MISTO, the problem is that 135000 KB. How the hell did they think that will suffice?! You can increase the value manually, but it still remains constrained because of it's design.

 

(Del) I like the gangs also. I thought giving Italians the part of the town around the graveyard (North-West part of LS). The main character would be some Leones competitor who would contact you some time after you get back in LS. The Russians would be closely connected with Ballas and would get the control of the docs (South-East part of LS.)

 

Also, gang wars should be upgraded since they are somewhat boring. I thought of cutting down on number of territories (7 max per gang) but make the gang wars themselves somewhat more difficult. Remaking of Vigilante missions would be also nice. I even made a script, but never got to the coding business.

 

My RC missions would not be the pain in the ass like Zeros. That Berkley character was Zero's enemy, right? So, some time after you complete the Zero's missions, Berkley calls you and tells you that he needs you to do something. CJ is loyal to his friends, so he tells him he can stuff it. Berkley doesn't react well on that so he decides to attack you and Zero once again. Firstly you would need to reach some point, then a cut scene, then Berkley attacks you with those little Red Bastards. The are small, but put a bomb on those babies and they cause havoc. Afterwards you can control those RC cars (like in GTA III) to blow up some of Berkleys men. This is only a rough idea. I checked the thing with the cars and it works nicely. When you entice those Barons to bomb and shoot at you... well, it's a lot of fun cool.gif.

 

Like I said, you can achieve a lot with some SCM coding and editing of config files.

As far as I know, what you are trying to accomplish is done by means of editing two files. Firstly you need some file (I think it's water.dat) with which you can control the water level (this is well documented on the web.) For a map (hills and walleyes) you need a pic with a lot of "depth" (picture of clouds would do the trick) and then that gets converted with some program I forgot about (again, this is well documented on the web and rather easy to do.) I don't know if there's any integrated map editor.

 

While making a blank map is not hard, obviously problems arise when you need to import all the objects into it. That's a lot of work, so my respect goes to people form such projects as Gostown and Myriad Islands. IMHO, SCM modding in comparison is a lot easier.

Oh but...if you've made a mod for a specific game, and you've released that mod to the public, then you technically can call yourself a "modder".

AHA! You are correct, but I haven't released anything biggrin.gif. I wanted to make this small addon which would go along withe the game (basically missions only, while maintaining the original SCM, via CLEO scripts.) Afterwards I remade the radios station and I started talking my friends into some voice acting (for missions and cut scenes) but then I just got overrun by the whole thing. It's necessary to go step by step.

 

About map editing, it's not that hard, but making a nice town is. I personally just love the outlay of Gostown, it's really great. It reminds me a lot of LC. Myriad Islands are not that nice IMHO but still OK.

DML If EA buys them off that would be catastrophe. They are what they are because they are not EA.

 

Plus, anybody tell me if Im wrong, GTA is only as big as it is because of consoles. If GTA had not gone to the ps2 it wouldnt be so big.

Take2 is already a catastrophe, we PC gamers don't like EA either but atleast there is a chance that they threat PC gamers better. For Valve to buy out Take2 would be a dream.

EA may be EA, but Take 2 is not what Take 2 used to be. Take 2 has turned into a console-whoring company; releasing 99% of its games as console-only. Take 2 has lost touch, and I wouldn't mind seeing (or wouldn't care) what happens if EA were to take control.

 

About GTA not being as big if it weren't for consoles: Here's my scenario for the alternate years 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004:

 

- Rockstar North/DMA Design develop GTA 2 after GTA 1, both games are released on the PC and PlayStation, and begin to spawn a large fanbase.

- Rockstar North, knowing it was time to go full, street-level 3D, begin developing GTA III, with the full intention of making the most of current (2000, 2001) PC technology, as well as developing for the PlayStation 2 at the same time.

- GTA III is released, and all fans from GTA 1 and GTA 2 are happy that they have the next installment of GTA to play. They are so happy, that they spread the word, beyond the large advertising campaign, and draw thousands of new gamers (PC and console) onto the franchise.

- After the XBox launch, Rockstar North develop GTA: Vice City for the PC, PS2, and the XBox. They use the same engine, but they improve it in certain areas to better-suit newer PC hardware (2002), and the new XBox console, as well as better optimize for the PS2.

- GTA: Vice City is released, and all fans from GTA 1, GTA 2, and GTA III, are once-again happy that they have the next installment of GTA to play. Being almost totally cross-platform, the game reaches millions more gamers (however, excluding Nintendo).

- Rockstar North then repeat the steps for improving the engine and making the next GTA -- San Andreas. It is released, and sells millions of copies for all platforms. Once again, gamers are happy.

- Freed from any f*cked-up obligations to console manufacturing companies, Rockstar North is now free to focus efforts on their new GTA - GTA IV (2004 onwards).

 

Instead of this happening though, here is what really happened....

I would like to see kicked T2s ass by EA and I don't think it could get worse as with T2 as publisher. The game would be already made by R*, so if the team persists, I can't see much changing.

 

GTA was born on the PC, if it would be a console game from the beginning I never had played it... I think it would be at least a huge success if it was only for PC. But as DML I think, the biggest success had been possible if the game were everytime out for all platforms (PS3, XBox and PC) simultaniously.

It's true but soon consoles will f*cked up and the only normal thing will be PC. It's like GTASA: Xbox version wasn't popular, PS2 version was sh*t in graphics and productivity so we have PC version only for normal playing.

We just have to talk about Mafia here so now and then because if we'd be staying with R* and GTA it becomes so pessimistic one could even commit suicide after reading too much of it so it keeps us positive and let's us see that not the entire world is bad, jst a big part.

I know it's not a forum about Mafia but that really shows how R* are suckers  smile.gif

I think it's appropriate to draw comparisons and differences between R* and T2 Czech/Illusion. Both companies share the same parent, Take 2. Obviously, it's easy run out of PC scraps (of information) when it comes to GTA IV seeing how there is a virtual cabal working against the PC platform right now (R* and media). I'm beginning to think R* needs to be put right up there with Apple, because their tendencies/actions are becoming more and fascist. IF T2 Czech makes the right decisions concerning my two key issues they will stay off my 'naughty list'. They are:

 

1) Designing a game around the HIGHEST common denominator - the PC (i.e. NOT the console toys). This is one giant facepalm! Should be a no brainer to design around the PC to maximize your profits (highest quality finished product available for each respective platform). Designing a game around a console should only make sense where it is a console exclusive (like Pokeman). How do companies expect to spearhead growth on PCs when PC gamers are force to settle for subpar ports (by their very nature)? It's like upscaling a VHS videotape to 1080p.

 

2) Simultaneous release across all platforms (i.e. NOT delaying PC versions for the sake of inflating console sales). I'm so tired of this. Give these bastards an inch and they take a mile. You hear people say "Well, it just gives them time to polish the PC version." I say NO, screw that. You let them do that and the next thing you know we'll be waiting longer and longer till companies decide not to make PC versions at all. PC gamers should never settle for second fiddle. Enough is enough, and there is NO legitimate reason why a PC version can't be polished alongside console versions.

 

It's a damn shame there's no one to throw money around for PC gamers like Sony and MS. I understand the system, but really question their judgment. I personally feel it's a case of the game industry as whole shooting itself in the foot. They NEED to keep both platforms healthy. If you kill off PC gaming the technology that trickles down to the consoles will slow, which means less advancement in gaming for consoles in the future.

I support design around High end PC, there is nothing wrong with that as long as gamers have the option to scale down the graphics to fit their machine(did I mention that I played crysis on my 5 year old machine, specs on sig). Yes many people are happy with just a HDTV and a console, this does not mean they should ignore the core of dedicated PC gamers and leave them angry. Console have allot to thank PC gamers for, we have testet online and lan gaming for years(what works and what don't), we have tested ingame voice chat for years, we have developed online gaming for years(yes I mean the mod community). PC have for decades pushed and set the standard in technology and graphics, where PC gaming is the major push factor. If it where for the consoles 5-7 years technology loops to push technology we would have been far behind today.

I'm not talking about high-end PCs. Even the modest of PCs are capable of what a measly console can put out. It's 2 year old trickle-down PC hardware for gosh sakes. You aren't seriously going to contest that, are you? That horse has been beaten time and time again on this thread.

 

PCs have a small following compared to consoles? Is that the gospel according to SCLASS? Care to back up any more untenable positions you have?

 

BTW, I would put money down every day of the week for the number of PC gamers that have a system that outclasses any console over the number of console players that are playing their games on an HDTV.

 

If you want to wallow in the mud, I suggest visiting one of the fanboy topics. You should feel right at home there.

SCLASS I see where you are coming from but ..... is it any different to what PS3 owners keep saying. How many times have you heard a PS3 owner say "oh if this was a PS3 only game it would be much better and would use blu-ray" ? Now what GTA_Godfather is saying on a technical level actually makes sense. You make the game for the most powerful system then you scale the game down to lesser systems. I mean we have seen PS3 owners screaming and yelling about that for a year now. You go to any forum and you will see PS3 owners saying the game should be developed on the PS3 and scaled down to work on the 360. The same could be said here, do the game for a decent spec PC then scale it down it makes sense TECHNICALLY because that way everyone would get a game that utilises their chosen format to the fullest.

 

Now you are quite right at the moment the consoles are where the money is at, but one has to wonder how long that will last. Let's look at Crysis, I believe that cost $10 million to make and has already surpassed the 1 million units sold mark, now let's look at Killzone 2. Have you seen the price tag for that game ? Yep it is close to $60 million it is costing 6 times what Crysis cost which means for it to make any money it will have to sell close to 5-6 million on the PS3. Now as far as I am aware even GTA 4 isn't predicted to shift 6 million copies, so I doubt Killzone 2 will. Not looking so healthy now is it, these next gen consoles are surviving because both MS and Sony are using resources from other departments to keep them going. You have to wonder how long that will last. The PC on the other hand has NO ONE subsidising it, the PC has to provide profits for everyone, not just the developers. So you may think it is PC gaming that is doomed, but right at this moment I think it is console gaming that is giving analysts most concern.

 

I also think you are underestimating the PC market, which is understandable if you read all the scare stories. There are currently 15 million users on Steam, what do you think they are doing ? well I am going to guess they are buying games. Then there is Crysis which has shifted well over 1 million units so far. How about Witcher and Stalker both of which are well onto hitting 2 million units. Lets look at the Orange box by Valve, the PC OUTSOLD both consoles combined !!!! There is clearly a market there and companies like Rockstar are neglecting it for short term monetary gain.

 

It pains me the way you try to undermine the PC userbase, you make it sound like PC games only ever sell 3 copies when infact a well produced game will achieve just as much success as a PS3 game. The reason why some games don't is down to other factors (not necessarily piracy). Let's look at the Orange Box again, it was released first on the PC and 360. It did tremendously well on both systems, it was then launched on the PS3 it was a half arsed port and was over a month after the other systems, it only sold a few hundred thousand units on the PS 3 sad.gif . Does that sound familiar to you at all ? does it sound exactly like the scenario that Rockstar have been doing to the PC for years ?

 

There is plenty of space and profit available to everyone and there is plenty of space for both the PC and consoles to thrive. However greed has overtaken the industry and it will have dangerous long term repurcussions. Does it make good business sense to neglect one format in the hope of selling more copies on another format, NO it doesn't it makes sense if you want to be greedy, all you are doing is harming the format you delay the game for which some would argue is MS and Sony's intentions anyway.

Well look at it this way:

 

(this analogy has been done to death I believe, but I'll use it again)

 

When they set out to film The Matrix, they did not use a VHS-C camcorder. They, instead, used proper 35mm or 70mm film, or high-resolution digital video cameras. This way, the film could be fully presented in its original resolution (35mm cinema projector), bloody good resolution (Blu-ray), decent resolution (DVD), and old-school resolution (VHS).

 

How does this apply to GTA IV? Frame-resolution talk aside. The biggest issue is that, when the time comes to port the game to PC, the developers will not want to go through and remodel every person, car, building, and piece of scenery. So, as a result of this, the PC version's only enhancement over the console version (apart from controls and modding etc), will be the possible higher-res textures, and maybe a more wider use of lighting and filtering (AA, HDR, AF, post-filtering etc). Not enough difference to justify a 6-month wait, and especially not good enough since, if Rockstar North knew what they were doing, provision for such lighting and filtering systems would already be built-in to the 3D engine.
