Ever since I was young I always wanted to make a website. In fact I made a couple but never actually put them online.

I was planning on doing something the lines of a fansite for a TV show that I like, but there are usually a lot of very good fansites already operating!

So really what I want to ask is what are your websites (without breaking the advertising rule) and how did you make them succeed?

I say, keep your website simple. Keep your content in focus, at all time. A good example is Wikipedia. The pages goes straight to the point, other useful features, links, etc. are not cluttering up the website, but they are there, almost out of sight when you don't need them.

Ergo, go straight to the point, keep as few categories on your site as possible, you can always add more later on.

Also, I am curious, what TV show are we talking about?

Well there are a few, such as Father Ted, I'm Alan Partridge and Futurama.

You can get pretty decent resources on them already though. confused.gif

Do you personally have a website Svip? If so, do you have expenses e.g. for a .com website or incomes e.g. advertising? I presume if it's a fansite you wouldn't have advertising, would you?

Yes, Futurama has pretty decent resources, I run a wiki on the subject with a couple of guys.

Yes, I do have a personal website, but it does not have any advertisement of any kind. I am personally against ads as they just clutter up websites.

Okay. So I've come up with an idea for a fansite for a show. I am planning on having a complete rundown of every single character that has ever been on the show, which is a lot, and have a short bio, some quotes by them and a photo.

This will be a lot of work but I'm willing to give it a shot. I'm sure there will be no legal ramifications with having all those images from the show, will there?

A big problem I have is with the whole layout. I'm not too worried about the html because I can just learn that again, but the whole design of the site. I have photoshop, but rarely use it. Is there any good websites that gives some tips/tutorials on incorporating photoshop with websites i.e. making buttons etc. I have a good idea for what to do but its complicated and I don't want to tell everyone it!

I can't really see you getting in any legal trouble, you will afterall be a fan site promoting the show. As long as your site isn't offering episodes to download and things like that you shouldn't have any issues.

Have you considered what you are going to build your site up using? If it is going to be quite a big task you might want to consider using, or building a CMS to keep it easy to manage and maintain.

There are a near infinite number of tutorials out there to help you out.

I think http://www.tutorialized.com has quite a big database, but really it will just be a matter of searching around to see what you like.

If you're still unsure about any aspects it might not be that bad an idea to share what you have in mind, afterall once you're up and running it won't stay secret for long tounge.gif

I can see where your concerns are though.

Well the first idea was to have an old television set with the dials and buttons on the side and then use them as links. The other one would be an actual image from the show and have things in the image as links.... I'm not sure.

By the way, what is CMS?

Content Managment System. For some demos see http://www.opensourcecms.com

That sounds like an interesting idea, maybe you could use that idea to some extent but you should keep usability and ease of use in mind all the time.

Take those three fansites, they are all focused on totally different things but share a lot of fundamental design features.

I would go with your first idea, but don't have the whole thing centered inside a television. The content should be the main focus, a great design is nice but people will be on your site for your content, so make it as easy as possible to access. Personally i think you should go with the television idea for the header and a menu on left side of the page, but don't make it too cluttered and closed in.

Okay. Take a look at that Simpsons site for instance. How did the website designer do that whole page? I mean the header and menu on the left hand side. Are they frames?
