blentz
Every time I try to start GTA: SA, it crashes with the following error just before it should be giving me a menu: gta_sa.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You need to restart the program. An error log is being created. I am running: - Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 - Athlon Thunderbird 1.0GHz - PNY GeForce 6600 AGP, 256MB - 256MB DDR RAM - SB Live! PCI I have tried: - Updating DirectX 9.0c + dxwebsetup SDK Updates - Running GeForce drivers from -- the base CD (old) -- the links provided on this board for 71.89 (less old) -- the latest release from nVidia's site 93.71 (current) - Lowering my audio acceleration to "emulation" - Updating to GTA SA 1.01 - this failed and refused to update my executable - Uninstalling/Reinstalling GTA: SA - Updating my DVD drive's firmware - Updating my SB drivers off Creative's site (latest version) - Deleting the GTA San Andreas User Files folder altogether I had GTA: SA working once, with 3d Analyzer and my Voodoo 5500 AGP card. Needless to say, it ran like crap, but it did run - it didn't crash. I don't know why I can't get updated to SA 1.01. I have a retail DVD, and am downloading the update file from http://www.nomorehotcoffee.com/ I get: "Old file not found, however, a file of the same name was found. No update done since the contents do not match." WTF? Is this the buggiest piece of software you've ever seen? Did the programmers at R* go to the Microsoft School of Programming and End User Aggravation? More importantly, does anyone have tips for resolving my problem that don't involve repeating the same things I've already tried? R* support is telling me to "disable my virus scanner and reinstall", so I'm pretty much giving up on them. Thanks in advance. Community-based support is always the best, so I'm hopeful one of you gurus out there knows what I'm doing wrong. gillies
If the patch won't install you most likely have version 2 of the game, it will say version 2.00 in the lower right corner of the main menu if you have version 2. Have you installed chipset drivers? Did you try running the game as the administrator? (if Windows 2000 has the right-click/run as thing that Windows xp does). The thing crashes before I can get to the menu to verify the version... but I can tell you that the cover of the retail box says "SECOND EDITION" at the bottom. I haven't installed any chipset drivers. I have a ASUS A7A266 motherboard with an ALi M1647 and an ALi M1535d+ PCIset. I'll go hunting for updates for the chipset later today. I am logged into Windows with an administrator account. Or are you saying I have to run the thing as "Administrator" itself? blentz
I just searched ASUS's site, and applied the latest update for the AGP chipset. I didn't see any other chipset updates out there. I rebooted, logged in to my system as THE honest-to-god Administrator account (fresh, empty, user profile, too), and sure enough, it crashes at the exact same spot. blentz
Oh yeah. I forgot to mention that GTA3 and GTA: VC work flawlessly on this system. It's just GTA: SA that craps itself whenever I try to run it. gillies
Have you installed the newest bios for that motherboard? This is a pretty unlikely fix that may not be relevant if you already installed it, but you are running out of options. The computer is the absolute minimum for this game except the video card so getting Vice City and GTAIII to work doesn't mean a lot - their requirements are about half those of San Andreas for most things. Being at the minimum requirements means that it should work, but if it doesn't it probably is pointing to some problem with resources. I don't think I have ever recommended this to anyone but you could try disabling a whole lot of background programs. Like the virus scanner. blentz
For what it's worth, I've got it working now. I had installed GTA: SA on one of my secondary hard drives to save space on the drive with my operating system on it. Oddly enough, it was also the secondary drive I had transplanted my swap file/virtual memory file to. I believe when I started up the game, the drive exhausted it's space and refused to run, choking either the available virtual memory or the amount of space that GTA: SA needs on the drive it's installed to (although my %TEMP% location had plenty of free space when I was having it crash and when I got it working). Moving the GTA: SA installation to a third drive, with plenty of free space, seems to have solved the problem. This probably doesn't effect all you people out there with decent computers and gobs of physical memory, since you're not swapping like me. I will say, though, that the game runs quite well for a 1GHz/256MB/Ge6. Load times really aren't that bad (my disks are on a ATA150/SATA card), and the game performance is up to par. The graphics settings are default (mid-range draw distance, etc.) and I'm running in 1024x768x32. vicecitylover400
I Had this Problem, I had a copy from Jordan, When The Man Copied it he rushed and lost some files, then we came back to America and, MISING FILE, during setup. Did anything come up during setup if so just go buy the actual copy at your retailer, prefered Target, or Amazon. blentz
Also for what it's worth, I was instructed by R* to: 0. Uninstall GTA: SA completely, removing the Program Files\R*\GTA: SA folder 1. Copy the entire installation DVD to my C:\ 2. Reboot into Safe Mode, login as an Administrator 3. Install from the installation DVD copy in C:\ 4. Reboot into normal mode 5. Run the game. Can you try that? It sounds ridiculous.
