Here this -> this is all I am going to say: "Deleting the [.set] and uninstalling/reinstalling the game can perform miracles!"

Read this as well in the bugfix list... (did you read it?)

Problem #21:

During gameplay, the sky constantly flickers and the menu appears messy with horizontal and vertical lines as well as annoying character maps.

Solution: Update your video drivers. Yes, this is stated in the above introduction, but is particularly relevant with this problem. You do not require the 1.1 patch. This has been since outdated by updated video card drivers, and installing it will achieve nothing.

Alternatively: Toggle the frame limiter (if it's off, turn it on, and if it's on, turn it off). This is achieved by going to the pause menu -> Display Setup -> Frame Limiter. Also, have a fiddle with the draw distance settings.

Alternatively: Experiment with different resolutions in display setup, and a different colour quality (16/32 bit)

Alternatively: Set the compatibility mode of the executable file to 'Windows 98'. Do so by: right-clicking gta-vc.exe (default: C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto Vice City\gta-vc.exe) -> Properties -> Compatibility tab -> check 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:', and select 'Windows 98 / Windows Me' from the drop-down menu. Apply, OK. And as pictures speak a thousand words, click here.

Alternatively: Buy an ATi Radeon discrete solution (R500-R600) and avoid nVIDIA 8800GTS/GTX or any of their related card(s). Also, don't use IGP chipsets such as Intel GMA as their graphical rendering performance is abysmal, except for the upcoming Radeon Xpress 1250 integrated which is based on an X700.

Alternatively: For nVIDIA cards, go into the Forceware Control Panel and set every DirectX/3D settings to be "Application" as well as "High Performance". For ATi cards, go into the Catalyst Control Centre and set every DirectX/3D settings to be "Application Preference" as well as "High Performance". You might want to play around with the VSync and the Refresh Rate as well, in addition to things like Double/Triple Buffering and Bilinear/Trilinear Filtering. Note: If your graphics card driver doesn't come with a display companion, check these settings in 'dxdiag.exe' (Display tab) or 'Display Properties' in the Control Panel. Also, some of the newer Radeon HD cards and the GeForce 8 series such as the infamous GeForce 8800GTS normally have advanced settings which affects older games. You should keep in mind that you might need to disable those features.

Advice: Uninstall older drivers before installing newer ones. It just might cause conflict with the older driver and then the graphics hardware renders horrendous graphics referred to as "sky flickering". So for example if you had a Radeon and you upgraded it to a GeForce 8 card, uninstall the driver for the Radeon before installing the newest drivers for the GeForce 8. Naturally, in such a scenario, the SET file should also be deleted.

The three very important things to note are compatibility mode, the updating of drivers, and the [.set] file especially when you are using an operating system such as Windows Vista, which Vice City does not support.

Oh, BTW, your system specs? confused.gif I saw these same screenshots of weird character map effects before, so tell me it and I'll look up for some drivers as usual. Many many problems had been fixed like this, and I can freely look up for a thread that was solved already dealing with the same problem.

http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=270679

Here's a thread for you. This guy has Windows Vista Ultimate! Now imagine that? Try scrolling down a little further, and you'll see where his problem was solved. If somehow it doesn't work for you, then the best thing to do is contact T2 Games Support. sigh.gif

Yeah, you really need to update your graphics drivers to a Windows Vista-compatible one (so don't end up downloading the wrong one for OS's like XP/ME/98. sarcasm.gif)

Here's a good example of what will happen if you don't update your drivers.

(Remember: If you need any help finding the correct drivers, reply ASAP.)

That would be my advice.

I'll also stress that VC isn't necessarily supported for the Vista operating system. While compatibility mode exists (and would be a good idea), it may not be a dead certain work around.

Wrong answer. Video drivers is the correct answer as this is a VERY old problem. Unless he says that he installed it on Vista, it worked, he upgraded his graphics card, and now it doesn't work, you had no business pointing to the SET file or a reinstall. As per usual, make the prognosis match the symptoms.

I got that quote from the pinned bugfix list. It applies to every single situation! tounge.gif My first priority was the video drivers of course.

No it doesn't. If you don't understand that file, don't run to it like you do.

Trust me, I know what it does.

If one thing says one thing and another says another, how do you know which is right? You use your brain and think it through. Don't believe everything you read.

I understand, I understand, I understand. Fine then, just pretend that what I said above is about the drivers and nothing else. I use the [.set] as a start to my other advices that I have in mind.

Now then, explain to us how/why deleting the SET file would at all address his issue?

Well, he does have a graphical corruption problem, and it could have been the same issue like what you just mentioned about the [.set] file. But this doesn't mean what I am saying will definitely solve the problem. As I said before, it's probably his drivers and so you may ignore me on that other comment. turn.gif

No it doesn't. If you don't understand that file, don't run to it like you do. Unless the person chooses a resolution their monitor doesn't support or alters their hardware from whatever it was when the game was first installed, deleting the SET file does NOTHING except make the person engage in one more USELESS step and have to go through re-setting up their preferences.

It's only in there as a necessity because so many morons fail to delete it even if it does apply to their problem. Not the greatest solution, admittedly, but it's done the job for the most part.

If it's in the bug list, there's no need to post it here. Assume the user has read the list - if they haven't, they hardly deserve to be waited on hand and foot.

I shouldn't have recommended [.set] file anyway seeing as though he's using Vista, and probably had to install Vice City freshly all over again. It's a driver problem then I admit. alien.gif

Joselo2NR: Is your graphic problem fixed now because you haven't been active in this thread, or do you still need some help because it is...well...not fixed?

Similar problems here. Just upgraded to Vista Ultimate, installed GTA VC first and the game wont start (not happy at all).

The only way i have got the game to work so far is to run in win98 compatibility mode but the graphics level is very bad, also i cant see my previous saved games (Vista problem??)

Got the latest video drivers for Vista from nvidia's website. game apperance still very poor. Need help to get our favourite working properly again or i just wasted good money on Microsoft!!!!

PC spec;

Intel Celeron CPU 3.06GHz

1024 MB ram

N7600 Graphics 256MB

74GB SATA HD

Send us a screenshot of the main menus and during gameplay so that we can possibly check to see if it matches the many screenshots of graphical corruption fixed on people running Vice on WinVi Ultimate.

What do you mean by the appearance is poor? VC only looks one way.

Saves go in My Documents. If your OS doesn't have that element, the game will store them in its own data folder. This could explain old saves not showing up.

Also, if you post your email address, internet bots will just grab it and spam you. There's no purpose for it because if you ask here, you can make an effort to visit again to see the answers you receive.

Sorry i'm new to this forum thing in general and didn't see the hide email at first.

Graphics are poor! well go back a few decades to the old spectrum style graphics and thats what i mean. i might as well have a pc that only just makes the min spec not one that exceeds the recommended spec's.

The graphic problems i have are where the textures are not always pinned to their locations and spill all over the screen, like wall corners that move when you turn, tommy is see-through down one side, looks like most charaters have a huge blob of chewing gum stretching between their hands.

Either way i tried all the usual things - drivers (using Vista Ultimate built-in, downloading Vista version dirvers from GPU manufactures website and even the XP drivers, always get the same problems including uninstalling the game and deleting the folders. i have reverted back to XP for now and will try the vista on a new PC. BTW the Vista install was a complete fresh install right from formatting HD.

I read about Vista and it uses a virtualization mode for most 'compatibility mode run' applications so that is where i think the save games are - need to find this location.

Cheers.

Please send to us a screenshot of what you're talking about so I can recommend you to delete the [.set] file which might not work for your sake. I'll start offering suggestions only after I see how exactly Vice City's main menu screens and it's entire scenery looks like.

BTW, if updating your graphics drivers doesn't work - then this is the time to download + install Patch 1.1 for Vice City. If graphics driver installation doesn't work, then Patch 1.1 will try and forcefully fix your graphics problem I suppose.

Thanks i will post a screenshot as soon as i re-install vista. This time i'm thinking of doing an up-grade to vista from XP not a clean install - that way i should know better if it changes drivers. Should be done in about a week or so.

I will try the 1.1 patch if it doesn't work and let you know, thanks for you advice so far it is nice to know there are people out there who can and will help smile.gif

No the Patch will not fix the graphics problem, it's obsolete.

@gbunch: Microsoft should not even offer OS upgrade options. They're nothing but problems. Fresh install is always better.

And like Vinnie said, the VC patch is obsolete. ROF has been told this several times, so be sure to smack him one time for telling you to do something he knows will have no effect.

Do not, I repeat, do not get Windows Vista if you don't need to. My girlfriend and I bought an Athlon 64 rig with Vista installed when it was brand new. And five months later it still sucks ass. We want to uninstall it and put XP on there.

I did pick up Vice for PC, so maybe then I will actually get to play it.

i have now got my PC as dual boot (XP/Vista Ultimate) and for now only play VC in XP - so much easier. i will eventually get VC to work in vista but it's not a priorty now. Thanks to all of you for advice, when i get it to work normally i will let you all know what i did including all advice that made it work for me.

Second PC i tried it on was a recovered server - Xeon Dual core 2.8GHz, 3GB Ram Matrox video card. Worked fine with XP didn't bother with Vista, hence the reason i reverted my other PC back to XP, it looks/feels nice and WORKS!!

Now to finish the game and get my frst 100% recorded - keep getting sidetracked by just being able drive around and pisck up money by all means....... smile.gif

This is the best game so far.

As you can now see the characters appear to be missing parts and the scenery dosen't stay where it's meant to be. these pics are with vista built drivers for my Asus N7600 video, but its the same with nvidia's drivers. i am next going to try the nvidia drivers and delete the .set file this time (now that i know about this)

No system specs = No further help

But I think you'd benefit if you uninstall Vice City in Add/Remove Programs, delete C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Vice City, and then reinstall fully.

Hmm... secenry doesn't stay the same way? Reminds me of this glitch:

1. Type [thugstools] cheatcode,

2. Press F1.

3. Press it again.

Sys spec =

Intel Celeron D 3.06GHz

MSI motherboard 661FM3-V

Asus N7600GS AGP8X 256MB HDTV DVI

1.0 GB RAM

120 GB IDE HD (Vista OS install)

80 GB SATAII HD (XP OS install)

750 GB SATAII HD

Does that help?

oh no cheat codes have been used in those pics. install vista - install VC - play. thats it and the graphics are as the pics and the one show.

Is this a driver or driver/OS issue?

Please do this: But I think you'd benefit if you uninstall Vice City in Add/Remove Programs, delete C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Vice City, and then reinstall fully.

Once having done that, it might be that Windows Vista is blocking some graphics/texture files for Vice City. Try to make sure the "read-only" is unchecked for each and every VC main files & folder (just make changes to Vice City folder and it'll do it to the subfolders). Now make sure to set the [.exe] in Windows XP/98 compatibility mode, and ensure to "Run as Administrator".

And try the 1.1 Patch! People think it's "obsolete", but it's not. The patch is still on the T2 Support website for a reason, otherwise they would just delete it and dump the link. Even people here recommending Patch 1.1 -> http://forums.phoenixlabs.org/showthread.php?t=14419

So here's Vice City v1.1: http://www.rockstargames.com/support/req_s...tar_Games,gtavc

Here's somebody who got VC to work with Vista: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3Ol_kRewkA

Here's somebody who have graphics problem : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tl3M9-ds_bY

Is this a driver or driver/OS issue?

It's just you?

Thanks, i will un-install - delete folders and re-install tonight when i get home. If it dosen't work next is the v1.1 patch after that i will just stick to XP for VC gameplay as i have the option.

Also will use graphics manufacturers drivers for vista - that should help anyway.

let you know later if it works.

Thanks again.

Great site this very helpfull and the people biggrin.gif Thanks

You guys if you keep this up, will never ever install Vista. I can't wait till Microosft cancel support for Windows XP updates on the Windows Update website - you all will be running back to Vista. Trust the damn operating system! - it is a better OS than XP and has more features. Plus, motherboard component drivers will be more focused on Vista if your entire computer system especially was meant to be run on Vista.

I pretty sure when Windows XP first came out, you were all wanting to keep 98 - but then you finally decided to keep XP? tounge.gif

A good idea is to partition the hard drive and install Windows XP on the 2nd partition. Now just dual-boot into Windows XP. Or you can install a secondary hard drive and setup XP on it too. Let Vista have the primary hard drive...

I dumped 98/98SE/Me/2K as soon as got a copy of XP as it was the better OS with more features and more secure.

I still intend to get VC working normally on vista but until i do XP is still the best option, I have dual boot on seperate drives so i can still play VC until i sort the problem in vista (BTW its Vista Ultimate if it makes a difference)

as i said i am going to have another go tonight so will let you (all) know later/tomorow if i get it working 100%

BTW I like the way vista looks and works - it is more secure i agree and better protected, still have to check my other games as well..........
