    • Open. I'd like to be able to go anywhere from the start.

    • Closed. I prefer playing through one section at a time.

I suppose it's worth slapping a poll on this topic since this question hasn't come up in a long time.

I'll have to say it doesn't matter. I guess it was always kinda cool to unlock a new section in the past round of GTAs, but I could see how it might be necessary to leave it all open if the gameplay and story need it to be open to work.

hey! who told you to make it a "poll"!!

biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif just kidding............ good idea

Closed, I like unlocking stuff. I'd like it to stay like in SA though, where you can enter the other parts of the map, but you'll get cops (or alternatively some hit men or something similar) after you. I guess it's rather unrealistic, but how can you not love exploring while being chased...!

i like the idea of accomplishing or having to do something before new areas are open. in my case it's like - if everything is open, i can't help myself, i race thru the game without actually enjoying it. since i'm unable to slow myself down, i need r* to do it for me.

Closed. I like the rewarding feeling you get each time you unlock an area. Also the game dosen't seem overwhelming when you first start because your limited to just one area and as a result you actually get to really learn that area before moving on as opposed to the game sending you to areas all over the map from the start.

Definetly closed. Like many of you have mentioned, it's almost like a reward to go to another area after a lot of missions of you wondering "Oh my god, this could be it, I might get to go to that place just across the water".

I think that Niko's gonna start off in Broker (specifically Hove Beach) and then eventually end up in Alderney. Not only that, but you guys have to remember that R* has never done five different sections before, so some of the area-blocking stories may get old, fast.

I think that Niko's not going to be able to go to certain areas because of his status as an immigrant, and the whole terrorist thing. He would get off and have to stay with relatives (Roman) until he gains access to other parts of the city, ending up able to go to another state (Alderney). Being R*, they would really kick up the "protection against terrorists, Patriot Act" thing a notch, spoofing it in a way.

Another way is to cut off the boroughs by other means. Maybe the only way to get to Dukes is the train, maybe Algonquin by the bridge, perhaps Alderney by ferry.

Topic rated good icon14.gif. It started a good discussion.

Open. If you want to only explore one area at a time do it, but leave the rest of the city for the rest of us to explore. In keeping with R*'s "naturalistic" theme, it seems gimmicky (and outdone) that all the boroughs would be quarantined from each other. When an immigrant comes to the country, they don't keep them locked in a small area of a city, they hand them papers and a green card and send them off.

Ill say closed because what always got me through a hard mission sometimes was that I new if I beat it there would be more islamds unlocked and it shows that I worked for somthing. If the map was already unlocked then it would be boaring because you wouldnt have anything to look forward to during missions.

Yes, i will vote closed as wel. It also allows for getting to know the city alot easier and remembering what roads go where.

Doesn't matter to me, but I imagine Rockstasr will have a system that doesn't actually block you out from the environment, but possibly things will dicsourage you from entering them. Things like enemy gang presence, intensified cop heat, and shady neighborhoods come to mind.

But for sure I'm going to take everything in slowly regardless, block by block.

Yes - discourage me, don't prevent me.

Closed is the way to go.

Hopefully Rockstar sees it that way. It seems this decision will be made when the game testers finally get there hands on GTA4.

The majority o people on this topic are saying closed so lets hope the game testers are normal "gamers" and see it that way too.

Blind Joe Death
Closed for sure. Mainly because I am use too that and it gives me something too play for. It also makes me explore the current island/borough that I am at. Like for example if the map was open I would go too the coolest place and hang their but if it is closed I will explore the place I am at too every last pavement and then when the next area is open I will know the last are off by heart and then I will come too this new place which I will explore my nutter off like as if I just got GTA IV for the first time again.

Id like it to be closed, But only for Niko because he is an immigrant and was smuggled into the country, There could be checkpoints where they search your car before you can cross to the other parts of the city because the government is trying to deport you. And for whatever reasons you can't pass into other areas until you pass a certain stage in the game like other GTAs.

Closed. I mean, if it were open, there would be alot of exploring to do, but come on. That would get boring fast. When it's closed you feel like you've unlocked something special.

Look at spiderman. You could go anywhere from the start. It got boring real fast, didn't it?

  • 3 weeks later...

@krama: Yet, the question is 'What do you prefer?'

@on-topic: Honestly, I voted for 'Doesn't Matter'. If I had to choose, I'd choose Closed, simply because (like many others) I love the feeling when I realise I've unlocked something. It's like playing a completely new game.

And, considering the fact that each area in San Andreas featured a full 'city', you can imagine how jiggly I was!

I'm gonna take it slowly, ped by ped, block by block, car by car, road by road, etc.

Also, don't forget, there are street names in Liberty City! While we're learning our way around, we can also learn by using street names, which will help a lot.

The map should definately be closed, one of the great feelings of accomplishment you get when you play the game is when you unblock a new area, if it were to be open, then such an accomplishment wouldn't be possible.

Im sure Rockstar are creative enough to think of a suitable realistic reason to why there are blocked areas.
