Ultimate Lag

Well, I bought Vice City yesterday and it is unbelivably laggy, as soon as you start the game it runs at about 1 frame every 20 seconds. I have Uninstalled/Reinstalled 3 times, i have deleted the .SET file and i have tried running it with the Frame Limiter on and off. I have run it with the bare minium background tasks but even that doesn't work.

The computer is a HP Compaq Presario C500 (Laptop)

OS: Windows Vista Home Premium

Processor: Intel Celeron M CPU 430 @1.73 GHz 1.73 Ghz

Memory (RAM): 1014 MB

System Type: 32-bit Operating System

Graphics: Mobile Intel 945GM/GU Express Chipset Family

The laptop itself is only 2 weeks old. Any help would be appricated.

Have you updated all the drivers for each and every hardware component on the motherboard? I hope you know what I am talking about.

Intel 945GM needs to run Vice City on lowest draw distance and 640x480 resolution for a smooth, constant fps rate. Download FRAPS and tell us what fps you're getting (note that you don't need to give us the actual benchmark file or start one up during gameplay; just tell us or else FRAPS will just lag up your game!)

What have other Vista users done to run VC?

How much VRAM?

That doesn't really mean anything. There's a difference between a Sager flagship and a Dell budget laptop for example.

@ROF: He doesn't need to download Fraps. He just told us it's 1 frame every 20 seconds. That's probably an exaggeration, but you get the point.

All the components are up to date.

The VRAM is 224 MB, which is enough to play VC.

Looking through it appears Vista is compatible with VC.

All the menus and cutscenes work and when I start a new game it loads up instantly.

However, the resolution doesn't get changed to the extreme lowest. So lower than the res and the draw distance in Display Setup for me please.

1 frame every 20 seconds.

As for that statement - I need to know how exactly well your computer can handle Vice City, really. Sounds like how a 286 processor would perform if you weren't joking.

Its the only game i expeirence the lag in. I have played some other more demanding games and they work just fine.

In Vice City, you get Ultimate Lag on a Radeon Xpress by:

- Blowing up cars.

- Doing "The Job" mission with the smoke effects.

- Going inside the Pole Position Club or The Malibu with the lighting effects.

You ever tried the above on your Intel GMA 945? tounge.gif

Your problem is so hard to believe that this is why I want you to benchmark the game via FRAPS. Remember you had updated your drivers, deleted [.set] file, and freshly uninstall/reinstalled the unmodded + legit game. What could be your problem? Anyway, foggy or rainy weather also contributes to this lag.

Doesn't matter. Still try and lower down the settings. Some game's have totally different engines. I am sure this thread would be interesting if you had mentioned that lag was taking place on a Core 2 Quad w/ GeForce 8800GTX SLI.

OK, I am not actually gonna ask you if you downloaded the drivers, but can you tell me which drivers you downloaded for all the motherboard components as well as the driver dates? Just testing to see how good you are with computers. sly.gif

How'd you know that? And looking through where?

Did you try compatible mode for Windows 98? Note that if 98 doesn't help, then try Windows XP SP2 compatibility instead.

Looking at other peoples posts i meant. Anyway i tried the game on my PC which is quite old: 1250 MHz AMD Processor, 256 MB RAM, ATi Raedon 7000, XP Sp2 and it worked perfectly. Therefore I will just use that to play it on. Thanks fo your help, I really appricate that you took the time to help me.
