Germany ban Tom Cruise for being a Scientologist

Recommended Posts

Remember This.

Germany has barred the makers of a movie about a plot to kill Adolf Hitler from filming at German military sites because its star Tom Cruise is a Scientologist, the Defense Ministry said on Monday.

Cruise, also one of the film's producers, is a member of the Church of Scientology which the German government does not recognize as a church. Berlin says it masquerades as a religion to make money, a charge Scientology leaders reject.

The U.S. actor has been cast as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, leader of the unsuccessful attempt to assassinate the Nazi dictator in July 1944 with a bomb hidden in a briefcase.

Defense Ministry spokesman Harald Kammerbauer said the film makers "will not be allowed to film at German military sites if Count Stauffenberg is played by Tom Cruise, who has publicly professed to being a member of the Scientology cult."

"In general, the Bundeswehr (German military) has a special interest in the serious and authentic portrayal of the events of July 20, 1944 and Stauffenberg's person," Kammerbauer said.

Cruise's publicists could not be reached for comment.

Stauffenberg had been deeply opposed to the Nazis' treatment of the Jews and planted a briefcase bomb under a table near Hitler in his "Wolf's Lair" headquarters on July 20, 1944. The bomb went off but only wounded the Fuehrer.

The film, slated for a 2008 release and to be directed by Bryan Singer and co-starring Kenneth Branagh, is called "Valkyrie" after Operation Valkyrie, the plot's codename.

The main site of interest would be the "Bendlerblock" memorial inside the Defense Ministry complex in Berlin. This is where Stauffenberg and his co-conspirators hatched the plot and where he and his closest comrades were executed when it failed.

Kammerbauer said the ministry had not yet received official filming requests from the producers of "Valkyrie."

Vanzant originally posted this in the Movies and TV forum, and I for one found it very interesting. Unfortunately so far most of the replies have been along the lines of 'Har har Tom Cruise sucks', so I have posted it here.

I think that Tom Cruise and his movies are not the real issue here. What is the issue is freedom, of expression and beliefs. Surely what the German government are effectively doing is banning a religion? Last time they did that was the 1940's - if you get what I'm saying...

Anyway, discuss. Are the German government right to ban Tom because of his religious beliefs or not?

I don't think banning is really the right word. It's not like they're preventing Cruise or scientologists from being in Germany, they're just not letting him film the movie on government property, from what I understand. There's a big difference between that and outright banning. Though I have no doubt that the media is going to overplay this and compare it to Nazism.

Of course, I don't think the German government is justified in preventing Criuse from filming on the basis of his religion. I think that another possible motivation for doing this may be because Germans probably want to forget WW II for obvious reasons and aren't eager to see the most disgraceful part of their history in the spotlight again. But that's just speculation. Anyway, I don't feel sorry for Cruise, or the scientologist community.

Hehehe...first time I heard about it.

I believe religous discrimination is wrong and a few things in Germany today seem reminiscent of the facist regime. It's not much of a step back. Although they're just restricting him from doing movies in certain areas so it's much to fuss about.

Scientology as a reason for barring Tom Cruise is unnecessary.

Barring Tom Cruise for being Tom Cruise should be reason enough.

Not sure if you noticed, but he's been allowed to act in the movie recently. The production began some days ago in Babelsberg, Potsam. I don't know what made them change their mind though.

...Probably the whole Nazi germany thing. You mention that, and they'll do anything for you.

At a guess, a number with a lot of zeros from the company making the movie.
