Demarest
I'm sure this has been asked a million times. Search is stuffed, so sorry. I can make an animated avatar out of MPEG-1's because TMPGEnc has a frame dumping option. My understanding is that WMV is more of a streaming format, eh? Either way, TMPGEnc (as the name implies) only deals with MPEG's. So either I'd like to figure out how to frame dump from a WMV or convert it to TMPGEnc. I realize converting it will harm the quality; For this project, that might actually be a bonus. But either way to arrive at my goal will suffice. Thank you for your time. Help me and your reward will be my next animated avatar eye candy made possible by YOU
dertyjerzian
It's worth it to convert it imo, I mean: WMVs are a streaming format for larger video encoding formats, but only in the same way that WMA is a streaming format for WAVs. The quality has come so far and become so efficient that it's possible to drop even a video's size immensely and get a great result that comes in a very small, portable, network friendly package. But in terms of converting to MPEG layer 1, if your program can do it in a lossless manner, then by all means, right? Like, converting that WMV is really only going to make a larger, more complex to process file to use a your building block if it is done in a lossless converter. sh*t, remember when wmv was teh pain? Blotchy, long buffers, etc etc. It's come a long way. It should upconvert to a local storage format nicely, again given the right converter I really cant recommend any that I'm still familiar enough with, but my friend is teh movie guy and I'll ask him about the ones he uses if you havent found one soon
Demarest
Well as stated above, loss isn't an issue. I plan on taking a portion of a video that is already of decent resolution and shrink it down to frames of an animated avatar. As you know, shrinking it down will swallow a good number of quality issues. Likewise, the size of the project is irrelevant simply because it's just a couple second clip that will be converted to a GIF of a couple hundred K, if that. dertyjerzian
right, i meant for your base files before the shrinkage How did it work out? Solution?
gillies
If you are using a non-ancient version of Windows then you can use Windows Movie Maker to convert it to an AVI then it looks like you can use this TMPGEnc program to convert that to MPEG-
facugaich
Use the RAD video tools. You can convert from almost any format to AVI, GIF sequence, BMP sequence, etc, as well as scale and crop the video. The interface can be a little complex though.
