UnitedDestruction
So for starters, I think I got my PS2 around christmas of 2001, a year after its release. If not then I got it the year of release but Im pretty sure not. Last night I was playing a Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror demo Id got in the mail. It was pretty fun and I was about 10 minutes in probably when my PS2 just cut off, but the green "on" light was now flashing red, not standby. Im guessing this means hardware failure or something of the sort lol. I turned it off and felt it and it was pretty hot. Anyways I turned it back on and slipped out the game, then just turned it off again, I didnt want to test it. It made a weird sound too like there was plastic in the fan, but I know it wasnt, unless something came loose on the inside and was getting caught up in everything. It didnt get sucked into the back, I know that. Its been acting weird lately, trouble opening and closing the disc tray, plus I think the eye of the laser is moved up way too much but I havent felt like opening it up and trying to adjust it. Obviously Im out of the warrantly lol. A couple of months ago I went at it with some air duster, just sticking it in the vents and other places and it was pretty sad haha, dust everywhere. Not sure if Ive ever dropped it either. I remember a long time ago I had to send it into Sony to have it fixed for free, it had stopped reading DVDs or the games with the blue bottoms, and it was fine ever since. I think it was scratching up my games too, san andreas is acting horrible, and I ended up buying VC again, then lost it. Amazingly though GTA3 is still as good as its ever been. Anyways, its been a fun time with the PS2, and even though Im not 100% percent sure it is completely broken Ill probably never use it again so things dont get worse, and catch on fire or something, just get a PS3 pretty soon. This happened to anyone else? Just curious as to what actually happened, and what the hell the red blinking light means lol.
Monthma
My old one stopped reading FMVs and equal stuff , I think the laser broke down, but the PS two had been released, so I bought one. I bought my first PS2 in 2001 when Vice City was released, and it broke down after MGS3 was released.

darthYENIK
Hey man, that's a good life span for a PS2. I got my first PS2 about the same time, and it crapped out about 3 years ago.

Pat.
I got mine in 03, it died out around Oct. 06. I've got a slimline now, but I barelly ever use it.
Hayden Stasven
My current one I got second-hand in 2002 and it's working fine playing DVDs upstairs. The reason it's upstairs is because my friend's player stopped reading discs, just said disc read error every time. I've got another one in the closet under the tv, I don't think that's been used much but it works fine, was playing some old games on it about a month or so ago. Then there's the PS2 in the 'Dolphin Shack' which has had some extensive use, works fine. Oh and my bro's one in Sydney we got in late 2000 also works fine. So 1 out of 5 aint bad. Twang of Cauliflower
I got mine about the same time you did. Still works. Had a scare about a year back. I got disc read errors on more than half of my 40+ games. Just did some adjusting of the laser, and it was all good. Sorry to hear it, man. If you don't want to get a PS3, the slimlines are only 120$

The slimline is scratching up my games though. My AC 5 is trashed, so is San Andreas. SA just stopped working completely yesterday.

Yeah, I got a slimline after my first one died. It hasn't had one problem in three years. I even leave it on for hours, almost all day sometimes. I just leave it on with Guitar Hero II, and pick it up whenever I want to play.
Vinnie
I've got through 3 slimline PS2's, I have no idea why as I collect games consoles so it's not like i'm going to not keep it in good condition. Each one of them hardly got used anyway, so there's no excuse. My Sega MegaCD gets used more often & it's still okay. I guess some people are luckier with Ps2's than others. No seriously, I remember when I first got SA and PS2 during Winter '04 and after just a few hours the thing was pretty hot. And I remember sometime last year I accidentally left the thing on overnight after playing some Guitar Hero, I cringed at the thought. Goes to show you 360 ain't the only one with problems as some people try to make it seem. If a console is as good as PS2 or 360, I'd also re-buy it 3 times. Personally, I try to keep all consoles well ventilated and remove dust from them every now and them. Never even had a 360 break or overheat for that matter, you gotta keep your consoles out in the open and well ventilated, yet still away from possible enviromental hazards such as drinks. I think I might buy some cans of compressed air as well, just to make dust-removal easier. If there's anything I really have hardware issues with, it's controllers. And most of of the time due to me, lol. I smashed 2 Guitar Hero controllers, a Dual Shock 2, and at least 2 or 3 360 controllers, along with one XBox Controller S, and now my second, awesome Halo Edition Transparent Green Controller S kinda stopped working. And then I got the Y button on my backup XB controller jammed and all scratched up thanks to me trying to fix it by pulling it out with a screwdriver. Whew. Vinnie
I never rebought it, it was under warranty. Don't know why I bought it in the first place. I prefer the Dreamcast. Also I do keep them well ventilated, as I said I'm a collector of old equipment & I wouldn't put them in closed in areas. And I blow compressed air on them if needed. Brutuz
Apart form a small problem which i can fix, but I cbf, Mine still works, and its launch, the problem is the DVD tray keeps opening everytime I close it but I just have to put the DVD access Cable back in right, I hate working with the Ribbon Cables though.... AndyGanteks
mine has started to act weird rejecting memory cards saying No data and needing couple of times to reset the game to work.I still try to play it when my memo card gets readed well.I also have trouble with joystick playing ''himself''I dont know how to explain that but i have a feeling LCS and DA Vinci code were responsable for it...and many hits to teh ground as well. My advice:buy a 360 or a ps3 move on...

I know what you mean. Some missions on certain games (SA, MGS3) just piss me off to no end. That's when the plastic starts flying. Eventually, the analog stick is sort of defaulted slightly to the right. I got a nice new Logitech wireless controller now, so I try to restrain myself. Moth
Don't drop the controllers on the floor. I have done that to all of my controllers and there is something wrong with them all. like my blue when playing sa cj kept on jumping out of the car and killing himself. And for some werid reason my memory card can't save anymore even though it has a lot of memory left cause it is one of those mad cat memory cards. Oblivionz
My second PS2 just failed the other month. The light coming out was orange, like.. The green and the red light were both on, so I ended up just unhooking that PS2 and buying a new one.
Bigs
I got my first PS2 in 02 and it worked good until early 06. It was my fault for leaving it on all the time and dropping it and generally not taking very good care of it. Anyway, I got one of those slimmer ones shortly thereafter, and it's been working great. ToyMachine
I got my PS2 in 2001 when it came out as well. It just died lately. The games would start freezing during playing. I opened it up and it turned out the little part that spins wouldn't move the lens anymore. I just kept my Playstation 2 open and played with the spinning disk with the white magnet over it. It played fine for a month or two and now it totally crapped out. So what I did was I put it on ebay. It went for $34. Broken PS2s are apparently wanted. Sells yours. That's when the plastic starts flying. Well depends who's who. I never personally extracted my fury on a controller when lost in a game. I just accidently pushed him from the table when having lunch couple of times and similar stuff and then it started acting weirdly that every game i start the caracter walks in some way without me touching analog stick buttons. Very annoying.Had to buy a new joystick but it is still happening. And i might know why but i dont know how to fix it. But there's this small issue .I remember that once i played FIFA WC 2006 ,my ps2 and the game freezed while a player tackled mine one it is supposed to bring a high vibration but it freezed at that time so the vibration was freeed too and it coudnt stop...then i had to reset and it stopped.Seeing everything was fine with it and the memo cards i started playing Da Vinci code and LCS...and then.....must be broken from it,maybe it is the ps2 thaat actually si broken, but well i dont want to fix it since i'll be getting a ps3 sooner rather then later.... GTA3Freak-2001
Bought mine in 02 and it was technically working up until a few months ago when my brother's puppy thought it would be fun to chew the AV cable and then the next day get tangled in the controller cords and pull the whole system onto the tiled floor. I tried to revive her but sadly she didn't make it(not the dog the console lol). I wasn't that annoyed as it was really on its last legs, its had a good run as I have dropped it a few times and I've had to clean the DVD lens to get it reading discs so its done me fine. I would like to get one again though for games like God of War and also to re-play what PS2 games I've kept.
UnitedDestruction
Yeah one of the things I was worst about was leaving it on for too long. Especially those games that you can pick up and start playing out of nowhere, Id just play for a while and pause it, leave and come back later. That and playing at night and falling asleep or watching movies and falling asleep, waking up the next day and say well sh*t and turn it off lol. Ill probably be a lot more watchful whenever I get a new console, too bad you cant set a sleep timer on them
Uno Carb
The PlayStation 2's life cycle is pretty incredible. I bought mine several months after GTAIII came out. It still works, and I practically ran it into the ground with GodHand and Marvel v. Capcom 2, haha. The only problem I've had is it sometimes takes a little bit longer to read discs, and when I play God Of War II, it refuses to read the disc when the console is on its side [how I keep it as standard], so I have to set it horizontal for it to read. It doesn't say "disc unreadable", it just doesn't load up, haha. I think it would be a good idea to keep a PlayStation 2 model on the market for a long time to come as there are still plenty of games to play that don't feel dated. !moe!
My slimline broke three times before I just quit. To get it repaired, I went to Walmart, bought some tools and a PS2 at the same time, on the same receipt, then went home, switched out all of the insides, returned the PS2, and the workers there didn't even think anything was fishy at all. The last thing that I used on it was a porno vid my friend gave me... Good times. RIP PS2.
