Sixdust
Is that the same as this one I found on a UK website? It says 600 / 700 watt, and I assume that will be enough. And that it'll all fit together. @dustcrazy - Those cases with the PSU built-in don't seem to be powerful enough? The other cases you linked to do look nice, but the selection in the UK is somewhat limited. Thanks. The PSU seems pretty similar just a different wattage and price. The only reason I would go for the 700w or 650w is because those 8800's are monsters and adding more stuff adds up to the total.
Barguast
I'll switch the memory for one thing - forgot to mention that. That should save me a bit! I might get a sound card after all. It completely slipped my mind that the CPU would have to take up the sound processing without a sound card. I'll look into it. Do you think that PSU would be sufficient then? How am I supposed to work it out, is it just the sum of the power requirements for every component?
GTA3Freak-2001
Well there are PSU Calculators, for example Here Obviously its not going to be precise but it gives you a good idea of how much you need.
Barguast
Well there are PSU Calculators, for example Here Obviously its not going to be precise but it gives you a good idea of how much you need. Oooo, that's great thanks. A ball park figure is all I need since I'll be going over quite a bit in case I need the extra in future. Thanks. I'm thinking of going with this sound card; http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/127030/rb/27404194968 A quick check, which may be slightly inaccurate, shows that wattage should be under 600W, so the one I found should be sufficient, I think? EDIT: The 700W version is actually cheaper on that website! But I'm guessing it'll be way more expensive in the long run...?

Get the 700w then, its cheaper, the same series and just as reliable in rating. For the sound card, try to get the X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Professional Series card instead of just the regular xtremegamer. The Fatal1ty card has 64mb xram which is basically sound card ram. It comes in extremely useful for games like battlefield 2 & 2142 as well as many other games on the way.
Barguast
Suppose I could spend the little extra and get a Fatal1ty if you really think it is worth it... In answer to your previous (unanswered) question, I'm still not sold on the Raptor hard disk. That said, I'm thinking of changing my hard drive set-up - getting one 500 GB one for personal files, and another smaller one for the operating system and programs. I suppose that could be a Raptor, but I'm still not sure it would be worth it. EDIT: Just had a look on here, and neither my case or memory is SLI-certified apparently. I doubt that makes any difference. The PSU isn't certified for the 8800 GTX either, but the minimum that is is a 750W (compared to my 700W) so I think I should be okay... I'm not going dual-graphics just yet anyway! All of this stuff is going to fit together right? Do most PSU's fit most motherboards, etc? I assume all of the cabling etc, is going to come with the components? The only thing I'm buying to fix things together is that thermal paste. EDIT 2: Just realised my hard drives are OEM and don't come with screws, cables, etc. What exactly do I need to buy in addition to the hard drive to put it in properly? SATA cable and some screws if you don't have any.
gillies
Before buying a bunch of screws and cables you may not need (yeah they aren't expensive, but what is the point if you won't use them) see if you can find out about the accessories that come with your motherboard and case. Every retail motherboard I have seen came with more drive cables than could be used with it at once, and every case came with enough screws to assemble about five computers. Barguast
Thanks for that gillies, I think I should be okay - just checked and the motherboard does come with loads of the things, and I imagine the case will be the same. Well, I think I'm there... Case Antec Nine Hundred ... Motherboard Asus STRIKER EXTREME 680i SLI Socket 775 ... PSU OCZ GameXStream 700W PSU - 120mm Fan SLI Ready ATX12v v2.2 ... Keyboard/Mouse Logitech OEM Cordless Desktop Keyboard & Rechargable Mouse Black PS2/USB ... • I opted out of a second 500 GB drive and instead went for a 160 GB (solely for the operating system and programs). The Raptor drives were just too expensive for my liking I'm afraid. • I've gone for the Fatal1ty card after seeing a pretty graph showing how good it supposedly is. • I'm also going for this thermal compound for the processor heat sink. I think that should be everything. Now I just need to buy it and chuck it all together. I may buy some tools for the job too, as the ones I have are extremely poor. Does anyone see anything missing from this list? I think I've got everything covered, but your comments are as welcome as ever.
3niX
Well... Everything seems OK to me. Maybe the keyboard and mouse arent really my style since I prefer mine simple (without any extra buttons) and light (without batteries). But that just me... One question though (just want to know)... Do you really need a FDD? I havent used one for years...
Barguast
One question though (just want to know)... Do you really need a FDD?I havent used one for years... No. I just feel I should have one. It is actually saving me money since you get £10 for any order from eBuyer that is over £30. And the FDD, combined with the DVD writer and Thermal paste will just tip the £30 mark. Not completely set on the keyboard, but it has some excellent reviews and I'd miss the media player keys that I currently have if I went without in a wireless keyboard. Just bought a 32" TV to plug this thing into.

Barguast
It's a Samsung R87 LCD; It's got a few HDMI ports, which I'll be able to plug the PC straight into with a DVI-HDMI cable. I needed a new TV too, so it made sense to get one to use as a monitor. EDIT: I want a wireless keyboard and mouse as obviously I'm going to be sat back from the monitor. All I've seen so far is a rechargable mouse and a battery powered keyboard. How come there aren't many rechargable keyboards? The only one I've seen is this but it costs a fortune since its Bluetooth.
Sixdust
Sweet!!!!! Quad core cpu reaching the $300 range. I think this will be the cpu of my choice unless AMD gets its act together.
Barguast
Bah, too late for that. Just an update, but I now have most of the components. I received some dodgy RAM, and have since sent that back, and the graphics card I wanted was sold out EVERYWHERE so I opted for the standard EVGA 8800GTX rather than the overclocked version. I should have it built this week if all goes well. Quick question, while I'm here. Is there any point whatsoever in me installing 64-bit Vista instead of good ol' 32-bit? I have 2GB of memory, so there seem to be little point.
Sixdust
32bit is more than fine. 64 bit has yet to be fully utilized. You may still want to stick with xp pro until stuff is fixed with vista such as compatibility. It's good to know that your PC is coming together. Remember This.
I'm aiming to be building a new PC soon, so reading through this topic has helped a lot. I'm probably not going to be going for quite such a high-end machine (8600 instead of 8800 videocard etc) but reading the topic has given me a lot of good pointers. Sixdust in particular, you know your stuff! And Barguast, I hope you realise we will all be requiring lots of pictures once you have finished! Barguast
And Barguast, I hope you realise we will all be requiring lots of pictures once you have finished! Well, I'm getting my graphics card and memory replacements today, so hopefully I'll be able to get the mother working tonight! I'd put most of the thing together, but last night I thought I'd have a tidy up (the Antec case, despite the prettiness, is a little cramped, and I haven't even put the huuuge graphics card in yet!). After getting everything tucked away, I switched the thing on, the fans started up and... then stopped. Including the CPU fan. Thankfully, I'm pretty sure I just wired up the power incorrectly. I quickly ripped everything out and wired up the fans again, and they worked again. Hopefully it'll all be okay.
Barguast
All done. I'll take a photo or two later if I get time. I've got the PC running through the TV via the HDMI port, and it looks fricken beautiful.

Barguast
My phone camera is crappy. The front / side The transparent side (unfortunately this is usually facing the wall!) GTAF in glorious 1360x768 Those are the best shots I could get without unplugging the whole thing and carrying it into a better lit room.
GTA3Freak-2001
That's actually a very nice case, I really like the position of the USB and other connections and the front section is real nice.

Sixdust
Well Barguast, how easy was that? Out of a 1-10 scale, 1 being easiest. As for your setup, sex in a case. Now to put some killer games on that baby and give them a whirl. Good job sir and hopefully your newly acquired knowledge will help you and others in the future. Barguast
It was pretty straightforward actually. The only problem was the dodgy memory modules, but they were easily replaced and it didn't take any longer to get it built thanks to the looong wait for a graphics card. Worth the wait though. My girlfiriend's needing a new PC now, and I've offered to build that too. It won't be as ambitious as this one, but I'm sure I can build her a decent one on the cheap!
