You talk like you have to build to each and everey games, that is far from the truth. New machines can for about 1000$ can run games atleast 3 years then the only thing you have to upgrade is graphics and maybe RAM

Right, it doesn't take high-end hardware to get console-like performance (25-30 fps, lower resolutions, etc.). As a secondary PC, I have a 6-year old system that is equally capable to today's next-gen consoles and runs GTA III and VC better than the PS2 could ever dream about. Oh, and you usually don't have to worry about not being able to run previous gen games or exclusive b.s. Titles exclusive to one brand of PC don't exist, so you might as well say that the cost of a console is the COMBINED cost of the PS3 AND the Xbox 360.

 

I haven't bought a new PC or bought PC parts for a whole system in years. It's always been a part here or there as technology advances. That's one of the great things about using a PC. Why pitch a perfectly good optical drive, case, hard drive, power supply, cables, ram, etc.? When you buy a console, you aren't getting as much bang for your buck because you have purchase these again when the NEW next-gen system comes out - such a waste. This only takes away from the meat-and-potatoes, "bang for your buck" graphics processing leaving you with product that will always be behind.

I custom build my computers, and I'm very happy with the result.

 

I recomend everybody to learn how to do it, it is not difficult, if you are unsure about stuff get a friend who knows to helps you with the first build. Complete built PC from the stores often have cheap low quality hardware where they can hide it, like HDD, motherboard, and RAM.

 

Example

They tell you how much RAM it has but not always what type of RAM

They tell you how much HD space you have, but not always tell you what type of HD (sata, sata2, or pata)

The motherboard is almost always the cheap type, cheap Motherboard can cripple your PC seriously.

 

Tips on what type of motherboard you should buy

- Never buy a motherbooard with a built in GFX card

- Make sure you buy one that support the latest CPU socket, have the latest GFX slott technology

- Make sure that the motherboard can handle your cpu buss speed and ram buss speed(it is also wise to have a CPU buss speed that match your RAM buss speed)

Thiss does not have to be expensive, athough I used 300$ on my motherboard

Finally, I just want to ask you if it is possible for a team of enthusiasts with basic programing skills to port a game from 360 to PC.

Euphoria runs on Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

 

RAGE is only Playstation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360 currently, but Rockstar has developet that engine and I'm surethey can develop it for PC if they want, maybe they already done that but not made it public cause that will hint a PC version of GTA IV.

It really depends on what the situation is at the time. I got about fivish years out of my P4-2.4ghz + 512mb + 6600gt. However early 2007, it was time to move on. Now AGP has been royally dropped that meant a new MB, CPU, RAM and of course graphics card. With IDE going the way of the dinosaur. I treated myself to a new hard disc and SATA dvd writer too. So it was really a major rebuild, about the only thing I kept was the case and the psu.

 

However even with a new MB, CPU, GPU, RAM, HD and DVD I still got it to under £500. Self builds are the best and I would say the ONLY way to do PC gaming, it isn't hard and it feels so damn rewarding. I did this build about the same time the PS3 came out, so for £80 more I got a hell of a lot more for my money.

As SynTerro said there is a version of Euphoria on the PC. The graphics engine, ie R.A.G.E is Rockstars own attempt at producing a game engine. It seems to be resonably portable since they are bringing it to the Wii, there is ono reason why it could not be brought to the PC, if anything it would be quite easy for them to do it with PC's having a FULL instruction set and Out of Order Execution .

 

As for how much it would cost to do it, that is really anyone's guess. However I would like to suggest it would cost them NOTHING . That is right I am saying they could do GTA 4 on the PC and it wouldn't cost them a penny . I bet you are wondering what my secret is aren't you. The answer is get Nvidia or ATI to pay for the port or better still AMD or Intel. I am sure any of those companies would love to cough up a million or two to have their "Best with ...." video at the start of GTA 4.

 

As for a sort of "home brew" project to convert the console versions to run on the PC, I wouldn't hold my breath it would take a large team of decoders and programmers to do a conversion I am afraid. The only way we will see GTA 4 on the PC is if Rockstar do it. However we have to remain optimisitic, after all what business would refuse to cater for a market of millions with a product that cost them virtually NOTHING to make !!!!!!!!

Neither would I. But Vista is the future (probably) and sooner or later most people will switch (somewhere around Vista SP2 I presume ) because its' the natural way of things. Don't forget that new PC get Vista pre-installed so it's hard for new users to avoid it. Also, hardware support will be increasingly harder to find. Especially for the laptops. Today when you buy the laptop you get the Vista pre-installed (bundled in the price) and NO driver CD. So, if you need to install SO again, you need to go to manufacturer site. But, if it's some crappy company in few years time they won't have support for that laptop anymore.

IMHO, XP is better then Vista (resources wise), but I think this is besides the point. Hardware is going on and getting an additional gig or two of RAM just for the Vista is not that big of a deal (more of less).

 

What (who) is against the main stream? XP or Vista? "We" or "they"? Keep in mind that MS makes A LOT of money from A LOT of companies that are being forced to upgrade once the new OS is out. They SET the path of the stream. They have more then enough to pay the developers wages, force the Vista down the home users throats and to fund that console freak of theirs. All with cash earned form PC

On my side, I have choosen the parts of my pc too. The only mistake I made was not taking a sound card because of the 7.1 in the mother card (no eax).

 

 

 

As I said before about Vista, I don't really think GTA4 would be a Vista exclu. The only reason for making Vista only is switching the game to DX10 only. I trust in R*s laziness for this (too much work for them).

Rockstars have to release GTA IV on PC. It`s not just about making money, but it`s also about keeping your fans and compete with the other games like these. The developers of Mafia do plan to release Mafia 2 on consoles, as well as a PC version. It`s official that the PC version of Mafia 2 will be released 1-2 months after the console versions. GTA started as a PC game, and it have to continue that way.

 

If Rockstars walk the same path as Lucas Arts did with Star Wars and Indiana Jones games the fans will be mad. Lucas Arts released Dark Forces, Jedi Knight 2, Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy on PC, and now that plane to release the next game in the series @ Wii, Nintende Portable, PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, but NO PC??? After the 4th time R* finally responded to my e-mails! I used an email adres that can't be traced to me to make sure they don't know who's really mailing them. Entfortunately they gave me the exact same mail that was posted here a couple of pages back although they left out the part of the console releasedates. So they might actually read your mail and edit the standard answeringmail to fit your mail sinceI told them I didn't have the money to buy a console.

Mafia isn't a GTA clone. It was infact made at the same time that GTA III was made so they couldn't use the GTA series as their major inspiration source because GTA2 was still with a dropdown camera. And for a 'GTA clone' it is one of the best ever made and they actualy respect PC gamers so we have every right to give them more respect than R*. And you can't possibly know which one is better since neither of them is released yet. All we have to judge them is screenshots and trailers and th graphics and feeling of Mafia II look much better than GTA IV from what we can tell.

This is plausible because MS has their d*ck up R* backside orifice so deep and hard that they can do as the please. If MS wants to try to boost Vista sales by means of manipulating furthermore GTAIV, R* will happily do it.

 

Good thing is, like MISTO and others have pointed it out before, that people at R* are to god damn lazy to convert GTAIV to DX10 since the game itself uses DX9. So if they manage to lock it somehow and make it Vista "only" some "remedy" will resurface in due time.

 

EDIT:

007 RoadRunner, could you please post the contents of your mail to them? It seems we need to establish what exactly are they scanning for in incoming mail. Probalby a couple of words make them push the panic button. Like "PC", "backstabber", "honesty", "honor", "respect" and so on.

Maybe they actually read all of them and when they dn't feel like it's innocent enough they don't reply. But I did had to wait 7 days before I got an answer so they're not really fast with replying.

Well, they probably do read most incoming mail, but there must be a lot of material, especially now when the release date is near. I have sent my first mail to them something like 12 day ago. After one week I just forwarded the same mail to them as a reminder. The content of that mail was rather normal, nothing to hyped. However on Wednesday I sent them a sort of hate mail so it most probably will not get responded. Probably the same will happen if I send them any more mails from my address.

 

Well, f*ck'em. We'll know soon enough. If they don't say anything in three months time after the consoles release, that will be it. We got a wind in our backs, though. The wind called Mafia2. Not only it might be better then GTAIV, but since T2 is their publisher they don't want GTAIV to interfere with Mafia2 sales on PC. So, IMHO if Mafia2 is scheduled in something like 8 to 12 months, GTAIV should be released in 4 to 6 moths. Otherwise they'll hardly make any profit at all.

I've always found that the drive-by controlls - no matter how you set them - are awkward. I switched flying chopper to

my mouse buttons. I found it weird to fly with the mouse and the arrows. Just because it works in BF2 (greatest game to be released by Hitler EA) doesn't mean it'll work in every other game that features helicopters.
