New Call of Duty unveiling on April 28?

Source: A forum post on the official Infinity Ward Web site.

The official story: See below.

What we heard: On the Web site of Call of Duty 2 developer Infinity Ward, an admin writes that some big news is coming out of the Encino, California-based studio this Saturday. After listing three famous events that have taken place on April 28, community liaison "fourzerotwo" says, "What goes down this April 28th is equal to, if not surpasses, the magnitude of any of those."

Even though the news posting makes no mention of any game details, fans are already predicting that the big news is a Call of Duty 4 announcement. Infinity Ward has yet to develop a game outside of the Call of Duty series, and Call of Duty 4 getting made eventually is almost a no-brainer.

In case it wasn't clearly known, the Call of Duty franchise has become a big money-maker for Activision. The first-person shooter World War II games have done extremely well in retail, and have even stuffed Activision execs' pockets after release thanks to downloadable content.

Thanks to alternating development duties between Infinity Ward and Treyarch, a new Call of Duty game can be pumped out each year, with the former doing 2007 duty.

Multiple fans even claim that Treyarch is already looking Call of Duty 5 level designers on its Web site, but the company's online postings no longer mention a game name (though "COD" is listed in the job name). They do, however, mention "an industry leading first person action war franchise" and ask that applicants "preferably be a fan of World War 2 shooters."

While all signs point towards a Call of Duty 4 announcement being not bogus, the real question is where--and when--the game will take place. More than a year ago, rumors surfaced about Call of Duty abandoning its WWII setting and moving towards modern day warfare, a la Battlefield 2. Last November, the same rumor resurfaced from a different source and pegged Infinity Ward as the game's developer.

[uPDATE] Sources close to Activision have since confirmed to GameSpot that the April 28 announcement will be for a "fourth" Call of Duty game. However, said source would not divulge any details about the game itself.

Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus a new Call of Duty is going to be unveiled on April 28. However, WWII shooter fans shouldn't load their Panzerschrecks just yet, as the game could be set in modern times.

Yay! Back to Infinity Ward!

I hope to christ the rumors of it moving out of WWII are false, though. I prefer it to "Modern combat". pfft.

f*ck YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH!!!!

I love COD 2, IMO best online game on 360 ever. COD 3 was a huge dissapointment and pretty lame online. I'm stoked it's going back into Infinity Ward's hands, I've been playing a lot of COD 2 lately and this is fantastic news. I also hope it stays in the WW II era and we get good snowy maps like in COD 2.

Bleh. I remember playing the third one I believe on the 360 and I didn't care for it much. I still like COD 1 and I enjoyed the COD 2 demo (never bought it). Hopefully they will fix whatever it was I didn't like about COD 3.

i kinda dont like Call of duty games at the moment or any games with the Ww2 theme. They just got boring too many of them

eiter bogus or not

I've been playing and I still am COD 3 multiplayer on Xbox 360. So COD 2 multiplayer is even better than 3? Mm... perhaps I should get 2.

Oh yeah! I'm buzzing now. Been a COD fan for a long long time (Ok so 2004 isn't that long ago) Love the franchise to bits, easily the best WWII shooter out there.

COD3 was immense! so was COD2 so both Treyarch and Infinity Wards are good. Either way, they'll make a greatjob of it.

Hopefully it'll have the same amount of visual detail (The uniforms) in it that Treyarch managed to put into COD3. April 28th, here we come!

Another CoD, omg, can't wait for this game either, loved CoD3 on the 360.

I hope they fix the online play for CoD4 becuase CoD3 was a pile of sh*t the way it was set out and trying to find game sthat you could never get into. mad.gif

I remember ages ago Infinity Ward confirming that CoD4 would be exclusive to the PC this time, not sure whether it's still true though.

If so, a delight i'm sure is in store for PC gamers.

Yeah, I remember the same thing. A few months after CoD2 came out, when they announced CoD3. CoD3 would be the game for the consoles, thus no Infinity Ward, and CoD4 would be their PC comeback.

for pc?

Yes, Infinity Ward are back, and are making COD4 on 360, PS3 and PC, not sure were you heard 'PC exclusive' Rob.

And this isn't a WW2 game, its going to be set in Modern times, its already been confirmed a couple of months back.

A reliable source close to the Call of Duty development teams has revealed not only the existence of Call of Duty 4, but vital details surrounding the game as well, including the fact that it will be based on modern combat.

According to our source, Call of Duty 4 will be developed by Infinity Ward, the developer behind the first and second installments. The three-way deal established between Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Activision states that Infinity Ward will develop all even numbered titles while Treyarch develops the odd numbered games, such as Call of Duty 3. Treyarch did develop Call of Duty 2: Big Red One as well, however.

As aforementioned, Call of Duty 4 is said to step away from the war torn locales of World War II, instead focusing on the battlefields of present day. It is unknown if it will take the same path as Electronic Arts’ Battlefield franchise, placing the spotlight on the Middle East.

The source compared Call of Duty 4’s technical achievements to other games saying that while most shooters have two or three critical points on the head, Call of Duty 4 has 16, saying that you can shoot the side of an opponent’s helmet to make it spin on their head, or knock the helmet clean off. Supposedly you will even be able to shoot an enemy’s ear off.

Although Call of Duty’s single player has always been a mainstay of the franchise, the multiplayer is certainly something to write home about. Our source has said that there have been multiplayer bouts with 54 players. PC gamers will be happy to know that they will be able to join the action once again, as Infinity Ward is supposed to be bringing Call of Duty 4 to the PC as well as consoles. Call of Duty 3 is only available on consoles and eventually the PSP.

It's hardly reliable, but it's probably the site that has caused the rumours to circulate.
