It's gonna be somewhat long, word count has to be at least 750 and it has to be at least 4 pages typed on MS Word with size 12 font.

So... not very long at all? tounge.gif

Sounds like an interesting idea. Definitely work something up to post! smile.gif

Shutup, I haven't wrote in months. sad.gif

Obviously the word count's going to be double that, I don't stop until I feel fulfilled.

I finally finished outlining Rough Diamonds. And I added a new character (albeit a shadowy one who's only mentioned and doesn't make any actual appearances) named Fang Xiong. As you know it's a six-part mini-series and is about a trio of South London rentboys, the Triads and pornography. I've gotten some dialogue written down for each 'episode'/chapter, which I've now got titles for: Modus Operandi, Succubi, Dirty Red Things, Playboy, Syndication and Chasing Dragons. ph34r.gif I'm gonna get all the dialogue down throughout the week and get this thing written over the weekend.

Omnia sunt Communia

After playing Mercenaries 2, I've been dabbling with the idea of a Mercenaries style role-play here in Writer's Discussion. It would function similarly to Wanted Assailant's "Letifer Organization" but with a more military based theme, rather than hit men and assassins.

Each member will create a mercenary under the employment of an PMC (Private Military Company). Contracts will be given out by various factions, through the PMC, and mercenaries may accept said contracts in order to receive a cash reward.

Money will be used to buy weapons, vehicles, air strikes, supplies etc. That will help you complete contracts. There will be certain requirements for certain contracts, so you will be forced to spend your money in order to make money.

I will also create a cast of mercenaries to fight alongside the members, these will range from specialists to canon-fodder.

I'm currently sketching up ideas for this, so your opinions will be greatly appreciated. The main problem I'm having at the moment is creating a false conflict for the mercenaries to flourish in, we've already seen North Korea and Venezuela in the video games; so those two are out of the question.

I like military things. Assuming mercenaries kill people, I know I'd be willing to give it a go.

Whatever happened with the Letifer Organization anyway? Is it on some kind of hiatus until the BBcodes are back or is it just in need of a little bumpin'?

That they do! Though it depends on what the contract entails. It could vary from assassinating a high ranking member of a rival faction, to destroying a convoy of munitions being transported from one base to another.

You'll have to ask Wanted Assailant about that, but I think it's just been unactive as of late. You should go there right now and bump it up. wink.gif

The end of Mercenaries 2 set-up an possible sequel set in India, so I doubt I'll use that one. As for the others... I don't know. I'd prefer to create my own conflict, therefore leaving me with complete creative control. Like they did in Mercenaries 2.

The BBCode has made some sort of impact, stopping factual updates on the front due to it containing links. There are still people PMing me about entering, so the topic is left for dead or alive. I consider they'll be a better time to operate, personally. I don't mind at all with the hiatus, as of now.

I've always been facinated with the works military stories a (Although I've never expressed it). You could always go the way of Mercs 2 as you stated, as they made a fictional concerning conflict with Venezuela. You have to pick a decent source to use, with a bit of the, 'made up things why we're here thingemajinges,' for the backstory. Remember, complete creative control makes everything much easier.

I'm 100% sure I'll be using my own, self-designed conflict. It's so much easier. The only problem is, where?

America vs. Insert European Country Here always seems to work. I was thinking of maybe Russia or perhaps somewhere middle Eastern.

I will be including The Americans, in the form of The Allied Nations. Though they will be playing the role of a "peace keeping" faction (as they always are). I want the country that is at war to be pretty bad off, therefore making them rely on the mercenaries help.

Well all of these arn't actual conflicts, different versions have happened in the past but none recently. They are just potential conflicts, just like Venezula

Proves how much I know about about modern conflicts. confused.gif I think out of all those, I prefer the Indonesia/Papa New Guinea Conflict, though I would need to do a little research into that. A Sudanese Civil War also seems inviting, what's the Caspian Conflict though?

The Caucasus Conflict could also be mimicked quite well.

An idea I've got is Cuba. With the Bay of Pigs and the hostility since, that could be a good background for a story. If set in a few years time: something like, since the resignation and subsequent death of Fidel Castro, the nation has been robbed of it's strong figurehead. Seeing an opening, the US government has decided to back a group of Cuban expats in the US and unhappy Cuban citizens to seize power from the unpopular Raul Castro.

There's plenty of opportunities for the overthrow of African dictators too. Mugabe springs to mind, but I'm sure there's plenty more.

I've decided on a fictional Taiwanese Civil War. I haven't finalized the backstory yet, but I've got the general premise down:

A recent event has created a sense of distrust among the people of Taiwan against their Presidential Leader. The people of Taiwan have demanded that he step down and the leader of the rival party take his place. When the Taiwanese President refuses to give up power, a civil war breaks out amongst the conflicting parties.

I've currently got five factions worked out:

  • Taiwanese Army
  • Taiwanese Liberation Front
  • People's Republic Of China
  • Allied Nations
  • Yakuza
Each will have their role to play in the conflict. The PMC will accept contracts from four out of five of these factions (all but The Taiwanese Army).

Wanted Assailant

Sounds awesome. I wonder how would something work out with a tiny country like Andorra. With it being controlled by co-principality (along with the Andorran prime minister); Bishop of Urgell and the President of France, it could always cause accidental tension with a type of fictious incident slipped it there. Maybe I should leave that to myself.

Basically:

The Taiwanese Army are the enemies, Taiwanese Liberation Front being the morally valued heros; China, and the Allied Nations are just possibly what they were in Mercenaries. The Yakuza are basically just a variation of the Russian Mafia?

Pretty much. Yes.

NEWS:

As an Mercenary, you will come under the employment of International Security Organization (ISO). ISO will arrange contracts on behalf of the warring factions for the mercenaries to complete. Once the contract is finalized and the objectives carried out, the ISO will pass on a unclassified percentage of the earnings on to the mercenary.

ISO is an international, privately owned firm who have been involved in conflicts around the world for the past eight years (est. 2002). Their international headquarters are located in Prague, Czech Republic though they will set up field command posts wherever they are needed.

The company has contracts with many US weapons firms, who supply them with firepower at a low price in exchange for their constant custom.

Yakuza? I would have thought it would have been more like the Triads, since they're a bigger organisastion and closer.. across a small channel; The Taiwan Straight.

The Japanese occupied Taiwan up until 1945. As such, there is a large percentage of ethnic Japanese living on the island. Japanese culture is revered highly on the island due to the years of occupation. Don't worry, I do my research. wink.gif

"Can you help me? Give me a minute and I'll change your mind. Give me 10 and I'll change your life."

These words were so much different than the usual business banter heard on Ian's usual university commute. The man who spoke them instantly stood out from the crowd. Even as Ian scurried off to attend a lecture, the man's images and words burned into his forehead like a branding iron.

"How hard is it to want to be in a good mood, and then just... be in a good mood?"

Soon, Ian saw him everywhere, fresh words running circles around Ian. It soon became apparent that this man needed him for whatever reason and he wasn't about to get in the way. What followed was a complicated mass of corruption, theft, robbery and espionage.

Inspired by a real event that happened to me last week, though I didn't take up the man's offer, he looked like he'd stab me without a moment's notice. Still no further development for this, nor have I got a title. If someone with or without Writer's Block wants to use it, let me know and be my guest.

It was actually really strange, it was around 5 PM and I was in no mood to be stopped having just come out. I'd seen him roaming earlier while I was having my cigarette and he made a bunch of girls run off screaming. I always get the weirdos talking to me so sure enough he came up to me on the way home and went "I wonder if you could help me...", so I thought if he's in genuine distress I'll help. Turned out he just wanted to talk about QI and spoke about a siege against the Manchester BBC building which is just across the road from my university. Bless the bloke, he was a few fries short of a Happy Meal but it got me thinking of everything he could have wanted.

In a similar "weird-guy-talked-to-me" vein: I was on my way along the coast yesterday morning and some drunken guy with a few teeth missing started speaking, here's our conversation...

Him: Morning.

Me: Alright? (Sorta slowed walking pace and being polite.)

Him: *Incoherent* I hope you win the Lottery!

So I flashed him the double thumbs-up and continued on my way. I put the Lottery on tonight too.
