poopskin
Yeah, probably. After all, free game... Later on in the year i'll get a second video card so i can go dual-monitor...Or i could format my old computer and turn it into a home server with some RAID arrays and a UPS. After all, it's specs are right where Windows Home server'd run perfectly. i'd feel bad throwing away a perfectly good computer (well, everything but the XP installation, anyway)... anus
That's good to hear because a PC as powerful as that deserves a good display .

poopskin
no, i don't. this is my first time with a non-prebuilt PC. Frack, i don't have enough money for any OS other then XP home (and i need XP x64 to recognize that extra gig of RAM) from what i can tell. dagnabbit, at least prebuilt PCs already had the OS on them... anus
Well, with Vista Home Premiuim x64 the total rises to $1,018.89. Think you can cough up the extra cash?
poopskin
no, my mom said only $1000 (she's paying with her tax refund). ...Wait, i could afford Home Premium x64 if i don't get the monitor. oh well, the monitor i have is 1680x1050 or something like that, which is big enough for most games. anus
Okay, we're going to have to make some changes then. Get rid of the CPU cooler and use the stock cooler for now. See my previous post for the updated stuff.
poopskin
i need to shave off 8 dollars to afford vista home premium. Will my computer melt if i use the stock cooler whilst playing oblivion on max settings? edit: i can also reuse my old mouse and keyboard, as long as it has ps/2 ports. Fozzy Fozborne
@Poop, if you get a second graphics card and run it in SLI, you can NOT have a second monitor on it. That's one of the strange thing about SLI is that you can only run one monitor at a time with it enabled. However, you can run two monitors off of a single 260GTX no problem. Also, you want to play games for the next 10 years on a system? Not going to happen. Look how far we've come since even the millennium. Back in 200, 128MB of ram and an 800MHz Pentium 3 were average computers. Now dual cores are pretty much standard and quads can be had for a few bucks more along with what? 64 times the RAM (8GB in modern computer, 128 in older). Also look at hard drives, from 10-20, maybe 40 in 2000 to a terabyte being available for less than a hundred bucks. Don't even get me started on graphics cards. Computers just evolve too quickly to expect even the most cutting-edge computer now to be able to play most games 5 years from now, never mind 10. By the time 8GB is needed for games, the rest of your computer will be requiring a total rebuild... probably with some sort of deca-core I-17 from Intel or something similar. anus
LOL. No no, the stock cooler is fine for running at stock speeds and even some moderate overclocking. Your PC won't melt or be damaged in any way . You'll be able to overclock to about 3GHz without any heat issues. See my updated post .
poopskin
i'm not gonna overclock, i screwed up my windows installation with a partition manager. imagine what i would do with a trick that could permanantly damage the computer.
anus
Well you won't have any problems using the stock cooler then. And yes, you can reuse your keyboard and mouse. But overclocking is safe if you read up on it and do your research and is an awesome way to get more free performance.
poopskin
I told my mom about the whole "Build it yourself, no other companies involved", and she said she'd prefer it if i got a computer from somewhere i could return it if i broke it, but i could go ahead with it. Sigh, i wish PCs didn't have to be upgraded so often. Oh well, maybe in the future it'll be possible to rule the world and forcibly slow the flow of technology. Darn thing moves waaaaay too fast, and being 14 i don't have the money to blow 1000$ on a new gaming rig every few years...And you can only upgrade 1 computer so much... EDIT: I could update to This hard drive with the monitor! Twice the space for only 20$ more! After all, i need all the hard drive space i can get. anus
I thought you'd find 250GB to be enough . Anyway, yeah that's a good drive. Totals to $1003.90 though with the monitor. $3 above budget . Oh and even though you build it yourself, you're still able to RMA dead parts as long as the part's under warranty. So no worries there. poopskin
Nah, my last computer had a 200gb hard drive and i got dangerously close to filling it. (Trust me, freeware stuff, .VHDs and backups of my installation disks ((no, i don't distribute them. it's always a good idea to keep backups, though.)) take up tons of space, especially since i rarely deleted anything.) How many hard drive slots were there in that case? maybe i'll get a few terrabyte drives later on to accompany the 250/500gb. ... Well, the 250's my only option. suppose i'll get a ext. (int. maybe?) floppy instead of the larger HD, which is 3$ over budget. i'll just put in a TB drive later, i suppose. Always buy internal as external ones aren't as fast as the internal ones, you don't want to bottleneck a good system like that .
