If you mean MP4 or MPEG4 (AVI), then what type of video are you converting from? I usually use Media-Convert for small files (under 100 megs) it's online and easy to use. There is also a very popular "VirtualDUB Mod". each program are only about a 1MB each... They are invaluable tools which I use daily. They are freeware and opensource. Video codecs you will eventually want are XVID.
