GTA:SA freezes when I load/start game

Recommended Posts

I'm having problems starting a new game and when I load saved games. I get the intro and the title screen but, when I go to Start New Game, it freezes and does nothing. This also happens when I try loading a saved game as well. It'll freeze and when I go to the windows task manager, it says that gta_sa.exe is "not responding".

Things that I've tried:

-reinstalling(clean install, no mods or anything else),

-updating my gfx card driver,

-updating my sound card driver,

-updating my DVD-RW drive firmware,

-reinstalling directx 9.0c

None of these have worked so far. My system specs:

Windows Vista home basic,

2.0GHZ AMD Turion64,

ATI Radeon Xpress 1100

1gb DDR2 ram

And I have GTA:SA Second Edition(2.00)

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for the replies! When I originally posted this, I was unaware that Vista has DirectX 10. I tried to install 9.0C but, I guess you can't downgrade any DX version. Everyone on other forums tell me that the game wont run at all on DirectX 10 and that it will only work with version 9. Is this true? Will GTA:SA only work with DX9?

It works properly for me, I played it quite a bit last week and I think it might crash a little more often than it did in windows xp but it was always a bit unstable.

It should work without changing the directx installation, but if you need to you can install the the directx redist in vista.

There never will be any official support because take2 and rockstar are pretty traditional for game companies and any kind of long term support is non existent. However san andreas (and vice city, which seems to be more stable than san andreas) gets an icon in the games explorer in vista, and that is downloaded from a microsoft server which should be an indication that it has been tested to some extent.
