GTA IV for PC

This whole argument is all completely rediculous.

The relative strengths and weaknesses of each platform is not the issue, nor is the capabilities of the 'average' gaming pc according to the Steam serveys. (Although for the record, $800 or £400 PCs are more powerful than consoles, because that price will get you a 1-2 year old pc, containing technology newer than the consoles. People don't own powerful PCs on average according to Steam. But they don't need to. An Intel6300 with 2gb Ram and an Ati x1950 graphics card is last years budget cheapo price spec, but eats Bioshock and Call of Duty 4, at higher resolutions than a PS3, for breakfast, and cost me about $600 from Ebay 12 months ago, as like most people, I already had the monitor/keyboard etc.)

Ultimately, regardless of whether the consoles are powerful or the pc more so, R* has to decide wether it is worth releasing the game on the PC considering the cost involved in porting it compared to the projected returns, when considering the PC's problem with piracy. Talk of how great the modding scene on the PC is, is irrelivant. I mean, 10 year old game Baldur's Gate has a great modding scene, but it only extends the playability of the game for those who have already bought it. People don't often buy games simply for the mods available for it (with the exception of the big big mods, like Counterstrike).

Ultimately, we don't know if R* will release the game on the PC. But... if the PC gaming scene is as good as it was when San Andreas came out, if the risk of loss in sales due to piracy isn't worse than when SA came out and if R* is acting in the same manner as it did prior to the PC conversaion of SA; then there is no reason at all to suspect they won't release the game on the PC.

However, I'm pretty sure that the gaming scene isnt as good and piracy is worse. Whether it is worse enough to put them off will remain to be seen. I for one hope not, and I think this conversation has proved that there is a big interest in the game coming out on the PC.

Even a regular PC doesn't have to be that expensive to upgrade. dozingoff.gif

Last year I spent a little over £200 (about £100 LESS than a 360 at the time I think) to upgrade my PC.

For that I got:

500W PSU

MSI motherboard

AMD X2 4000 CPU

1Gb Kingston or Crucial (can't remember which) RAM

x1950pro 512Mb GFX card

Because it's a PC I could reuse things like DVD drives, case, HDDs, monitor, keyboard, mouse etc... and either pass-on the old components or sell them.

That PC happily runs games like Bioshock and Crysis. It runs GTA:SA at 1600x1200 (max resolution of my monitor) just fine. So I'm sure that if GTA:IV comes out on a PC it'll be perfectly playable.

I guess I won't need to do any upgrades for maybe another 2 years say, by which time the PS4 and X720 will be out costing at least £300/400 and I'll be able to upgrade again for £200.

However, I'm pretty sure that the gaming scene isnt as good...

And we all know who to thank for that. We give thanks to companies like Sony, Microsoft, Take 2 and Rockstar Games, for pushing the majority of the population onto the duller experience; an experience which comes with gaming on a PlayStation or XBox.

...and piracy is worse. Whether it is worse enough to put them off will remain to be seen.

Well, if piracy puts Rockstar off releasing it for PC, then they are even stupider than I know they already are. Their very business model with GTA III onwards, is one which actually heavily encourages the piracy of the PC version, as it is a cheap, delayed console port, which many will not feel like paying for by the time it hits the game-store shelves.

The XBox 360 version will take a complete hammering on the peer-to-peer/piracy front. I for one, will be expecting it online in the next few days, and I will do my best to spread it around to any sorry soul who wants to play it that badly.

Not the PC version though...nope...the PC version is worth purchasing, and I will buy it. When a company f*ck-asses about, prancing around like a little magical pixie-horse; with their butt-f*cking sessions between Dan Houser, Peter Moore (ex-Microsoft now), and many other freaky, disgusting Sony and Microsoft executives, then they deserve to have their sub-par console-only releases spread around the internet like wildfire...totally free of charge.

As is summed up with a common analogy which has been used in this thread -- Even the most disobedient dog is rewarded with good behavior.

The PC version...worth the money?...yes.

The console version?...no.

Rockstar Games...worth taking the piss and abusing the f*ck out of for what they've done?...yes. << This is what most of the fun is with this thread.

I was referring to this :When discussing cost with PC, I think it's important to focus on INCREMENTAL COST; that is, how much extra does it cost you to take your current PC from where it's at right now to where it needs to be in order to make it "gaming ready"? Sounds to me your comparing the cost of upgrading a basic pc to play games. Why else would I bring up a basic pc?

He's speaking of somewhat older gaming PC. Not basic, regular, everyday or whatever. When you buy a gaming rig, you always leave room for upgrades (PSU, good MB). Of course, if there is a major technological turn, then you will need to do a big overhaul, but in normal circumstances you need only to upgrade CPU and GPU, leaving MB and memory intact.

Who says you need a $1k tv? Consoles can be used with computer monitors.

A lot of people brag about having both consoles and a HD TV. That sums up to at least 1500$ (for a sh*tty HD TV) and you still pay ridiculous prices for the games.

Again you speak as if the pc gets every game. Uncharted is only on PS3, Pokemon is only on Wii, Stalker is only on pc. If you want to play all the great games then you have to buy every console and have a pc. I get a kick out of the pc and console fanboys.

For the last time, he's saying that games for PC are for PC. They don't get divided. So, if I have an Intel CPU and you have a AMD, we both can play ALL THE GAMES FOR PC (THOSE THAT ARE RELEASED FOR PC, NOT THOSE RELEASED FOR CONSOLES). Also, I wouldn't touch Uncharted with a ten foot pol. The same goes for Pokemon.

The 360 launched in fall 2005. Only the highest end pc's could match the 360. Remember all the COD2 comparisons? We all know high end pc's are $1500+

Define high end. For 1200$ you (or anybody else) can get a PC which runs most games at max on high resolutions. Games that can't be run on max, you will have to settle for high "only" (like Crysis). You can always go for the most expensive components, but then for triple price you get 10 to 20% in improved performance. There are always best buy components which enable you to have a real next-gen gaming rig for the cost of both of those nice little consoles (PS3 and X360).

Rockstar Games...worth taking the piss and abusing the f*ck out of for what they've done?...yes. << This is what most of the fun is with this thread.

To prove you wrong about the fact it won't come to the PC because of it's "high graphics" I'll show a picture I made in my GTA San Andreas on PC.

Once again this was about what it takes to make a regular pc "gaming ready" not about what the average gamer has. But since you brought it up.

Min specs means about 10-20fps on low at a res that lcd's cant even handle. I dont see how anyone could enjoy a game below recommended reqs.

How much performance difference do you really think there is between 1280x960 and 1280x720? 1-2fps maybe?

I said Bioshock dipped into the 20's not below.

Bioshock has almost the same reqs. Take a look at these benches

The x1950pro is comparable to the 7900gtx and averaged 41fps on high. I was usuually in the mid 40's but certain areas did drop into the 20's.

More benchmarks

1280x1024 medium settings

6800gt 18fps (6600 is the min req for Bioshock)

8600gt 37fps  you should send Firing Squad some performance tips. Even on low I dont see how you could average in the 60's. Do you have a magical 8600?

http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/biosho...mance/page8.asp

Erm I think you need some glasses wow.gif Did you actually bother to examine those fancy graphs and charts ? The lowest Resolution they ran that test in was 1280 x 1200 <--- Note nearly TWICE the vertical resolution that the console plays the game in. I never stated that my 8600gt could do 60fps at that resolution, it would be stupid to make a claim like that. I stated my media PC with 8600gt can get 60fps easily at 1280 x 800. I could install Bioschock and show you the Fraps log if you don't believe me but to be honest I don't want to subject my PC to such a god awful game again (and I think I used all my installs up too).

You keep throwing up these benchmarks and then CLAIM it shows an old PC can't run the game. Hey how about you find some actual benchmarks that are run in the consoles resolution of around 1280 x 720. That is the only fair way to compare. You know we have been here before, there were people like you when the PS1 came out, there were people like you when the PS2 came out and I have no doubt there will be people like you when the PS4 comes out. I still stand by the fact that you have serious issues with your PC if your 7900gtx dips below 20fps on Bioshock.

Who says you need a $1k tv?

I was just talking about the consoles themselves. Purchasing a proper HDTV is a whole other issue. Not only are decent-sized HDTV TVs costly by comparison, they are incapable of displaying resolutions anywhere near what a computer LCD display can (up to 2560x1600).

360 and PS3 are the same platform? mercie_blink.gif

There are console games and PC games. EVERY PC game is compatible with every PC. The same cannot be said for consoles. To be able to play every console game, you need to own EVERY console. We're talking about ALL 3, plus all previous generations if you want to be able to play older games too. If you haven't gotten this by now, you probably aren't going to get it.

It's a costly proposition. Why spend so much money on something that ONLY focuses on games, unlike a PC. I'd rather dump more money into graphics cards, CPUs, MBs, and RAM. You get so much more bang for your buck.

Exclusivity communist? Its as capitalist as you can get.

They are free to do as they wish, but I see exclusivity as an anti-competitive way of limiting a gamer's choice. Hey, I appreciate freedom and having choices, and consoles fly in the face of that.

Again you speak as if the pc gets every game.

No, I'm saying every game that comes to a PC can be played ON a PC. See above.

An interesting final pre-review from 1up.com had Andrew Pfister writing this...

* You'll likely notice the same graphical "quirks" that the series has dealt with since the jump to 3D. The same filmlike, grainy framerate exists and usually holds steady, but it can momentarily dip when things get frantic. There's some long-distance graphical fade-in as well as some street-level hazards that appear only after you hit them. Traffic will be nonexistent one second, then three cars deep when you rotate the camera back around, and then completely disappear when your wanted level gets to two or three stars (which is oh-so-fun when you desperately need a getaway vehicle). But even these problems have been "upgraded" in a sense for GTA4: An artistic application of filters hides some of the uglier character models, there's more types of cars to choose from, and overall, the feel of the city trumps any of the shortcomings we're familiar with by now. But you'll be able to see that in the screenshots and eventual videos.

You can find the whole article here: http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3167410&p=37

Looks like if we get a port, we'll be looking at much of the same "issues" we had to deal with in past GTAs. This is why GTA is limited by consoles. R* needs to get with the program and develop the game around the PC. I don't remember having deal with these sorts of problems in Mafia. It was much better by far in this respect. Thank goodness for Mafia II.

You need glasses cause I never said Bioshock dipped below 20fps. When I had that setup all my benches were on par with similar pc's.

People like me? You mean people who arent pc or console fanboys? Someone who looks at it objectively instead of subjectively?

2560x1600? To stay at that res with current games you have to run sli with the latest cards for decent fps. More than the price of all 3 consoles and 2 sli'd 8800gtx's cant run Crysis maxed at that res. Even the 9900's probably wont handle that res with games in 3 years.

You dont need an hdtv you can use a computer monitor.

My 360 practically pays for itself considering I can rent games. Do I want to spend $40 or $50 on the pc version of R6 Vegas, Assassins Creed or Condemned when I could just rent for $8 on the 360? Plus I'm a Ninja Gaiden Fanboy and I play Madden with friends sometimes.

If I had to limit myself to 1 platform i would go with pc but its a nice change of pace to sit back with a controller sometimes. Many games these days arent worth buying but i still want to play them. I dont warez. Renting on 360 is the answer. '

You can talk about the issues caused by the consoles all day. But we'll never know what would have been if Rockstar hadnt signed with Sony. Stop acting all high and mighty. If you were in their position you would have signed with Sony too.

GTA 2 – a 2D title released three years after gamers had embraced 3D spectacles such as Tomb Raider – hadn’t sold in the sort of numbers that matched Rockstar’s expectations, so awareness of GTA as a brand was low

Mafia II will be available on Xbox 360®, PLAYSTATION®3, and Games for Windows, with gameplay being virtually identical across all platforms.

Uncharted has the best combat I've ever seen in a shooter on a console or pc. You're missing out.

In 2004 for $1200 you could have gotten a high end rig with a 6800gt and in 3 years you already need to upgrade or play new games on low. A $400-$500 upgrade at least. An no, Bioshock or Crysis on low dont look as good as Doom 3 or HL2 on high. Not even close.

Top of the line now will need to be upgraded within 2-3 years.

Console gaming is certainly cheaper in the U.S. since theirs only a $10 price difference between games and you can rent console games. If its better it costs more. Gaming is no exception.

Gaming is no exception.

...Maybe you should start up Crysis, put all the settings on low, play for a bit, then start up HL2 all on high including AAx16 then say that.

Its the pop up that kills Crysis on low. Bioshock looks awful on low.

I JUST CAN'T BELIVE THIS!They treat us PC gamers like animals.

We also get that stuff dude, ain't that all in the new patch? If not it will be in the newer patch...

Even if we dont look at all the user made content. Filefront has 4gb worth of mp map downloads. http://callofduty.filefront.com/files/Call...ty_4/Maps;10262

But we are animals. Stupid pr*cks that seek a little bit of justice and respect in this god forsaken world. Like I said, EA is on my sh*t list and they are there to stay. These guys are ruining gaming for everybody.

Yes, but a lot of people have both PS3 and x360. And everybody compares consoles (x360 and ps3) with the PC. So we're saying that this sad exclusivity business that exists in console world between consoles doesn't exist in PC world between PCs. I hope you understand now what I wanted to say.

I have seen it and I don't think much of it. The auto aim feature is just lame in any game. I want to aim MYSELF since I am the one PLAYING not my platform (PC, console, whatever).

Yeah, with consoles you paly the games on low ALL the time. With PC you can UPGRADE, with consoles when you upgrade you THROW the console away and need to buy a brand NEW one. You just don't have an argument here.

Yeah, especially when taking into account all the free time you get when console is in shop for repair.

Also, DO NOT double post. You do this all the time and it sucks. There's the edit button - use it. Please.

Lazlow actually mentioned the PC version on his show recently. Nothing "official", though.
