leik oh em jeez!
Excuse me? 2 Opterons? PC's can have 2 physical CPU's? When did this happen, or have I read your post wrong? Yep, PCs can have two CPUs. It's been there since the Pentium III days, maybe even before that . And yep, that board supports SLI. Yep, I actually have a dual Pentium III Server I built a few months ago. Wait, server motherboards support SLI now? I know that's what your planning on doing, are you sure it's gonna work? That all depends on the expansion slots and chipset. Planning two XFX 8800GT's in the top two slots, and maybe eventually two ATI FireGL V5600's in the bottom two slots. Yes, That's SLI and CrossFire, in one system. But until I can save up for two V5600's, I'll probably get a cheap All-in-Wonder X1900 for one of the bottom slots. When I get the FireGL cards, I'll put the X1900 in a secondary media PC. Edit: Pics of the Server, clicky for full views. Edited August 19, 2009 by leik oh em jeez! dog_day_sunrise
I haz a new PSU on order, and am going to see how much of my old rig I can salvage. It's a PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750w Quad-PCI-E PSU, actually rated at 825w, and looks to me about the best sub-£100 PSU for multi-GPU power. Will it take a pair of 8800GTX? Yep. Will it take a pair of GTX275's? Only time will tell...

Can anyone recomend a mid range card for a quadcore phenom 2 3.0GHz and two gigs of DDR3 RAM (Plan on upgrade to 4 gigs when I purchase the video Card). anus
What's your budget? You're also going to need a good PSU to power up the system with the video card. Unless you already have a powerful enough one.

I know the PW is a bit weak, which is why I'm looking for a mid range card. Once I have enough funds, I'll upgrade the Video Card along with the PW. anus
Well you can get a HD4870 1GB and a good PSU for $174.98. Which would be your best option. But if not upgrading the PSU, the GTS250 1GB would be your best bet.

But if not upgrading the PSU, the GTS250 1GB would be your best bet. Thanks man! I'll for sure check out that the 250. Is there a significant increase in performance between DDR3 and GDDR5? I noticed that the Geforce 200 series are relatively more expensive than Radeon's HD series. I know that the Radeon HD's consume more power, but that wouldn't merit a higher price, should it? I'm gonna take a hunch and say that GDDR5 memory is relatively new equating a higher price for the cards. Don't Macs use GDDR5 memory?
anus
Remember man, it isn't just the memory. The HD4870 is all round more powerful than the GTS250. As for the prices, well nVidia cards are usually quite a bit more expensive than the ATI equivalent, that's why people consider ATI "more value for money". But then again, the nVidia equivalent of an ATI card is faster than the ATI in most cases. For example, a GTX260 216 is faster than a HD4870. And the GTS250 is basically a slightly faster, rebranded 9800GTX+ which is why it's cheaper than the 4870. And some Macs do have video cards which use HD4870s which in turn use GDDR5 . To be honest, I recommend you save up a bit more and go for the PSU and video card in one go. You'll end up spending less this way than if you upgrade later on when you get more cash. The combo I linked to is only $24.98 above your budget and the performance increase over the GTS250 is, IMO, worth every cent.

Cursed
The e5300 is quite a good processor, especially when combined with the right motherboard. The PC I built for my brother has a e5200, ASUS P5KPL-AM motherboard, a 1GB 9600GT and 2GB of 800MHz DDR2, and even with the stock cooler I have had his processor at 3.4GHz. kingvercetti
It came with the 5GB ram. How very odd. I can't remember if I've posted in this thread before, but here's the machine I've been rocking since September '08. Core 2 Quad Q6600 OCed to 3GHz 4GB DDR2-800 RAM Sapphire HD4870 (512MB version) MSI Neo2-Fr P35 Mobo 2x Samsung 7200 RPM 320GB HDDs Tagan 600W PSU X-Clio Windtunnel case Crappy Optiarc DVD drive that has the responsiveness of a sloth on morphine Windows 7 Ultimate x64 It still maxes out damn near everything at at least 60fps (I play single player games V-sync'd anyway), so I won't be upgrading my GPU for a while, but I am planning on buying a Kingston 64GB SDD next month, it only hits about half the speed of top SSDs but it's only half the price. I'll be using that as my Windows drive, saying as this installation of 7 wasn't a clean install and it's still murky from two years of Vista. Oh, and I might pick up a new mouse and keyboard soon, I'm using stock Dell ones and the keyboard is alright, but the mouse is awful, I have a lot of trouble moving it just one pixel in Photoshop and the like. I Had To Get The Parts Little At A Time Because I Am Also Restoring A 1983 Dodge D-150 Power Ram And My Job Only Pays So Much. However The Most Time Consuming Part Was The Wiring Through Out The Case, Because My Case Has Nothing For Wire Management. After About A Day Of Work, All Of The Wires Are Well Hidden And It Looks Professional Inside The Case. I Don't Know The Model Name Of The Case, As My Dad Bought It At A Computer Show And We Build My First PC Together When I Was 7. It Was A Beast Athlon XP 2000+, 1Gb Ram, Geforce 5200 FX 128MB. Ahh...
