Running GTAIII On Windows Vista

Recommended Posts

Due to some of the newer hardware & of course the new Microsoft Operating System, Windows Vista. You may have some problems on getting GTA III Running. You will find that you will need a slightly higher spec machine to run GTA III properly on Windows Vista.

Many problems are related to a low amount of RAM, or out of date drivers.

My Recommended Specification For GTA III On Windows Vista

1024Mb (1Gb) Memory [Has To Be A Large Amount Because Of Vista's Processes].

2.0GHz Pentium 4 or AMD Equivalent.

A Mid To High Range 256Mb Graphics Card With Up To Date Drivers (If You are using Aero).

A Mid To High Range 128Mb Graphics Card With Up To Date Drivers (If You are running Basic, or have disabled Aero).

Make Sure That Your Drivers Are Up To Date, And This Goes For Any Gaming In Vista.

The above specification may seem high for an old game, but because of Vista's processes, you'll find that you will need around the specification listed above.

You may find better performance if you download the 1.1 Patch. You can also copy the audio to your hard drive this way.

There have been numerous users saying that GTA III will not run on Vista out of the box. This is because you'll need to put the game into Windows XP or Windows 98 Compatibility mode for it to run properly.

To do this:

Right Click The GTA III Shortcut > Properties > Compatibility > Check Run This In Compatibility Mode For: > Windows XP Or Windows 98 (Whatever Works Best).

Remember, Because Vista drivers are being developed all the time it's important that you Keep Your Drivers & Software Up To Date At All Times.

Dual/Multi-Core Systems

GTA III may not work on these CPUs. Remember before you run GTA III to allow it use only one core.

That's strange. I have a dual core CPU and Vista, and it played fine for me. Didn't even bother with compatibility mode.

Maybe I just got lucky. Thanks for the topic though, it should be a great help to those who are having problems.

Ok, i had this, doing this fixed it.

Uninstall GTA 3

Delete the GTA 3 Folder (C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\GTAIII)

Delete the gta3.set file (located in My Documents\GTA 3 User Files)

Install the game

Run the game, see if you get the converting textures message, and see if they are there.

1024Mb of Ram is not enough to play any GTA game on Vista, even though it is enough to run it, it lags too much to be able to play the game.-I know, because I have a Vista PC with 1024MB of RAM and all up to date drivers, and it will Run the game, but it lags too much to play it.-Even with disabling anti-virus/firewall and ending all non-essential programs.

So in conclusion, I would recommend you have at least 2GB of ram, plus a 2.0GB processor or higher, and 128mb video card all with the latest drivers.

Another problem might be the fact that Vista has DX10, and GTA 3/VC uses DX 9. Hope this helps.

I have 1GB RAM, And 2.75GHZ Processor, but the processor isn't that good. And I have a Nvidia Geforce 8500 GT, 256MB, And GTA3 Runs extreme smooth, even over 1024 x 768 x 32.

And so does VC, SA.

@radioman: In your topics, I saw you had 1.5Ghz processor (which should be fine, I had 1.6Ghz, and it still ran amazing, then I upgraded). And I have the same amount as RAM. It must be your graphic card. Intergrated graphics.

Go to start>All Programs>Accessories>Run.

Type Dxdiag

Now when it brings that up, click on display tab. Look for where it says name. Please tell us it.

@gtamodder, True, I do have 1.5ghz processor and 1024MB ram, but it still lags extremely bad. Also, what's the difference between "Integrated" graphics card and the other graphics card types?

Also, I just checked Dxdiag, and the name says: VIA Chrome 9 HCIGP WDDM

Memory for graphics card is 178MB. Hope this helps.

I done a search, it is Intergrated. They are very weak, and not powerful (and on-board graphics, which aren't made for gaming)

The only way to stop the lagging, is to get a better graphic. I suggest a Nvidia Geforce, (Something like a 7600 GT, Or 8500 GT)

I'm not to sure about the differences.

Edit: It said games will run horrible, on Windows Vista with them graphics. The only way to fix it, As I said, buy a good GPU (Something like a Nvidia Geforce 7600 GT)

Thank you for the help gtamodder, I didn't know what the difference was, because my XP system has the same type of graphics card, and all 3 GTA games play good on it, so Microsoft probably made a few changes to them on Vista. I was thinking about getting a new grahics card any way, because the games do not look as good on it(vista) as they do on XP.

Yeah grab yourself a graphics card, the Via Chrome9 IGP (integrated graphics processor) on Vista or XP is very weak. It's made for browsing the web and well thats about it. It does aero but very choppy and slowly.

As for which card either the Nvidia 8500 or one of the new ATi one's, they are supposed to be pretty good value.

On Vista, the save files are in the Documents folder under GTA 3 User Files Folder, if you use Vista or XP compatibilty mode, and the Public Documents folder if you use 98 compatibilty mode. It is unusual to not be able to save on PC, unless your harddrive is corrupt-just like on the the PS2, your memory card can be corrupt. Hope this helps.
