GTA IV for PC

I’ve been lurking on this site since its inception. I can’t believe I’m posting (call me a snob… go ahead call me a snob). I can only read a few posts before I’m sickened by the grammar and spelling. The lack of diction and logic on this site is more than a little disheartening. (I’m a university prof. and I see too much of this decline in my own students).

 

However, this thread is certainly better than most thanks to my fellow old-timers (I’m also 37). Hey, even us old guys need our fill of digital mayhem. Anyway, I’ve been playing games since PET computers. I was a huge fan of the very first computer mod, Castle Smurfenstein on the Apple IIC, and I’ve always been a fan of GTA (back to its 2D days). I’ve never owned a consol, and frankly have no interest in owning one. I can’t imagine playing a FPS on a gamepad (they’re for driving… why the hell would you use them for anything else?) and I can’t fathom how having a game aim for you could be considered fulfilling or fun (or even moderately entertaining).

 

I’m really looking forward to GTA4; so much so that I have even considered buying a consol (I’ll save you the trouble and spit on myself). I’ve always hated waiting for the PC version of GTA. What I dislike more though, is the wasted potential. I don’t need 100 fps…. give me 40fps and some better models and effects! In a perfect world, GTA4 would be designed for the PC and then watered down for the consols…. It won’t happen of course, but we can dream.

You hit the nail on the head. This makes the PC version look like a port and I'm with you on reversing this.

 

Like you, I've considered playing it on a console. That would mean buying a system for one game, which doesn't make economical sense. On top of that, I'd probably end up unsatisfied (for a multitude of reasons). I'd buy the PC version when IT came out, which is exactly what they want. So, I'm not going to do that. I will wait and turn off my GTA antennae.

Like you, I've considered playing it on a console. That would mean buying a system for one game, which doesn't make economical sense. I want to say to you and all the other PC gamers who're thinking about buying a console for GTA IV: "Don't do it!" I've done it for you with GTA SA . I bought a PS2, not only, but also because of GTA SA, since I wouldn't wait. I also played Mortal Combat and GT4 on it. And for this games it was fun, especially to play with (or more against ) friends. But to play GTA SA with the console was terrible! Due to this experience, I wouldn't play GTA IV on a console, not even if I would get it all for free. I'm more than confident that GTA IV will be released for PC and I won't ruin my first game experience with it.

Jowpers, the ferocity of your attitude towards consoles along with several other posters here is telling, it just sounds bitter - your not getting a PC GTA first, because it makes no sense to - PC gamers are in the minority, and so will be dealt with like a minority.

 

Is this fair ?, actually yes, it means the majority are catered for first, and have no further delays to a game that we would surely have if having to port from a PC and dealing with a 'watered down' version.

 

The PC version, will have its advantages, sure, but this is no excuse to bash console users. Many people older than the 18-24 demographic have consoles and dont need pontification from 'superior' PC gamers. Discussing your gripes is of course your right, just a little respect is all i ask, even if you dont get it from the kiddies on the site - you should be mature enough to lead by example. Everything has its pros and cons..

Minorety?

I really don't see it, this fight between XBOX and PS may have put the PC in the shadow, but definitly not a minority. The sales number here in Norway the consoles have about 80% og the market. Console fanboys use those numbers to say PC gaming is dead, but a closer look at the number reveals that the PC leads over both 360 and PS3 individualy, and that does not include online sales(and those numbers are huge and increasing), and the numbers are very similar in US and other places. Then there are pirates, I don't support it but they do add to the numbers considerably.

That would really make a drop in console sales

There are reasons for a person who bought the console version to buy a PC version later, I don't see any reasons in the opposite direction.

There was a time when the title "Professor" would have me in panics and fretting about what excuses I could come up with to get an extension to a deadline . Ah golden days they were too but glad to see you posted, I too was a lurker for quite a while, till I could stand the console kiddie rubbish no more

 

 

I want to say to you and all the other PC gamers who're thinking about buying a console for GTA IV: "Don't do it!" I've done it for you with GTA SA  . I bought a PS2, not only, but also because of GTA SA, since I wouldn't wait. I also played Mortal Combat and GT4 on it. Like you Chris76 I learnt the hard way. There is no point in buying a console expecting to get the same GTA gaming experience that you get on PC's. It just will not happen now of course it is up to you, if you want to get a console for GTA 4 because you can't wait, then feel free. However you had better set yourself up for a dissappointment because it will be nothing like playing it on a PC. That is the reason why I am not going to fork out money for a console, there is no point, I will wait for the PC version or I won't play it at all

Still spreading a bit of misinformation about I see SCLASS I really don't know where you got this "PC gaming is a minority" I mean did you miss the news that Steam has 15 million users !!!! So if that makes PC's a minority then god help the PS3 . I was wondering could you also explain to me why other Software Developers manage to get all 3 versions out the door at the same time ? Yet Rockstar for some bizarre reason can't. I dunno could it be the reason the PC version gets held back has no relevance to userbase.

 

I shall say it again the reason why the PC version is being held back has NOTHING to do with the following :-

 

a) technology can't handle it

b) piracy

c) the price of tea in china

d) low sales

e) small user base

 

Now here is the REAL REASON why PC users are not getting the game :-

 

Sony and MS have locked Rockstar into a contract to keep the game off the PC. I mean come on people use your brains. The only weapon open to Sony and MS is to take an existing PC franchise and lock PC gamers out of that franchise, thus forcing them to buy a console to play the game.

 

I think we can safely say at the moment that 360 and PC users outnumber PS3 users. Now from what I have read Rockstar could have had this game out for the 360 and PC about 2 months ago. It didn't happen, why do you think it didn't ? Oh it was due to Sony locking Rockstar into a contract which means Rockstar cannot release any version of the game till the PS3 version is done.

 

It is that same thinking behind the PC version, Sony and MS want a good 6-12 months to try and force/con/coerce PC users to buy a console to play this game. I would even wager a bet that Rockstar already has the PC version pretty much sewn up, since most of the 360 code could be reused on the PC and all they would have to do is recode the rage engine to work on the x86 based cpu's.

 

Please stop thinking this is a "number's game" it isn't. Rockstar could probably get 2-3 million PC sales from just releasing GTA 4 on steam alone with possibly another 1-2 million sales from retail channels. That is of course if they released it at the same time as the consoles which they won't so PC sales will of course suffer because of that. However don't blame PC users being a minority put the blame where it lies with Rockstar, Sony and MS all three of them are the guilty parties here not the PC format.

Microsoft do indeed need to sell more consoles, so as to justify there multi billion dollar investment. So by limiting the available platform that you can buy GTA4 on - sell more consoles. This is a logical move to make. The desires of PC gamers has zero power ( or very little in terms of a hypothetical boycott ). Youll be served at the end of feeding time.

You will all just have to accept that vested interests are in play - and also realise that NONE of you, if given the R* CEO position, would do a single thing differently.

So you are agreeing with me now then. The reason behind the PC not getting GTA 4 at the same time is down to exclusive contracts that MS and Sony have with Rockstar. So being a PC gamer I don't understand why I should have to show consoles "respect" I mean these consoles are harming my gaming pleasure, the only advantage they have over PC's is the ability of companies like MS and Sony to throw truck loads of cash around to effectively STEAL franchises from other formats. Now in my book that doesn't make something worthy of respect.

 

If I was the CEO of Rockstar I would try and have a little bit of respect for myself and not whore myself out to the highest bidder. Rockstar is acting like a pawn for these two companies, I mean sure they are getting nice wads of dosh now, but the way they are treating their fanbase (both PC and console fanbase) is going to have unfortunate long term repercussions.

I would release GTA IV on all platforms which can handle the game at the same time. It is that simple.

 

Then, when there is a monumental drop in the sales for the game on console, and a reflection of that drop as an increase in sales for PC, I'd simply say "Well, it's lucky we're catering for this PC crowd. We truly have used current technology to its full extent, and made the best possible game that we can make as a result."

Minority or not, the importance of PC in gaming is very high today and in the future.

Because of massive advertisement I will say, and did'nt your read what I said, PC sales vs 360 and PS3 sales(individualy) PC wins, and that does not count online sales. There have been no fair way to measure sales in the GTA series since GTA2, so don't use sales numbers as an argument before there are a real way no measure it.

The numbers speak for themselves SCLASS. Rockstar will be lucky to even meet the 15 million sales for GTA SA on the PS2 and that is including both the 360 and PS3 purchases. I personally expect them to sell half of what they sold for GTA SA.

 

If memory serves GTA SA sold 20 million last generation, but that was with nearly 5 million xbox's and 100 million PS2's out there. So if you were the CEO of Rockstar what would make financial sense to you, bring a game to a massively low userbase like the "next gen" consoles or bring a game to the 100 million + last gen consoles. That is of course not taking into account being paid off to develop for the "next gen" consoles.

 

I totally agree with you though Rockstar's responsibility is towards the shareholders. So Rockstar is a software publisher by it's very nature it should produce software on as many platforms that are profitable. Hmmmm but they aren't doing that because their number one interest seems to be keeping Sony and MS happy. So I would say they are letting not only their fans down but also their shareholders.

If consoles are so damn popular, they wouldn't get "massive drops in sales". They would still sell millions on each platform, while maintaining moral integrity (something that they currently DO NOT have) at the same time.

 

If they keep kicking PC gamers in the guts (like they've been doing since 2001), then they will eventually leave their eye off the ball for so long, that another developer will step-up and take their place on the PC front...and once that place has been taken, another game will become the standard, and GTA will become "just another console game".

That's a very good and important point! As I said, I'm a casual PC games player. There are actually two titles which I'm interessted in. Far Cry (and now Crysis), for multiplayer game and GTA for solo entertainment, pleasure and fun . At present I'm crazy about everything new about GTA IV, but this is only due to I'm absolutely sure it will come to PC in 2008. If I will be proven wrong, I wouldn't give a dime for GTA any longer.
