I wouldn't call Driver a clone of GTA.

the original driver was not a gta clone.

but with driv3r it became a gta clone

in that case, GTA 3 was a Driver 2 clone

why?

Because driver 2 had GTA-style gameplay a year before GTA 3.

Driv3r merely **gulp** "improved" on the Driver 2 gameplay much like GTA 3 merely brought the GTA 2 gameplay to 3D.

the Driver series isn't a clone of the GTA series, they are just 2 games in the same genre

Driver 2 featured (for the first time) an open ended world in which you could commit various nefarious acts of debauchery

Release date?:

November 13th, 2000 (on the PS1)

---------------------------------------------------------------

GTA3 revolutionized the open ended-gameplay, and made it what it is today.

Release date?:

October 22, 2001 (on the PS2)

So not only did Driver 2 come out a full generation before GTA3, it was the father of the open-ended gameplay world.

So I guess that SIP was just reminding us that GTA3 is a Driver 2 clone. Yea, I said it.

Edit. Damn you Sip tounge.gif

But gta did invent the ENTIRE idea of ponyfarming with gta 1.

The on-foot aspects of driver 2 were truly sh*t!

And wolfenstein 3d created FPS as we know them today, that doesn't mean every FPS is a wolfenstein clone.

I love the GTA games, but i still respect driver 2. just because GTA 3 did it right doesn't mean driver 2 didn't do it.

I bet half the people in this thread talking sh*t don't even have the game. I have it, and I can tell you it's a remarkable improvement over Driv3r, and it includes some innovations that the GTA games could learn from. One thing, is that wanted levels are much more varied. There isn't one "master" felony meter, there are seperate bars. There is a bar attached to you whilst on-foot, and felony bars attached to every car you drive. If you ditch a car(after losing the cops first) and exit it, you will switch back to your empty felony meter and be able to walk around with noone bothering you. If you get a felony meter on-foot, lose the cops and get into a car, and again, you'll switch to an empty felony meter. The targeting system is also improved. The voice acting and cutscenes are great as always, and the missions are not such a pain in the ass anymore. There's also a much wider variety of things to do, including customizing cars and racing(on actual speedways).

It's still no GTA 3, VC, or SA, but it deserves more credit. It's a shame some people are fanboys and can't give other open-world games a chance.

Well, to play Devil's Advocate Dude5K, the handling of the cars on Parallel Lines is a complete mockery of the Driver franchise. It feels more like an arcade NFS than the tried-and-true Driver physics. The on-foot is still appalling, and motorcycle riding still sucks worse than a Motorcross Mania budget title. If anything, it is an upgrade from it's shunned brother, but Parallel Lines is by no means, a good game.

TheDude5000

Well no matter how good the driving handling/physhics were in Driv3r, that didn't really help it, did it? You'd still easily crash into static objects whilst on chase missions, stuff like that. And it didn't make you forget about all the other screw ups in the game either.

Agree to disagree. I think it's better than Driv3r, and I still find it to be an enjoyable game anyway, and I do look forward to the PSP port.

It's a step up from Driv3r.

It's more of a side step to Driv3r.

It wasn't perfect.. infact it was far from perfect, but it at least had it's strong points which made it different.. confused.gif

Yeah, I like how you put that. Sucks, but in a different way. Interesting.

If the cops weren't so easy to lose this game would be soo much more fun.

I have the PS2 version, and I have to say, it's no GTA clone but it's a damn good game. The gameplay isn't the best, but the storyline is fullproof. Some of the missions are damn annoying, yet some of them are so fun I find myself going through the whole storyline just to get to them.

If you want to comment on a game, play it first. I for one am looking forward to the PC port, and hope someone will make an online mod similar to SAMP.

thanks for the information smile.gif if they can improve the graphics a little bit this can be a good game sigh.gif

I like the car crashes, so i just tear around causing pileups. I don't like how they have gone over to pony-farming in between missions though, it just doesn't feel like Driver. The car mods are nice though, and so is the racing. Plus there's loads of traffic everywhere, you really have to weave around. The walking and shooting are WAY better than Driver 3, but still sh*t. One thing i don't like (here comes a wierd one) is how they changed the front of the 50's cabs to have a 'split' grille, makes them look like Volvo Amazons rather than Checkers.

I collect all f-r-e-e r-o-a-ming games, because i love exploring new cities and trying out all of the cars. And parallel lines is one of the better ones, but none of them come close to GTA of course

Best Driver game is still the first one though!

The missions in Driver PL are nothing like as good as in the GTA series, but it's streets ahead of True Crime. Driver PL plays okay, and the graphics are very impressive, even on PS2 on a normal TV. On HDTV it looks brilliant - better than any GTA to date. Just driving around is great for explorers.

Mister Pink

Yes, Rockstar invented the idea of moving around freely in one space. dozingoff.gif

Anyway, Driver: PL is a huge improvement from Driv3r. The cars/car handling is one of the best there is. You can feel the weight of a car in the way it handles and takes corners. Plenty of nice 70's cars to cruise around in. Nice choice of modding:

-Bullet-proof windows

-Bullet-Proof tyres

-Array of premade design paint jobs

-Engine Upgrades

I loved the missions. Some were kind of hard. There's a mission where you have to visit a prision and bust them out . It's one of my favourite missions.

The time change from 70's to 2006 is amazing. There's a different feeling and atomosphere. New cars including the Mercedes CLS55 AMG

Also they have the Chrysler 300.

Don't compare it to GTA. It's not. It has it's own style of gaming and it's interesting.

don't know why they took the pc screenshots at such a low resolution (maybe they aren't? 640*400 is pretty low..) but i'm sure the final pc version will look much better at a proper resolution. Graphically its a step up from SA, but not quite on par with gta4, and rightly so.

hmm......driver mods anyone ?

I liked Parallel Lines... it was the only Driver I had a good time with... but that's because it was a big GTA clone.

It's fun though being in a huge NYC with better graphics* though... i'll probably get it for PC.

*sound like another game coming out? tounge.gif
