GTA IV for PC

My new laptop from work came with Vista. None of the GTA games worked on it. So I set my system up to dual boot Vista and XP. This way i can play GTA and work on XP and learn Vista too.

Depending on the texturing and shadow effect issues in porting it over to PC they may go vista. both for DX 10 support and for better dual and quad processesor support.

Usually they release "other versions" of the GTA games between April and June of the next year. I think all the PC versions were June releases. But don't quote me on that.

If they do the same here, Vista might be a real possability because it will have been out for a full year by then and because MS will likely push for Rockst*r to support their new OS(IE pay them some cash).

But this is all speculation. We'll see what happens next spring or summer.

Well even it does end-up a vista only release I doubt it'll be heavily DX10 dependent so someone will come-up with a hack to get it working on XP.

Do MS actually check if these games really will only run on ME II sorry vista wink.gif ? Could the game be sold as vista only but by some freak occurance will run on XP as well moto_whistle.gif

Perhaps they might even go Hot Coffee and 'accidentally' leave all the DX9 code in there for someone to activate, I dunno gta4.exe -dx9 perhaps tounge2.gif

random question, does anybody know how to add a mod to gta on PC ive been trying and got nowere

You are probably best asking that question in the GTA SA forum, I personally never bothered with Mods they tend to screw the game up too much for my tastes.

I'm still concerned about my graphics card (nVidia GeForce 7600 GS 256 MB ) not being able to run GTA 4 ... I won't upgrade it

I would say you are probably pushing it with the 7600 GS at best you will be able to play GTA 4 but you will have to do it in low quality and with draw distance turned down. If you want to get an idea you could always give Oblivion a go, that will give you some idea of what to expect when GTA 4 hits the PC.

The 7000 era is coming to an end I am afraid, it is time for some tough choices either splurge out on an 8800 card, or go for the 8600 or stick with what you have and put up with low fps rates and wait to see what Nvidia come up with in the 9000 series (those cards are literally going to f**king melt the consoles in performance). To give you an idea of what speeds we are looking at in the 9000 series well the cards should be 2 to 3 times faster than the fastest 8800ultra card currently on the market.

Ok dude, guessing the 9000 series is gonna be ace then biggrin.gif ummm. I have an idea, am gonna leave my 7950 x2 graphics card until nearer to time of GTA 4 or any other ace ganme coming out then I will buy an awesome graphics card.

You're probably right, and I was browsing the net and a GFX Card cought my eyes, 8500GT 512MB with only $120 ... Hopefully the price will drop to $100 so I can get it ... The 8600 GT is to damn expensive for me ... I won't upgrade my PC 'till January 20th 2008 ..

The Big question Vista or XP . C'mon remember the older games , they had a line on the other side of the box : This game is compatible with w 95 , w 98 , w XP and stuff so dont you think that the game will be anounced on both OS'es ? I think so . The more people can play It the more money in the bank smile.gif But hey we still dont know will gta be anounced on PC so dont start spreading rumors wink.gif

^ it could end up depending on microsoft, cause they could work out a deal with R* to make it a vista exclusive, but like you say a pc version hasnt even been announced yet, come on R* to the right thing colgate.gif

Just remember: the word Rockstar, and the words "right thing", rarely appear in the same sentence. The only sentence I can think of which uses those words would be something like...

"It would be good if someone did the right thing, and went and gave the Rockstar executives a good bitch slappin' around to knock the console-whore-ness out of them."

Well if you look at all of the games for windows which are coming out you can still play on them and they were released mainly by microsoft. All it says on the box differently is that is would run better on Vista and the minimum specs for Vista are different so yeah both operating systems but I think it will try and be aimed at Vista but you could still play it on XP. It really depends in a years time where Vista stands with games, if all games are ace on Vista and all new ones cioming on vista then yeah it will be vista only if not it will be for both operating systems.

Ahhh The big Vista or XP debate again,

I wouldn't be supprised if it was Vista only, GTA IV is going to be big no matter what it's played on, yet as well all know and have stated Vista isn't exactly the worlds most loved OS, Instead it has become more of a bragging tool for kiddies.

I'm not going to put it past microsoft to push for a Vista "exclusive".

Last I knew Microsoft were getting killed with Vista, I have tryed it myself since I believe in trying something and not just following the crowd, it is horrible, that many bugs and issues I couldn't even get into my documents.

Only time will tell us, but for the moment, I'm going to guess towards a Vista only, even though the mass market is in XP.

Well dude, I am gonna say this even though you dont agree with Vista. I like Vista and yes it does have some bugs but it runs all my games pretty well.

I dare say that it will be better when they release SP1 and what always happens with new operating systems? Look what happened when XP first came out glitch and bug galore, you just have to give Vista time.

And you rock Reaper, till we talk again friend...

Ah good ole XP vs Vista (maybe we could have a thread like they do with the 360 vs PS3 one) biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif. Regardless of whether people like Vista or not I think we can all agree it has problems. I dunno about anyone else but when I build a PC I want that power going to games not being sucked up by some poncy GUI, but we are not here to talk about that tounge.gif

As to the real issue of whether GTA 4 will be Vista only, at the moment I would say it is looking like it won't be. If we look at Gears of War, the PC version will be XP compatible, plus extra directx 10 effects if you use Vista. I think there is going to be a very long transitiional period for Vista (all assuming it doesn't blow up in MS's face like it should do). We are probably looking at between 12-24 months before we actually see PROPER Vista only games. By proper I mean games that REQUIRE the specialties of Directx 10, rather thatn forced Vista only games like Halo 2 which run quite happily in XP with the odd hack or two.

But no matter, it is encouraging news though that Gears of War is making it's way to the PC makes GTA 4 on the PC more of a realistic possibility.

I have to chime in to say I agree. I've had a Vista computer since February, and have found it to be much smoother to use than XP. I haven't had much trouble with running games and other software; of course, there has been a few incompatibilites, for which I still have the old computer running XP.

But in general, I've found Vista to be much more bugfree than pre-SP2 XP. So far, I haven't encountered bugs more often than on my fully updated XP computer.

I used XP without any patches for 2 years from 2002 to 2004, and I never encountered a single issue that required the installation of SP2. The only reason I ever installed it was so I could install onboard Intel audio drivers on a PC I bought in 2004.

Give vista time is exactly what everyone is doing, I only have issues running some things and GTA: SA just wouldnt run right. I'm also sitting around waiting for the companies to make drivers for all the things in my PC, I went through hell to find drivers for my Wireless router.

A Service pack for Vista will make alot of people move onto it, SP's are alot easyer then updating every 2 days untill they get it right.

I dunno about anyone else but when I build a PC I want that power going to games not being sucked up by some poncy GUI

I agree, the GUI is alright, but then it becomes the average, then anoying untill you get use to it.

Pre-Service Pack 2? alot of games and software (photoshop CS3 for example of software) wont install unless SP2 is installed and my best bet would be GTA IV would be requiring SP2 aswell.

Umm yes the drivers issue. That was a problem but with my sound and video card, the two companies (Nvidia and realtek) had already released the drivers for vista so I was in the all clear for them! The problem with Vista is that SA froze for me once out of several hours game time. Othe than that there are a few problems with other items on vista but everything else will run perfectly ok.

Ok what your saying is true. I dont see what is so special about bringing Halo 2 to the PC, it costs a packet and the game doesnt even look that good anymore due to the fact that it isnt original, we have seen everything in it. I wouldnt pay £39.99 (think that is the price in HMV) for a game which doesnt even look good, would rather wait for Crysis to come out and upgrade my PC for it. biggrin.gif

Anyway guys am gonna start a thread on here for GTA 4, XP or Vista?

Not been much activity in here today, I think the XP vs Vista thread stole all the fanboys biggrin.gif . I just wanted to post something which I think is a bad sign about GTA 4 on the PC. As we know Rockstar released Table Tennis well over a year ago this was another 360 "exclusive" dozingoff.gif . Now personally I couldn't give a rats arse about Table Tennis meself, but everyone was under the impression it was just a tester for Rockstars Next Gen engine.

Well the news today is the Wii is going to get a port of Rockstar Table Tennis. Now ordinarily I wouldn't really be bothered about that, but it is really starting to look like Rockstar are giving PC users the proverbial finger here anuj_cop.gifanuj_cop.gif .

All in all my faith that there will now be a GTA 4 on the PC has been really shaken, I just cannot shake the feeling that Rockstar have become cheap skanky ten dollar console whores and they really don't want anything more to do with the PC. Still I am not going to go and buy one of those crappy toy boxes to play it on though, Rockstar are telling PC users to F**k Off so this is one PC user that will reply to Rockstar with the same message.

hmm...I still believe R* will bring GTA4 to the PC sooner or later. And if they don't,I'm sure not going to be dissapointed. There are so many good games to look forward to that I couldn't care less about GTA4 right now.

I'm more excited about Assasins creed and Crysis to be honest :|

To keep the spirit going, I will post a few thoughts (in point form).

- I've been meaning to abusively-email Rockstar about being taken off their stupid "propaganda" emailing list. They keep sending me all this horse sh*t about new games coming to console and such...I couldn't give a dust mite's ass what multimedia presentations they're pushing to console users. I keep avoiding sending this email, but I will soon.

- The beautiful thing here is: if Rockstar are going to release GTA IV for PC; me abusing the f*ck out of them, will not likely change it. They need to release it because they need the money from the sales. So, like the little bitch-console-whores that they are, they will develop it while many PC gamers are hurling abuse at them for not getting the PC version out on-time, and there's not a damn thing they can do about it.

(I'll throw in a couple of these to symbolize what PC gamers should be doing to the staff at Rockstar)

anuj_cop.gifanuj_cop.gifanuj_cop.gifanuj_cop.gifanuj_cop.gifanuj_cop.gifanuj_cop.gifanuj_cop.gifanuj_cop.gifanuj_cop.gif

- The sad fact for Rockstar is that, when it comes to over-the-shoulder (or not), shooter/driving-games, GTA has always been the award-winner. No game developer seems to be able to match the streamlined game-play, humorous theme, and solid storyline, which exists in every GTA game. Now, take the PC version out of the equation, and the number 1 position will start to fall down, maybe not rapidly, but it will fall. Whichever company wants to pickup where Rockstar left-off (minus the GTA name), can take the lead in this game genre, as PC is still all that really matters. If Rockstar wants to totally steal the game from PC and never give it back...they can, to put it bluntly, go and get f*cked...though...it's nearly literally factual in this case, because Microsoft and Sony have had this really strange, bizarre, sexual relationship with the company since 2001 (Sony), and 2006 (Microsoft). Sick!

- It's funny how all these console-kiddies and fanboys continue to think that their console has some mysterious aura of power surrounding them, power that can "out-perform" the best PCs. It clearly shows the effect (or affect) that a propaganda-filled advertising campaign can have on the minds of the weak. Microsoft and Sony (and even Nintendo, although I cannot say for sure), all had this sudden influx of the term "next generation" into their lexicons, prior to the release of the three recent consoles. I do recall people from Sony saying, back in 2002/2003, that the processor in the PS3 was going to be so many hundred times faster than the fastest desktop computer at the time...well...at the time, the fastest desktop computer, if bought, would still nearly out-perform a PS3 today, so I don't know where this "so many hundred" came from, but it was definitely the (false) point they were trying to get across. The flooding of the gaming news-media, of the term "next generation", and now "next-gen", is becoming pandemic; every Tom, Dick, and Harry seem to think that their game is "next-gen", or that their hardware is "next-gen". Microsoft, Sony, and Rockstar: you three are a bunch of "next-gen" f*ckstickles, and you can stick your "next-gen" right up your asses!

This has been a very violent and cynical post, but it is a necessary evil. We have to be cruel to be kind.

DML, funnily enough, all GTAs since GTA 3 have been improved on the PC, they're best on the PC, hands down. Might you consider that they're not trying to give handjobs to consoles, but instead take their time to develop the PC version, keyboard + mouse > *.

That can be considered, but the only improvement in the PC version is graphics, controls, and the speed at which the game runs. However, the recent behavior of Microsoft (e.g. Peter Moore's bullsh*t-producing mouth), is showing just how much Rockstar has become a sellout to yet another major console manufacturer.

I mean, if they are making the PC version in that 6 months, what do they need to do to actually make it? why does it always take 6 months? and why do they never mention anything regarding the PC version, prior to the console releases? These are all good questions I believe, and the answers to which can only point to one final outcome -- they must be, as you've said, giving handjobs to consoles.

The factors which make the game better on the PC require very little development overhead. The implementation of keyboard & mouse support, if they are so stupid not to already have it in the engine, couldn't take any more than a week. The extra resolution in the textures only means not resizing them down as much from the originals. After these, there isn't much difference; the engine should already be technically able to ran on a Windows PC, after all, it was developed on one. But at the end of the day, we're are talking Rockstar here, and with their shady, shifty history, who knows? they may actually be using Microsoft Visual C++ for XBox 360.

Yes.

Extra £££ for rockstar, and they wouldn't abandon their pc fanbase either.

I want it on PC for the modding too... biggrin.gif

As a side note, Table Tennis coming out on Wii shouldn't be too alarming with respect to R*'s future plans for the PC.

Anything that has to with rackets, or clubs, or swords, or bats, staves, rods, shafts, bars, sticks, etc. has to appear for Wii just so that the gimmicky controller can be "given purpose" and shown off.

(If Wii weren't so family-oriented, you could even say..............better not mention that though.)

Honestly I dont think that they will just do it as a console exclusive. If they do then they are going to lose a lot of fans and I dont think many people would buy any of their games after they pulled a stunt like that. If tehy do it console only I too am gonna say f*ck them. I am not spending more money on a console when the games are sh*t on them. In my opinion they will. But only time will tell, Call of duty 3 was console exclusive and I dont think that went down well, think sales were down too. But now they are bringing Call Of Duty 4 to pc maybe that suggests that they have learnt their lesson? I think so yes and I dont think that Rockstar are going to be prepared to take the same risk.

Now what yu said is quite true. At the end of the day my PC which I bought from PC Specialist with everything (almost) maxed out, best graphics acrd at the time and more. Now I think that my pc can out perform any console out there at the moment. I will be getting new graphics card for GTA 4 when it comes out on pc but considering i bought my pc new in october i dont think it is bad and probably still out performing consoles.

This is a general question for GTA

I just got myself a 22 inch monitor widescreen monitor. I tried loading GTA SA and it doesn't want to load no more. It worked for the 17 inch and 20 inch. Does GTA support all types of monitors or something???? mad.gif

I highly doubt it, m nto really sure though. People have started using widescreens for Battlefield 2 and they were relieved that it worked for them so I am guessing they thought it wouldnt. In your cae as it is a kind of old game it will probably mean that you wont be abel to because o the different resolution settings and the requirement for a 22inch screen would be too much.

I hope GTA4 when it comes out for PC will support WIDESCREEN. Gutted that GTA SA doesn't work with widescreen 22 inch. muppetmaster_karma.gif
