if that is what Rockstar wanted, they wouldn't be making one for 360 now would they? It's up to third party to decide if they want their game to define a platform. If Rockstar did, like I said before, they would have kept it on the Playstation. He was simply talking about games that define the Playstation and it was best for him to refer to first party titles because they will remain on the Playstation. If you think I am playing down third-party support I am not. Don't get me wrong. Third-party is what Sony has been known for. They have been building up their first party studios but they've always been about third-party. That's what made Playstation so great. Third party games did help, but I wasn't arguing against that point. I was just going against the part where you were putting so much importance ON JUST GTA. Not other third party franchises, but just GTA. That's just one third-party franchise out of many that appeared on the Playstation platforms. You have a good point obviously but you still miss my point a bit. It's definately not fair to say the GTA franchise made the PS2 what it is, obviously there were many other games (as you mentioned), but what I'm trying to say is that now it's the next generation, now is when we will notice how things change. Since GTA4 is moving on both new consoles from the get-go, it's really going to be a choice of buying a 360 as it will still be a lot cheaper than the PS3, a lot more cheaper. People aren't going to want a PS3 specifically for one game, and one that will also be on the 360. People who already have a PS3 will obviously buy the game to have an extra game on the machine that cost them an arm and a leg, but fresh next-gen'ers will go for the cheaper choice, and in this day and age people aren't into things like 'The Sony PS is the greatest!' It's the best console ever' and more likely to say 'both machines are (nearly) technically the same and one of those are nearly half the price?! I know what one I'm getting.' Starion
1. GTA got their name on Sony's console. It was Sony's consoles that were the main way of playing GTA games. Nope. The orginal GTA was made for the pc. And this next GTA is arguably the better game on the 360. becuase of this special content. I would kinda have to say the ps2 as one of the greatest though.. Just becuase of popularity. mod it with Nitrous Oxide and chassis dyno.

Jordan
N64 Goldeneye need i say more The Nintendo 64 was, on the whole, rather disappointing. Under 10 legendary games. Best ever would be the Super Nintendo. Legendary Games for N64...imo... Zelda: Ocarina of Time Goldeneye 007 Super Mario 64 That's about it. Perfect Dark was not legendary. It used many elements of Goldeneye 007, and then added some stuff. Playing as James Bond was undoubtedly better than Joanna Dark. "Legendary" is a strong word. For PS2, there was really only one legendary game, and it was Grand Theft Auto III. Vice City and San Andreas built on III, but they were not legendary by themselves. Also, Halo for Xbox was not legendary. A FPS with vehicles and multi-player = Halo. It's a bit new, but nothing special. The PlayStation One had Medal Gear Solid as its lone legendary title, mainly due to its storytelling. I know many people think the acting was bad, but the acting was seen by many others as great. For the PC, it was Half-Life. The original game is still regarded by myself to be one of the biggest and most influential games ever. A TON of people still play the original non-Source mods for the game...almost nine years later...

Gouveia
Dude, I can't stand the fanboyism anymore. Of course I was a Sony fanboy, but now, I don't judge a console best than other, I buy the one I want. GTA IV will be multi-plataform, but 360 will get exclusive episodes. SO? I'm sticking with the PS3. I don't need missions to make GTA better, I just need the pony farm! Man, please, stop being fanboys. If the company "wins the console war" what will you get? Tell me, what? "OMG I HUV TAH BEZT CONZOLZ HOXXORZ!" isn't a statement. Will your life change? Nope, you'll be on the same routine. Will you get more money? No, you'll have that "hardware-in-a-box" that'll lose it's valuew. Will the company salute you for being a fanboy? Nope, you'll be the same sh*tty consumer that bought the console and they'll never know you. Just keep that in mind.
