GTA IV for PC

I don't know anything about Australian prices but I'm guessing 800AUD would be enough to build a descent PC with a C2D, 2GB RAM and a 9600GT/8800GT.

I'd say closer to $1000AU, depending on the overall quality of the setup you'd wanna put together.

A decent case will still set you back about $150, you can pay about the same for a half-decent power supply, and you're looking at a minimum of $220 for a 8800gt/9600gt quality graphics card. Factor in motherboard, cpu, ram, hard drive, cd... you could blow a grand easy.

Back on topic, I have two capable machines (both core2quad, 2gig ram), and despite already owning two copies of GTA4 on the ps3 I'd buy it again in a heartbeat if it made it to the pc platform. No brainer.

Maybe he can save a little here and there. No need for an expensive case and if he doesn't OC, a cheap Mobo, some cheap RAM should do just fine. He could also recycle some parts as well, such as dvd drives and HDDs (or just get one with not too much capacity).

These are the system requirements for Mass Effect, a decidedly good looking port of an xbrick game:

Minimum System Requirements:

Operating System:

Windows XP or Vista

Processor:

2.4+GHZ Intel or 2.0+GHZ AMD

Memory:

1 Gigabyte Ram (XP)

2 Gigabyte Ram (Vista)

Video Card:

NVIDIA GeForce 6 series(6800GT or better)

ATI 1300XT or better (X1550, X1600 Pro and HD2400 are below minimum system requirements)

Hard Drive Space:

12 Gigabytes

Sound Card:

DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card and drivers

Recommended System Requirements:

Operating System:

Windows XP or Vista

Processor:

2.6+GHZ Intel or 2.4+GHZ AMD

Memory:

2 Gigabyte Ram

Video Card:

NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX or higher.

ATI X1800 XL series or higher

Hard Drive Space:

12 Gigabytes

Sound Card:

DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card and drivers – 5.1 sound card recommended

The PC version of IV probably won't look any better than this port so if Rockstar does as good a job on the port as these guys the system requirements should be very lenient.

I agree I cannot see the PC system req being any higher than these.

Oh common at least this game would require a dual Core above 2.0ghz because of all the physics !

I will say the speculated CPU requirements

Processor: AMD X2 or Phenom Multicore CPU 2.0Ghz (or Higher)

Intel E or Q series multicore CPU 1.8Ghz (or Higher)

No one has speculated internet requirements

Minimum.

Internet: 512kbps-1Mbit Download/ 128kbps or higher Upload for small scale hosting

Recommended.

Internet: 1.5Mbit Download/ 256kbps required for large scale hosting

No body has specified what service packs are required for windows either, i will do this haha !

Minimum.

Operating System: XP SP3

Recommended.

Operating System: XP SP3 or Vista SP1

Also i think recommending a dated DX9 series GPU is pushing it, i can barely run the latest games at medium smoothly, so here is my recommendations for the GPU

Minimum.

Video Card: 256MB memory, DX9 compliant.

ATi X1600

NVIDIA 7600

Recommended.

Video Card: 512MB Memory or higher, DX9 or DX10 compliant.

ATi X1900/X3600/X3800/X4800 series

NVIDIA 7900/8600/8800/9600/9800 series

I totally disagree with your processor requirements.....but your Video card req. should be pretty spot on. Those seem like the same vid. req. I would have expected.

A minmium X2 or Phenom.....that's a bit too much.....

I mean gta IV has physics...but it's not the first game to have physics....

Now I haven't had a chance to play gta IV and really see how good the physics are...but as crysis has thought us...just because a game claims it has "physics" dosen't mean it's as good as half life.....I mean honestly I have yet to play a game with physics better than HL2:EP2.

And I also doubt that SP3 will be a nessecary req.....

...Sales numbers from past games seem very lowish, even if they were just for NA and the game was released later they seem like very disappointing numbers, i would expect GTA for the PC to sell at least more than a million copies?

Sales numbers for PC versions of GTA are nothing to sneeze at I'm sure. I know a lot of developers who would love to have GTA (PC)-like sales numbers. The fact that GTA has ALWAYS sold very well on the PC is IN SPITE these other things. Consider...

1. DELAYED RELEASE. Ever since III, R* has put GTA (PC) behind the eight-ball. Additionally, the public is intentionally deceived. So, to the unassuming gamer, GTA will ONLY be coming to the console (because it is exclusive to them). Obviously, this has always been a big lie. But, unless you've caught on to their little scheme like we have, you may be tricked in to buying one of the toys (PS3 or 360).

2. MARKETING OR LACK THERE OF. How much has R* spent promoting PC GTA release? It has to virtually nothing compared to their console counterparts. Not only this, but how much has Sam and Dan Houser made themselves available for the PC gaming press? How often has anyone at R* spoken about the virtues and advantages of PC hardware? Can I laugh now? Even when PC versions of previous GTAs were released, there was very little fanfare.

The console press/media can pretty much bad mouth the PC as well. They never ask questions about any PC release. Is R* behind this evil cabal?

What about the other industry leaders who speak out making lame-brained comments like ONLY next-gen hardware can handle a certain game. It's all hype and b.s.

3. LACKLUSTER PORTS. It certainly doesn't help that R* caps the frame rates, fubars the draw distance, and provides very little polishing/added features/enhancements, etc. When it comes to the PC it still LOOKS LIKE A PORT (unnecessarily of course). Doesn't this defeat the purpose somewhat? It's not taking full advantage of PC's superior capabilities. If PC gamers were happy with console performance, you'd see more converting. It's generally a bug-free port that looks slightly better (due to higher resolutions, slightly better lighting effects/color, more filtering), but it can be so much more. Blocky characters and jerky animations don't help. Even GTA IV leaves a lot of room for improvement from what I've seen.

4. R*'s ADVERSARIAL RELATIONSHIP WITH PC GAMERS/GAMING. What was that bit about the Hot Coffee fiasco? R* initially said it was a mod. Oh really, R*? When forced to come clean, then they say, "Well, actually, that's not ENTIRELY true. It seems that we left a piece of code and a modder simply unlocked it." When your back is against the wall, blame the PC gamer. Is that it? Also, they use piracy as a scapegoat like other developers. This gets tiring after awhile. I guess we are merely second-class citizens.

Let's ignore that pirated console version out there and lets come out and say publicly that it's "hard to do" (This is what Microsoft told us to say). So, when they find blatant evidence for console piracy they sweep it under the rug. When it comes to the PC, it's OK to make unfounded claims of piracy and use it as an excuse not to bring a game to the PC. Ok, clear as mud.

When PC gamers see developers like R* selling out to MS and Sony it only hurts their image. On the other hand, many PC gamers are fiercely loyal to companies like Blizzard and Valve. They are complete polar opposites of R*. I know PC gamers who make their buying/"obtaining games by methods in which legality comes into question" decisions based on these things. Selling out only increases animosity/bitterness/resentment/etc.

5. DWINDLING SPACE FOR PC GAMES ON THE RETAIL SHELVES. Ok, this one may not be as huge as the others, but it certainly doesn't help. More and more, PC gamers are getting games digitally. However, many still prefer to have a hard copy of a game and all the printed materials. Plus, it's more than just that. It's about marketing too. Just look at the retail displays for PC games. They are usually in the back and very little effort has been taken to make them stand out. Console displays are almost always in the front, have TVs with all the systems hooked up, have marketing pieces in the windows, life-size cardboard cut-outs to help draw attention and so on. Yuck!

6. DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF THE COMPOUNDING EFFECT THAT ALL OF THE ABOVE HAVE OVER TIME. I can't stress this enough. Let's see a reversal of all the above key points and see where consoles stand after GTA V, VI, and VII come out. Let the positive press soar for PC gaming and negative press abound for the consoles.

So, no talk of console versions at all (until a month or 2 after PC release). When asked whether the console version is coming, R* gives it's obligatory "No comment." PC version is released 6 months prior to console version. ALL marketing is directed at PC version. Everyone has only good things to say about the PC (ignoring any faults). Oh, and console press is not allowed to talk about GTA leading up to any releases, PERIOD. And, anyone can badmouth the consoles to their heart's desire! lol.gif Pure fantasy, I know. But, try to picture it. The results would truly shocking.

That's a good point.....I often wondered how it would have affected R* had they given the PC star treatment.....like Blizzard, Valve, Id, and even Epic do...because as you know these companies games sell quite alot of units on the PC.

I agree but disagree on the OS service pack/OS i would have to say XP SP2 or Vista SP1 as they are good SP's.

Also the phyiscs engine is really good they use euphoria whitch is made by naturalmotion and the PE allows the models to have a mind of their own, they react realisty also the creators of the engine put in the models muscle structure so it gives a sence that the Virtual Charcters would react realistly this is a link for their website http://www.naturalmotion.com/euphoria.htm it shows some videos of how their engine works and how a AI character would react in a enviroment and the graphics engine i belive Rockstar used was the same one they used in Rockstar Table tennis

IMO man the source engine is now outdated CryTek did a imence job with their graphics engine plus crysis was a game that showed what GPU's are really capable of so i give them honour for that plus the physics engine is free from crytek as it comes with crysis and the crysis demo their are so many modders playing around with it so thats where i disagree with you

i would say the graphics Card recomended would be a 8800,9800 as the GPU would be taking up a lot of data also if your going to max the setting on a game like GTAIV i would say a quite powerful CPU would be needed e.g. intel quadcore and most people would be maxing the graphics out

end of the day most people in the gaming industry use consoles because they are a cheap and easy option plus on a console their is no installation reqired i suppose that is one reason haha but i would love to see a pc version and im sure in time Rockstar will tell us if we are getting a copy or not

but if we get GTAIV for the PC it will be amazing + we have the 360 controler now so its going to be even more win! biggrin.gif

http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=337813 wuhahahhaha,I think that now we all see what happens if you buy a console, they are totaly unreliable, with a poor graphic, and i just cant belive that some people think that consoles are more powerful then PCs,maybe this waiting is not so bad, because they will probably fix a lot of bugs in PC version!Console fanboys enjoy your GTA4 expirience!

PS. I just don't understand how could they play GTA4 with a joystick, when even flying is easy with a keyboard!

Yea XP2 is a given....but not SP3...

...I am familure with euphoria and it's capabilities....but as far as I know euphoria simulates dynamic motion for characters.....I haven really heard of it being used as the core physics engine for a game....like Havok was in HL2 and the plethoria of other games which used that.

I also agree with you in that Source engine is a bit outdated now (although Havok isn't) and the cryengine 2 is way pretter....but it just goes to show that gfx aren't everything. HL2 was better than crysis...

.....and again I find it very hard to believe that a Intel quad-core or phenom processor will be needed to run gtaIV at max.....

I mean if the physics are than hardware intensive (which I highly doubt they are) then R* would prolly reccommend some kind of Physics card (Agiea mabey...)

...honestly...really honestly....gtaIV goes not look or even seem that gfx or hardware wise intensive....

The way I see it....if you can run crysis...gtaIV should be no prob !!!

and in that last part.......

NO WAY am I playing gta IV on the PC with an xbox360 controller.....I want to use mouse/kbrd....

The controller might work for you but I want mouse/kbrd ... smile.gif

Because that's the console kiddies that I hate. You know, those that are saying:

tha pc is not powerful enoff for gta4, haha ya can't play the game, you are waiting like an idiot, how pitiful, i know that's the pc section and i'm going to spoil to piss you off

I have nothing against the guy that owns a console just because pc is not his stuff.

But, try to picture it. The results would truly shocking.

...Sales numbers from past games seem very lowish, even if they were just for NA and the game was released later they seem like very disappointing numbers, i would expect GTA for the PC to sell at least more than a million copies?

http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=337813 wuhahahhaha,I think that now we all see what happens if you buy a console, they are totaly unreliable, with a poor graphic, and i just cant belive that some people think that consoles are more powerful then PCs,maybe this waiting is not so bad, because they will probably fix a lot of bugs in PC version!Console fanboys enjoy your GTA4 expirience!

PS. I just don't understand how could they play GTA4 with a joystick, when even flying is easy with a keyboard!

I recommend to read this publication from Valve

http://www.valvesoftware.com/publications/...Development.pdf

It says a lot about console reliability

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's possible to play GTA with joystick, but it is stupid, because with auto-aim you miss half of the game, and without it and mouse easy mode becomes hardcore. And the ones, who say that it is a matter of training are wrong, because with mouse you control position, which is a natural type of control, and controlling aim speed with analog stick is innatural

Great find. I'd love to get a console gamer's reaction to that. Anyway, you think it would help to forward a copy on to R*? sly.gif
