Waste
They always have been as good as any other HDD brand. I have two Maxtor HDDs that have been in my PC for over 5 years now.
Picolini
Nope, that was a long time ago. They got bought out by Seagate and now they are just as good as any other HDD brand. Hmmm, didn't know that. Seagate, as sad as it is to say (since I just bought a 500GB and 1TB drive from them) have been failing after about three months due to bad firmware. I hope for the love of god that doesn't happen to mine. My 500GB has lasted longer than 3 months, but I won't feel too safe for another month or two. My 1TB is only about a month old now, so I've got some time before it's clear if it'll go or not. I've got most of my media (499GBs, actually) on it... I hope to god it holds up alright. And if i'm not getting very much for my 1000$ budget (thanks, tax returns!), where can i get a better value? anus
Good god man. Both those laptops are crap for gaming. That onboard video won't run Fallout 3 very well at all. For $1000 you can get a PC that destroys both those laptops, way more bang for your buck too. If you're interested, let me know. I can put together a build for you. If you can't build the PC yourself, get the parts delivered to you and get it built at a local store for a small fee.
poopskin
Well, i'd just like a computer i can take with me most places (i looked at portables...Slightly smaller then desktops but more powerful then laptops. the cheapest one was 2000$ ). There was a option for better onboard video, but i kept it at the least expensive one. i 'spose i could downgrade to the 250gb external HD and improve the video... ...Or i could just not play fallout 3. besides, i already have oblivion-PC and i could just as easily get it on the '360. EDIT: My other options are... 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530, which is 150$ more expensive. i can get this one if i get rid of any external HD and the cooling mat, but i'd rather not do that. 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650, which is 300$ more expensive. to get this one, i'd have to downgrade a ton of stuff, including RAM and HD size. i'd probably have to get rid of the carrying case, too. ;( THINGS IN THE LAPTOP I NEED: -A big HD (Internal+External together is slightly over 1tb, requirement met) -more then 512mb of RAM (requirement met) -The ability to do most things i could throw at it (internet, word processing, occasional games. requirements mostly met. After all, it'd probably whip Oblivion into shape.) THINGS I WANT FOR THE LAPTOP -A docking station (i'll have to get this later) -a cooling pad (met) -A carrying case (met) Edited March 21, 2009 by poopskin
anus
You could go for this laptop which is $1099 and has good features. Or if you could stretch your budget a little more, go for this laptop which has a better video card for $1349.99.
poopskin
my budget is 1000$. Well, the only game i care wether or not it runs is TESIV: Oblivion. Edited March 21, 2009 by poopskin

poopskin
Of course, then if i get that i wouldn't have any money left over for a external hard drive or a carrying case. Not to mention i was hoping i could stick to HP like i've been doing for the last 8 or so years. oh well, i suppose i could give it a try even though i've pretty much given up on the whole gaming thing. After all, what's the point of buying a gaming rig even though it won't be good enough to run a game that comes out 1 year after you bought it? oh well, screw PC gaming. it's too much trouble to run the newest games on a computer. anus
Dude, if you spend that $1000 you have on a good gaming PC, you'd be able to run games for way more than one year. With current hardware, you'll even be able to go as far as five years or more. That's why I recommended a desktop. Desktops aren't what they used to be. Since hardware is way ahead of software, you don't need to upgrade as often as you had to in the old days.
poopskin
thing is, i'd love to have a computer i can take with me. i only recently discovered how nice owning (well, borrowing from my mom: as you well know i clobbered my last computer with a partition editor) a laptop is, and thing is i like how desktops are more powerful then laptops but it's hard to watch youtube videos whilst laying in bed (my favorite late-nite weekend pasttime, sure i have a TV but there's rarely anything good on) with a desktop. as i said, i was hoping i could afford a Portable computer, something that offers the portability and power of a desktop whilst still being vaguely portable, but they're all miles out of my price range. EDIT: How does this look as far as specs? i can get a 1tb Ext. HD with it, and i'll just reuse my dead computer's monitor on it. Hopefully it has a VGA port... Gouveia
If you're looking for a good laptop, just make sure it has a graphics card that isn't from Intel, because they suck ass. I've got myself a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ450AN, it's old, but it's still good. It's got both a Intel GMA 900 (I think) and a Geforce Go 7400. I've upgraded it to 2GB ram and it runs games like Crysis and Far Cry 2 pretty well, but on lower settings and resolutions. I don't know the relation of price with the laptops's parts in the USA, but I can recommend you to get something with a Geforce 8400M (or even a Series 9M), 2GB + DDR2 RAM and some good processor. I have a T5600 here. It's old, but it gets the job done most of the time. I think that you can find a laptop with those specs for less that US$1,000.00 but I could be wrong. EDIT: Those specs are pretty good
anus
So you've decided to go with a desktop eh? Nice. Anyway, that PC isn't worth it. You can get a far more powerful PC if you build it yourself. Just get a shop to put it together for ya for a small sum. It's worth every cent as you'll get the most bang for your buck. If interested, let me know and I'll put together a build for ya. leik oh em jeez!
Laptops are not for gaming. And unless you use a controller for all your games, you'll need a separte mouse and keyboard. If you use it for gaming, you'll end up using it like a desktop. Laptop is NOT to PC as PSP is to PS2.

anus
Thanks elanman . For poopskin, I put together a build well within your budget: Case: Sunbeam Silent Storm Power supply: Antec EAH650 650W Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3LR CPU: Intel Q6600 RAM: G.SKILL 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 8800 Video card: Sparkle GTX260+ 216 (you get a copy of COD: WaW with the card) If reusing old monitor, buy this Gigabyte GTX285 instead. HDD: Seagate Barracuda 500GB SATAII ODD: LG Burner Monitor: Asus 22" Widescreen LCD OS: Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64 bit Totals to $993.91 if reusing old monitor, and $1,003.90 if buying the monitor. anus
Of course, but the thing is, 4GB is more than enough. There are no games out which uses more than 4GB. Don't waste your money for little if not no performance gain.
poopskin
But you just wait until crysis 2010 or The elder scrolls 5 needs 5gb of RAM to run...see, i want this computer to be able to run anything the next 10 years has to offer. Also, like the case. it isn't unneccisarily colorful!
anus
Well, if you must go with 8GB buy two kits of the RAM I linked to. But really, even future games won't need that much RAM. Oh and the case is an extremely good deal. Great cooling and looks for the price.
poopskin
Eh, maybe i'll just upgrade later on in the year (or whenever the 6gb barrier is crossed). i suppose i'll just go with the 4gb for now. i don't care, as long as it'll get me a decent framerate. (i probably just wanted more RAM due to me trying to get as far away from 512mb as possible). Now then, 1tb ext. HD, or warranty...?
anus
Hehe. Don't worry man, 4GB is more than enough for gaming. Even for IV which is the biggest memory hog I've ever seen. Oh and you'll be able to run any game out maxed out with that rig. So you're gonna REALLY notice a huge difference from switching over from your current PC to the new one. So you buying the monitor too?
