GI Interview w/ Sam Houser

And some of its achievements simply blow your mind, such as its load times. After an initial loading sequence, the game will never load again - even when you transition between interior and exterior locations.

According to Houser, Rockstar North is giving people more freedom, more choice, and more sense of control over their destiny.

"In all previous GTA games you might have felt like a slave," opines Houser.

"The story is told in a number of different ways," adds Houser. "But we've tried to replicate as many ways possible that you engage with people. There's talking [in person], cell phones, and a bunch of other ways of giving the player information. We are trying to use that kind of stuff to give you back story or front story, or to explain character motivation."

Have we seen the end of cutscenes? I can think of no better way to give us more sense of control than to give us complete control. From the minute we pick up the controller to the minute the last boss is dead(?), we should have full control over our character.

Discuss.

I personally think lots of scripted cutscenes are good for the storyline. Since the game's mostly third-person anyway...

And those quotes don't prove that we won't have 'em. It might mean that we'll be able to choose our dialogue lines, etc., nothing about cutscenes.

we should be able to play through custscenes.

for e.g. if a car is chasing Niko ou should have to tap x repeatedly to escape.

Nah I don't think those comments mean no cut scenes at all, maybe not as many perhaps.

Thanks for posting the full article. icon14.gif

IMO - I believe that cutscenes have to stay in the game. The game still has to be built around the central story and that has to be achieved by having your hand held through some aspects of the storyline. There won't be as many though. I like that.

While I understand what you all are saying, the hints he's dropping make for a compelling argument. Besides, conspiracies are fun.

"Seamless transitions" to and from cutscenes like in DOOM were nice, but still felt tacked on.

touchy subject here... this is an overlooked fact and it will make a big difference in the level of immersion we are getting in the new game. needless to say, it might piss a lot of people off, as it shapes the way the game reveals the plot and story.

to give an example, oblivion is much more immersive than most rpg's and adventure games because everything happens in front of you, in real time, cutscenes are virtually inexistent.

it would be interesting to have gta in a similar way... it would be step forward imo, towards greater immersion.

like most other things, we'll have to wait and find out.

but i do believe we will have a cutscene for the intro anyway. cool.gif

I believe that r*'s cutscenes are some of if not the best, and that they wont completely throw them away.

I read that the Euphoria engine gets rid of the need for motion-capture, but R* have not confirmed that they'll use Euphoria. But the only way I can still imagine cutscenes looking realistic is if there's cutscenes with motion-capture, but it would be even more realistic if there weren't any cutscenes. So I don't know anything.

I guess a good question is: Do we want cutscenes? Sure, Rockstar has some great cutscenes in their games, but if they could relay all the information real-time, would that be more appropriate?

I think it would fit right in line with their "more realism, more interaction, more freedom" approach to IV.

Well they arent really neccessary if the story can be advanced just as good in gameplay. I wouldnt mind taking part in some of the cutscenes from the earlier games.

Yeah the first thing I'd have done if story was interactive was kill Tenpenny & Polaski, and every mofo who gave me sh*t.

For sure Pulaski. I didn't like him the moment he stepped out. I'd probably let Tenpenny stay around, at least til he dropped me in BFE. I was pissed when Sammy L died in Deep Blue Sea so soon...And right in the middle of his speech! I digress... There is limitless potential, and I wouldn't put it past R* to get us live the action, rather than sitting back watching with the controller in our lap.

like a dude pointed out, you could find a lotta wayz to mess up the story line if u had control during cutscenes, and once a character dies n u don't even know that u kiiled an imporatnt person coz u probably shot him before any dialogues began, n then u save the game n its all over. cry.gif

Guess that'd make you SOL, huh? Lesson learned, pony roamer.

Seriously though, Rockstar still holds the magic wand, and can force us however they see fit...Extra bodyguards and a pat-down will keep the most important NPCs alive.

Interactive cut scenes like in Resident Evil 4 would be great.

I really enjoyed having a 20 second break to relax and watch the cutscenes everytime you went on a new mission. As already pointed out, if it went interative you could just spoil the storyline by blasting everyones head off biggrin.gif I hope they stay, and infact I will put my neck on the line (yes brave I know) and say that cutscenes are here to stay!

To cite a recent very well-made dialogue/cutscene example: watch the Mass Effect official trailer 2 (the one which is 5 minutes long). Now that's something done by pros and executed really well.

Think more along the lines of driving with a homie to Cluckin' Bell to plan the next heist...with a camera in the car.

"Pull over there," as the NPC points to an empty space...you can pull in or keep driving..."Hey what are you doing? I said over there." You continue to Burgershot..."Nah, I'm in the mood for cluckin' chicken"...Stay parked long enough, and the NPC will leave. "Call me later if you feel like chicken."

Instead of some pre-scripted cruise with Big Smoke yelling about God knows what, we get interactive dialog and choices along the way.

Plus, you don't have to shoot everyone you meet.

Ofcourse there will be cutscenes. GTA is known for its unmatched motioncapture and voice acting in their cinematics, and they wouldn't just skip that. It's a big part of the appeal.

Weird, I thought Rockstar was known for its massive f r e e r o a m universe. Its impressive graphics. Its plethora of cars. When I got San Andreas, not once did I think to myself, "ooh I can't wait to see the motion capture in their cinematics." Voice acting can still remain, and (hopefully) NaturalMotion will take care of motioncapture.

Rockstar is known to break the mold, and cutscenes seem outdone. Give us a game to play it, not to watch it.

you are misunderstanding the difference between a cut scene and a load screen. A cut scene is a clip of video to inform you about the mission or to progress the storyline. a load screen puts an image on screen so the game can be loaded. he said there were going to be no load screens not cutscenes

What about the quotes from the many previews that praised how amazing the cutscenes looked in IV, how much they've matured and improved on facial expressions, etc?

There's still gonna be cutscenes.

Didn't some magazine or smething mention the great expressions on Niko's face?

And I want the cutscenes in...

I just wanna be able to pick between 3-10 options...

Little Jacob: "So, if you kill this dude, you get to keep the gun... Comprende...?"

Option screen comes up...

1) Sure, sounds fair... 2) Since you put it thateh way... I'm in... 3) I'll need a better gun, (1. Sniper, 2. Rifle. 3. Better handgun etc...) 4) No way José, too risky... 5) I'll get back to ya...

Cut scenes in GTA are wicked..loved the one in SA where CJ drove Sweet, Ryder and Big Smoke to cluckin bell to get food and Big Smoke orderd 2 Number 9's, a number 9 large, a number 6 with extra dip, a number 49 and a large soda...

Or something along those lines biggrin.gif

Keep the cutscenes, they make the game a helluva lot better.
