I like to tell my car when to go, not when to stop.

When the last topic was made, I had never driven an automatic transmission before, now that I have, my personal dislike toward it has been vindicated.

Manual all the way. As long as I have use of my left leg, I'll drive a manual.

Manual all the way... i even dislike these tiptronic ones, feels like i'm playing a video game instead of driving a car... cry.gif

I just can't drive automatics, period. Anyone else find themselves in 2nd gear in a quick acceleration and are baffled as to why the stupid system decided 3rd gear was necessary when you only just reached 1000 revs? Stupid things. When driving a car I like to feel like I'm driving a car, not a tram, so it's manual for me.

NB. I've only ever driven a Toyota, a Nissan, and a Ford automatic system; as well as an Audi tiptronic. All were ghastly.

i can drive auto and stick, but auto is a preference. when youre on stick, you cant eat or talk on the phone, and you stall.

normaly, you aren't suposed to eat or talk on the phone while driving sarcasm.gif

i've seen a lot of people causing accidents because they were doing other things than paying attention to the road...

I love driving stick. Basicly none of my friends know how to drive a stick casue they are lazy asses, so i dont have to worry abotu people wanting to drive my jeep when we go offroading anymore. I could never go back to auto after driving a stick, i like bein in control with what gear im in.

Allthough i dont like stick for one reason, i cant talk on my phone while eating hamburgers and playing video games and putting on my makeup and reading playboy at the same time while driving, wich is gay.

They both have their uses.

Standard: when you want control, milage, fun. basically enjoyment driving.

auotmatic: when you don't want to wear your arm/leg raw sh*tfting 300 times in a day. commercial/errand driving.

You know I'm bored when I look in this forum, anyways... He's got it right, and since I haven't had any fun driving since I was 16 years old; I drive an automatic. I drive around 300 miles a day, and I would probably kill myself if I had to drive stick.

I prefer manual, I was driving my dad's auto Ford the other day in a really hilly area. The damn thing thought that it should stay at 1500 rpm going up a really steep hill, and no matter how much I pushed the gas pedal it just wouldn't shift down. mad.gif Then at the top of the hill it finally shifts down, revs jump to 3000 and it shifts up again, all in a few seconds time. It just can't make up its mind.

Actually... in drivers Ed I was taught to keep both hands on the wheel at 9 and 3, or 10 and 2. I think the 9 and 3 are for cars with air bags, so your arms don't go flying in your face during a crash.

But who really drives with 2 hands anyways???

most of the time i drive with one hand on the shifter and other on the wheel, but when i'm speeding i tend to keep both on the wheel most of the time, it helps me to focus, plus, it requires less force to make sudden moves with 2 hands...

hmm... autos are good for just getting off for a good start and manuals are good for driving in a single gear, god so hard!!! How do you do a brake torque at a stop sign with a manual?

Rev it and drop the clutch while quickly switching your left foot to the brake pedal. It's not exactly the hardest thing to do, but heel-toe shifting is.

Depends, pros and cons for everything.

I personally would go for standard, so one point there.

Standard is good because it usually has closer gear ratios, one or two extra gears, more control over power and milage compared to it's automatic counterpart. (say a 5-spd std mustang vs a 4-spd auto mustang)

Automatic, however doesnt require as much attention to drive, you can eat say mc donalds while driving, or whatever with your extra free hand, instead of shifting with it. Plus it shifts much faster than a human can (provided its built to) and just overall easier to drive. (for example, the Viper twins as I call them, identical cars, just ones standard the other's auto, the auto is slightly faster, I think by a 10th or 100th of a second, in the 8s range)

So all in all, it depends on what you want to do with your car, luxury cars are almost never standard, and the reasons are above. Sports cars are almost always standard, and again the reasons are above.

I hate things that do things for you, or make your own decisons for you. Like IE7 which 'knows' you are going to visit scam and phishing sites so constantly 'warns' you every time something that isn't an image or text is on a page. That's an Auto!

Plus you can get better fuel economy with a Manual, by driving everywhere in top gear XD. You can also get better acceleration for overtaking trucks when you need to. And these paddle things piss me off. I wanted one of those Smart Roadsters but you can't get them with a 'real' gearbox. And the cheapest one is 11 grand and doesnt even have a radio XD
