Toni.Cipriani
Operating System (OS): Windows XP Amount of RAM: 512 MB Internet connection type: Broadband Video Card: 128MB Geforce Motherboard (mobo): ASUS (I think) dunno what type. Processor (CPU): Pentium Dual Core 3.2 GHZ Sound Card: No idea. Well, in my wild guess, this is a problem in my registry. I try opening several programs that come with windows: MS Paint, Word Pad, Disfragmentation of Disk, amongst some other Windows based programs and they all feature a pop up that says this: "It was not possible to locate the procedure entry point wcsncpy_s in the dinamic vincule library msvcrt.dll." What should I do in these cases? I ran a registry clean-up program on my pc, ran my anti-virus, and still, nothing. I guessed msvcrt.dll was corrupt, so I tried replacing it, but still saving a back up of it. Even so. Help!
Crokey
Try this out MS Site If that is what you've done anyway, then my next question is how long has this been happening if it is fairly recent then have you installed or uninstalled anything recently. If it has been within the past few days then the best option is run a system restore from before this happening.
Toni.Cipriani
Well, for starters, I bought this computer in March from a dude that builds computers, about 3 miles from here. Well. I don't know, but he didn't gave me a copy of Windows XP CD. I dont know if that's illegal or what. So I couldn't do that thing listed on the site. Second, I did that system recovery, but it did not work. I choose my latest dates, and all of the dates since March 8th (the day I allegedly received my PC). But nothing. I'd have to reinstall Windows XP? I've been hearing that Windows 2003 server would have a kick ass performance in a computer like mine. Coudl be true? Oh, and thanks, by the way. Toni.Cipriani
Sorry for double posting, but could someone help me here? This registry error is driving me nuts. I have things to do on the programs tha were affected with this. Thanks very much, Croke, and others who would be willing.
Crokey
N'kay, I've done a little searching about and I've found what could be a slight work around for your problem, it's not a permanant fix (as in it doesn't solve the source of the problem entirely but it does fix it). This hopefully might work for you and won't or shouldn't cause any problems. Get a fresh version of the msvcrt.dll file and copy it into the c:\windows\system32\ directory, if the file already exists then backup the old one and put the new one in, then create a new file in the same directory (which is where the .exe for Paint is) called mspaint.exe.local then load up Paint as usual and report back if that works, if not try this before you report back, create the file and call it msvcrt.dll .local with the space after .dll, if that doesn't work then report back. First problem: I downloaded the msvcrt.dll from dll-files.com. But I couldn't delete my original one because it was not accepted to do so. So I wanted to know how am I going to make these .local files?
Crokey
Right Click > New > Text Document > name the file mspaint.exe.local Make sure that you have extensions available to view, which it looks like you should do if you can see the .dll files. I can't see the .dll files. Which extension would I have to download?
Crokey
Open up Explorer, and click on Tools > Folder Options Then click the View tab, then scroll down to 'Hide Extensions for known file types' uncheck the box, then click OK. It will now show file extensions within explorer like .exe, .dll, .jpg etc etc etc So you should be able to see the msvcrt.dll file, within C:\Windows\system32\ If it isn't there then put in a new one, if it is then leave it there. Now within the same folder Right Click > New > Text Document > rename it to mspaint.exe.local Ignore the message you might get telling you that the file type is not correct, so click 'Yes' Then load up paint to see if it works. If it doesn't then delete the file 'mspaint.exe.local' then rename the file 'mspaint.exe' to 'mspaint.exe.local'. Again ignore the message and click 'Yes'. This will now create a new 'mspaint.exe' file, now load up Paint as usual and it should work. If that works for you, then proceed to create a new file for each program affected with the same '.exe.local' extension
Toni.Cipriani
Alright. Here's what's what. I already had a mspaint.exe.local, so I deleted it, and made another. Didnt work Did all those procedures to view .exe, .dll, etc files. I did everything. Changed mspaint.exe to mspaint.exe.local. It didnt work so I wanted to change it back. It didn't allow. Tried renaming mspaint.exe.local to mspaint.exe to see if it would work, and still. Didn't get any good results. Might as well have to reinstall windows. windows didn't let me replace msvcrt.dll with another file, and the problem is within the registry. Problem is, going to lose all the files i have on this hard drive (or am I? I mean, I could reinstall windows and keep these current files still on the pc?) and that would be a wreck. I'm going to call a friend of mine who's a computer technician and maybe he could do something that we can't do over the net. Gareth, really really appreciate your interest into helping me out man. Thanks. But there's no other alternative, I guess. Is there?
