Wiping HDD

I just got a used HDD from one of my friends, 40GB. I'm probably not going to use it for much, but I would like to know what free programs I could use to wipe this HDD while leaving my other intact. I tried "[email protected] Kill Disk Hard Drive Eraser", but I needed a floppy drive for it and never got past the opening screen. If I could find other programs I would try them, but I also don't want to delete my C: drive in the process.

Are you wanting to erase the data, or format the drive?

The difference is that formatting it will simply rewrite over the existing data, making it possible for an OS to write to the files.

Erasing actually reverts those parts of the hard-drive back to their original form. I'll assume you mean erase, since formatting a drive is remarkably simple ( format driveleter: in dos).

A nice program you might try is Eraser. By default it uses 7 pass rewrite, but you can configure it to go up to 35 passes. The nice thing about it is it is a Windows app, so you can just open up the hard-drive in explorer or something, select all the files and right click erase to do it within Windows. That's the only application I could think of that you wouldn't have to boot up off a bootable medium to use.

Darik's Boot and Nuke

SecureErase

SecureErase uses the ATA internal secure erase utility, which is apparently much faster than just erasing it normally.

1. Kill Disk has a CD ISO you can download and burn and then boot from to do the job

2. There is also a Windows version that you can use

3. Ultimate Boot CD has Kill Disk built in, plus a bunch of other free programs

4. The maker of the drive should have some free software you can download that can do the job.

XP's Disk Management should be more than enough if you're going to writing over it anyway with your own data. If you were going to be selling this drive, then using something like Kill Disk would be a good idea.

Holy cow, Wolf, that CD would have been a Godsend in so many different occasions. Truly one of the more awesome things I've seen in a long time.
