UnitedDestruction
Ok, long story short, I have a cable modem and an 8port switch. I plugged the cable modem into the "Out to hub" slot, my desktop into 8, and a laptop into 7. Only the desktop received a connection. Im pretty sure that that is most likely the wrong configuration, so if anyone could fill me in on the right one, and any extra info I need to get this working, it would be much appreciated. If I did have it right and its supposed to work then that is fine as well, the laptop has some Novell bullsh*t loaded on it so thats probably the problem in that case...(long story). It could possibly be IP trouble too though...if you have any knowhow on setting these switches up itd be much appreciated. Also, would hooking my computer and a PS3 to this work? Wouldnt I just treat the PS3 as if it were another computer? Sorry, Im not really familiar with switches, and Im not wanting to buy a router because I dont want to network. Here is a picture (sorry for the blurriness and sh*tty rushed photoshop job lol):
Primer43
From my understanding you would need a DHCP server, which would assign ip addresses to the hardware. Most routers have these built in. A first hand example: I have a Linksys router and I have a 24 port 3Com switch. If I had the connection going from the cable modem to the switch, then have the router plugged into the switch. It would not work. My current configuration: Cable modem -> Linksys Router -> 3Com switch. Everything works fine because the router assigns ip addresses to everything. So I would suggest getting a router, then route it the same way I did. Hope that helped.
UnitedDestruction
Well damn, that sucks, but youre probably right. If I buy a router with at least 2 LAN ports (like they make them with less lol) then I wouldnt even need the switch right? So far this is the setup I have in mind (Im having the buy a second cable modem...that will work right? 2 cable modems in one house?) this cable modem>this router (it looks decent, itd be fast enough for gaming right?)>PS3 and my PC That would work right? TheRoper
If you have 2 Ethernet ports on the desktop, you could go in one and out the other with a crossover cable straight to the laptop, then enable Internet Connection Sharing. Or even better, if they each have wireless, you could connect them to each other even w/out a wireless router. That's what I helped a friend set up and it worked great! Although the best would of course be a router. Edited July 17, 2007 by TheRoper $$$ MAKE MONEY WITH NEOBUX $$H
GTA3Freak-2001
Yeah I've got a similar setup but my Modem is a Router as well so I guess thats why it works and allows my 360, my other PC and this PC to all get internet access and or file sharing.
