AUDIO PROBLEM

Recommended Posts

I_Pfreely

On my Vice City PC, when I enter a mission there seems to be no talking, dialogue or subtittles appearing. Only after the cut scene the character talks a bit. Is it only at the beginning of the game? Or is my Vice broke?

I don't think you read the thread. The most important things to know here are whether or not this is your first time playing, did it work before, etc.

How do you know that that ain't normal? Sometimes you can't expect to hear talking in Vice City all the time, it's not a TV show or commercial. These sound effects happen at random intervals when you do certain things to pedestrians, etc.

If you can give me your sound card info, you probably may need to update the drivers and try using Windows 98 compatibility mode if necessary. In the mean time, go into all the setups and hit on "Restore Defaults". Now just max out the SFX volume and the music volume in "Audio Setup". I don't know what "Dynamic Acoustic Modeling" does, but makes sure it's on/off depending on what it is currently set to. In "Display Setup", there's a substitles configuration - I think you would benefit from turning it on

Uninstall/Reinstall the game as usual.

Go to Start -> Run -> 'dxdiag.exe' for the sound card/DirectX info next time; you still need to make sure you update the drivers though. And I have no idea what your problem is really. As long as you hear people talk through their mouths in the cutscenes (sometimes in Vice City), then there's certainly no problem at all... unless you have a bad speaker set that doesn't allow loud volumes.

You're right, I've just reinstalled my windows got all programs removed, so sound card might be not as to date. Where do you upgrade it?

If you don't have the drivers that came with it, you will need to visit the manufacturer's website to get the latest drivers.

All the info I need is in dxdiag's sound tab as I had said before. There is another way of solving the problem by using emulation mode in dxdiag, and then configuring this setup in Vice City as well (I think). But updating the drivers is easy and is the best way to go about solving the problem

If you can upload a movie w/sound about what you are talking about, that'd be great! Do you mean audio crackles coming from their mouths?

I'm not sure what u mean but i think ur relating to VC characters, they dont talk during cut scenes. Other than that i can hear cars explode in game play ect.

You still haven't given the sound card info as yet... I don't really have much to say until you at least confirm to this post.

Try deleting the [.set] file and running the game without Windows 98/Me compatibility mode turned on (Windows XP). Basicallly, ff compatibility mode was on, turn it off... if it was off, turn it on. Also I had a hard time finding proper drivers for your sound card, it didn't come with a model number? I recommend using emulation mode for your sound card -> see screenshot below. The best thing to do is to buy a cheap Sound Blaster Audigy card and get updated drivers for it; the main problem here was that your onboard sound card isn't as good as Realtek's AC'97 which always carries updated drivers.

Thanks to MoWGLi for this pic!

Change your hardware sound acceleration to a different setting. This is achieved through: Start -> Run -> dxdiag, clicking the Sound tab and moving the Hardware Sound Acceleration Level slider to a different position; or by going to Advanced Speaker Settings through Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices. Note: Make sure to set the acceleration level to something lower than 'Full', as in Emulation (None) modes etc. And also make sure to do this in Audio Setup for Vice City as well! Experiment with different audio hardware settings!

In that case, buy the game. Admitting you can't play the radio stations is as much admitting to warez as is explicitly stating the fact that you downloaded the game.

I'll leave this open for the time being - I'd like to see a response.

Is your computer a desktop or a laptop? Also, what computer brand/manufacturer made it? If you download CPU-Z and send us a log, we'll know where to go next (this information can also be gotten from a "dxdiag" or "System Information" log). For some reason, I think the chipset brand carries your sound drivers or some modem hardware from Conexant.

Did you install the game properly? Try reinstalling, but make sure you do a "Typical" installation and include all radio station features.

I don't know if your sound card drivers are corrupted, but right-click My Computer an go to properties. Click the Hardware tab and go into Device Manager. Double-click on "Sound, video and game controllers", and select every item by right-clicking and choosing "Uninstall". Reboot computer and Windows should reinstall those drivers for you automatically.

EDIT: Updated some more sound card tweaking in my previous post.

Sending people on a wild goose chase to reinstall Windows is one thing. But telling them to go out and buy new hardware? Unless the symptoms are hardware that do not meet the min sys req, this should never be advised confused.gif

What will be your recommendation in this case Demarest? A person I know had a Toshiba laptop with integrated audio and experienced stuttering sound in movies. Told him to update drivers but couldn't because the manufacturer doesn't support AC'97 codec drivers for their sound cards anymore, and so he couldn't update it. Some manufacturers make good integrated audio solutions, others don't.

Knowing that telling people to buy new hardware in an ATTEMPT to fix a problem and knowing what the solution is are two different things. For the record, to date, you're the only one thinking laptop.

Computers are the sum of their parts. If something's not working, there's a reason. It IS possible that his sound card blew up in a way that would work sometimes and not others, with other inexplicable side effects. In which case, replacing the sound card would be the right course of action. But that isn't the case here, so nobody would have any reason to believe it could possibly make a difference.

Again, not saying you're a bad person. You're putting forth more effort to fix these things than the authors from what I've seen. Which, again, is why I feel your efforts would be better spent pursuing the cause instead of just trying everything and hoping to hit it in the process.

So this thread can be closed then? But you know I am still looking for the angry.gif drivers! But since I almost listed everything possible to do with the problem, reinstalling the integrated sound card drivers and reconfiguring Vice City is the only way out. If that doesn't work, then what's next? It seems I am the only one helping here in a way.

I can't know what the solution is until there's deemed a solution first. So that's why I am trying everything possible! tounge.gif As for "effort", you mean I must let someone else get a chance to help and say a recommendation one at a time? In that case I may never ever post again.

I_Pfreely, try going to dxdiag's sound tab again and take a close look at the driver date. Anything less than the year 2005 ain't recommended - which means your sound card drivers are outdated. If it is 2004+, then you should try uninstalling/reinstalling the sound card drivers, as well as Vice City fully and configuring the Audio Setup. The last resort would be to buy a new sound card. Try out sound card hardware acceleration in emulation mode (none) to see if it helps. If not, then I don't know what kind of problem you're having and it is therefore safe to say I can't help you accurately. Post a video of this sound corruption, but note that I can't just say that you are not doing things correctly. It's up to you to give it your best and send us a "truthful" response so that I don't seem to get the idea that I'm troubleshooting an "already fixed problem". The only way I could accurately help you is if I were to come up to your house and sit right next to your computer. I really can't solve the problem when I am staring at my monitor's screen and not at your computer.

So... want to send me a remote access invitation? sarcasm.gif

I post just as how I help someone face to face with their computer probs. I am imagining myself as sitting right next to them on their computer chair. So I can't just see a solution and suggest a limited amount of accurate advices right away. It's harder for me to suggest a proper solution since I am not actually present there. BTW, I do can take advantage of 1+ post counts by posting like this you know?

Post count means nothing. Especially when it's telling people to buy new hardware, reinstall Windows, and pray.

Repeat after me: PCs are the sum of their parts.

Can be complicated, but the above is reassurance. Offering advice that addresses the issue listed shows you're listening to them. If they haven't given you enough data to properly diagnose, you tell them so so that they can help all of us help them, not send them on a wild goose chase that MIGHT help. Remember, this forum is for VC-specific issues, not Windows issues. Sometimes it's a matter of common occurances, hence the generic bug fix list. Within which it NEVER says something about buying new hardware wink.gif

Are you running with the cd in the cd drive, or trying to bypass this by means I will not talk about here?

If the disc isn't in the drive, the music will not play when doing things legitimatly.

Not so. As long as the radio stations are installed to the hard drive, the use of a crack won't have any effect on one's ability to enjoy the audio.
