Mark
If MS are vaguely decent, they'll keep replacing consoles even when they are long out of warranty. It's common practice for a lot of companies to do this..actually one that springs to mind and seems quite fanboyish, is Sony. They have an extensive list of camcorders they repair for free regardless of warranty if it appears to have a dodgy CCD as a batch of CCDs were made that were faulty. Includes cameras that are over 5 years old now. Way out of warranty.
Platinum.
Got a new one yesterday, seems to be working fine, hopefully won't get the RoD with this one.
Carbine23
Theres a problem with my 360. When i try to open up the disc tray it doesnt open so i have to push down on it and than it opens..... Is it still under warranty? I don't know....oh nice sig and member title by the way (that was from band of brothers) haha thanks. Yeah, George Luz from Band Of Brothers. Also, where did you buy the 360 from? I got it from EB Games.....I don't have the receipt.....one time it stopped reading my call of duty 2 disc so i went to EB and they gave me a new one...they said the following 1. Sometimes the 360's can stop reading discs and that only happens to bad units 2. Don't put your 360 on carpet and 3. Don't put your 360 down flat like a ps2 (they claim it scratches the disc better). The standing up is the best way
Glycerine
One of the easiest (and riskiest) ways to fix a 360 (without voiding the warranty) with a ring of death is to run it in a towel for a short period of time (until the circut boards heat up) the goal being to fix the cold solder which is a common cause for it to get the ring. My friend saw some video were another guy did that. Few weeks later he got the RROD. He tried the towel thing but it didn't work for him.
Uno Carb
The air vents in the 360 truly don't make any f*cking sense. They're everywhere and it definitely increases the risk of dust getting inside of it. Apparently Microsoft want you to buy a seperate stand for your 360 for "maximum performace". The standing up is the best way Number 3 should be the other way around, there is a higher chance of the disc getting scratched standing upright my PS2 did it and so did my 360 so its horizontal and its never had a problem apart from the DVD Drive needing replacing. nikolajz1
Exactly 1 year with my 360 and no problems with the 360 itself. The only problem I had was with the Nyko Intercooler I had. It ran fine for two months then one day out of nowhere I got the RRoD. I was pretty livid when that happened but I remember reading about problems with the Intercooler so I took it off and no more RRoD. I opened up the Intercooler and noticed problems with the wiring. tony da boss
I kept my 360 in the middle of the floor, plenty of ventilation, and I got the red ring yesterday. I'm not sure if I have the recite for it, but do you need since there's a 3 year warranty and no one's had it longer than 3 years? And about how long does it take to get back after you send it to them?
papanesta
I've had my 360 since launch date, no problems. *touches wood* I swear, if it dies just as I get GTAIV... I'll steal my brothers. EDIT: Microsoft has had my boss' 360 for over 100 days now... they keep f*cking him about.

Nah you shouldn't need the reciept especially as you say no-one has had a 360 for more then 3 years, I didn't need it when the 360 hadn't even been out 12 months in Australia so obviously within warranty. @paps - Ha I am waiting for that happen to me, pop in GTA4 and bam the thing dies! gta_player5
I would like to get an Xbox 360 and have been contemplating whether or not get this or save up a bit and buy a Playstation 3. I was leaning very far towards getting an Xbox 360, however, after reading through this topic a bit, it has caused some concern and some reconsideration on whether or not to buy a 360. Is there a certain thing that causes this problem? Mistreatment of the console? Lack of ventilation? I ask because with my consoles I'm quite meticulous. I have my console in a shelf that is open, so there is no lack of ventilation, and I don't get up and start beating my consoles. So do we know what exactly causes these "red lights of doom"? Im not sure myself....It's possibly from overheating but the Red Ring of Death happens to the early consoles and Microsoft added a new chip or something into the 360's to stop it, so i think your safe now.. Chadg
Well, I don't have it yet probably because i just got it about 2 weeks ago. I also got the nyko intercooler, and I have been playing for a couple of hours at a time and it didn't freeze. The only time it froze is when I was playing Gears Of War online. tagamaynila
Got mine december last year and since then have gotten the red rings three times. On all occasions, i needed only to restart the console and the problem was gone. I place my 360 on the floor with nothing around it so it remains well ventilated. Carbine23
Its like the second i put in GTA4 i get the red ring of death.....that would be the worst day in the history of my life
DexX
i am NOT proud to join this semi-exclusive group of people. My 360 just got the red rings today I'd really like to know what causes this, because i got the system just a few months ago in April, and i play it about once a week, maybe less, so it's not from overuse. TheDude5000
Well that's a shame. Has never happened to me, but then again I've always kept the console well ventilated, which is what I think you should have done, Dexx. Overheating causes this. You could play your 360 for days at a time if you wanted, if it were well ventilated. But a few hours in a closed up space and it'll overheat and you'll get those RROD. It's just such a shame some of the best consoles have such epidemics(PS2 and DRE, SEGA CD and the LKE).
DexX
ventilation isn't really a problem, although given the size of the 360, i only have so many ways and places to store it. it dwarfs every other console i have near it. Does it make it any difference if i orientate it vertically or horizontally ?
Carbine23
Today August 5th, 2007 at around 7:30 or somewhere around that time... DexX
Now this is just silly. I called microsoft to find out what to do with my system. part of the trouble shooting process, involves disconnecting my system, and re-connecting it. that conversation went something like this... MS: ok, let's disconnect the system, and re-connect it, and see if that works. Me, thinking to myself: "well numbnuts, it was already disconnected so i could find the serial number, but ok, i'm game..." *reconnects system, and powers it on. the system works to my astonishment and disbelief* ME: "er....it..um...works...." <8 seconds awkward silence> MS:yea it was probably a loose cable or something... ME:It's been hooked up, in the same position for the last 4 months. 10 minutes ago, it didn't work. This doesn't make any sense. MS: well did you want to fill out a repair order, or wait to see if it happens again? ME: I think i'll wait... So yea, that's weird. nothing changed, apparently i have a tempermental pos. i'm happy it works at the moment, i'm not happy about how unreliable it is. naturally it waits until i'm on the phone to work, so i look like a tool

Carbine23
Im getting my new one (with the fixed chip) in a few weeks.... This new chip protects the 360 from hardware failure...I'm not 100% sure if this protects this fully from the Red Ring of Death but it lasts longer than the other consoles...
