dertyjerzian
I am f*cking pissed. I had beryl running perfectly on Edgy and now when I reinstall edgy, reingstalling my nvidia drivers breaks linux, let alone getting to the point where I install beryl. And for the record, in my honest opinion, linux is good for the most part, but it has nowhere near the speed of xp. Slow sh*t. Inferior screens and such. Still, you cant beat free and it's come a long way since I had my very first copy of Slackware. f*cking ubuntu. I had a script/app called ENVY that installed without a hitch, but then wehn I reformatted, it all the sudden didnt meet dependancies. BULLsh*t I had beryl running, reformatted and envy didnt work... No big deal... Just do that manually then install beryl... Cool Reformatted a third time, to be sure I didnt break anything cause apt had errors, go to install nvidia drivers: cool. Install beryl: BROKEN The first time I did this I had all my programs in the menus right, even a whole section for System tools. Now it ends at sound and video. This thing is bullsh*t man. Seriously. f*ck linux. It truly is just a piece of slow sh*t maintained by the retarded programmers who cant get a job with M$<3 I'm still going to play with it though, cause I appreciate the work that special people do. If Linux is running slower than Windows, then something is broken on the install. Maybe you should, I don't know... Not run beryl and expect it to perform aswell as Windows? Sounds like maybe someone is a special user. QUOTE (K^2) ...not only is it legal for you to go around with a concealed penis, it requires absolutely no registration! dertyjerzian
naw dude, this is all wothout beryl. It ran better with beryl than without it, actually. Now it just breaks whenever I install the nvidia drivers. and I think your post was gay too<3 EDIt: Now Im using kubuntu. If I break this one, I'll try something else, but it is rather speedy. Is there something about the latest 386 kubuntu that makes it faster than edgy eft? Edited April 16, 2007 by dertyjerzian

Is there something about the latest 386 kubuntu that makes it faster than edgy eft? Well, I don't think they're using proprietary drivers in Feisty anymore, or something like that. I've had a lot of instabillity issues with Edgy-Feisty. I think it has mostly to do with the legacy nvidia drivers, but whenever I try to play video I usually get seriously system hangs--and I mean complete hangups, here, not "i'll just press ctrl alt del to restart" or something. That's why I've installed Debian, though I haven't really had a chance to use it yet installing KDE. But yeah, don't blame linux, it's probably Ubuntu's issue. dertyjerzian
or my own issue, because I'm new as hell to this. Debian you say? *runs to google*
Saggy
or my own issue, because I'm new as hell to this. Debian you say? *runs to google* Well, Debian doesn't seem much of a stone's throw off from the k/ubuntu (sh*t, I hope know Debian purist kills me for saying that), except for that it's much more customizable. It also seems much more stable and faster; I didn't have much difficulty getting my NVIDIA drivers at TVOut installed on on a legacy card, but I've had a few little hiccups here and there with xorg. I'm sure that it is xorg, because my mouse still runs fine, however my keyboard and the GUI is nonresponsive--this has only happened twice so far, and usually when I was using my GPU a bit too much (watching video on S-Video out, compiling several things, etc)--may be a hardware issue. In any case, I added the NvAGP option to my devices entries in my xorg conf. Tecno said that he fixed some stability issues when he ran some NVIDIA products with this, but I had no luck with it on Edgy (never even got the driver installed on Feisty). For the most part it seems stable, aside form those various hiccups, but it's understandable to me considering that I'm using a GeForce2 MX400 with drivers that probably just barely support it. In any case, I'm digging Debian. For the most crucial things it's pretty automated, but leaves just the right about of wiggle room at startup for various customization. I was rather displeased that it came with GNOME at first, and that the main ftp mirror was very slow, but that's what I get for not downloading the KDE-specific image. Anyway, I hope it just turns out that I just need to find the right Distribution. I have a feeling that's the case, but I'm wondering if maybe my hardware componets are a little messed up. EDIT Heh, well, according to nmap that's a toughy. the_darkside_986
I'm now running Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty). I d/l'd it yesterday even though the servers were overwhelmed. That did not deter me. I upgraded from 6.06 to 7.04 because my /home was on a different partition. But today I backed up my data on DVD and did a complete fresh install since I wanted to resize all my partitions. /home needed more space. Ubuntu Feisty is extremely easy to install, and I had fewer hardware support problems with it than I did with Ubuntu Dapper or Windows XP Pro or Suse Linux 10.1. It is also a great improvement over the previous versions of Ubuntu. I kinda like how there is now the option to install half-legal "patented" codecs simply by clicking on the file to be played and clicking a few buttons in a dialog. But I still wish that there would be an easy way to encourage the users to convert all their media to ogg format. That should at least be an alternative option. The only serious problem that I have found while using the distro is the horrid choice (or lack of) of desktop backgrounds. I mean, there's s*** brown, or extra s****y brown, or none at all. So I had to browse the net for some decent pics. Also, the choice of themes is lacking compared to Dapper. But that is not really a serious issue as long as one has an internet connection. Now I wish I would've chose to do that on my Debian install, but it would made different partitions for /var and /etc/ and stuff as well, and I wouldn't have a clue what I should set those at. Oh well, I've already got it installed now. QUOTE (K^2) ...not only is it legal for you to go around with a concealed penis, it requires absolutely no registration! the_darkside_986
What's even cooler than that idea is the fact that I was able to resize an ext3 partition without screwing it up. Anyone here use FreeBSD? I used my freed up 6 GB to play around with PC-BSD. It was a mess trying to get X server, wireless, and sound working but it works great on older machines. I am probably the only person in my major (Computer Science) that actually finds it fun to run a REAL Unix OS on a personal computer. Everybody else loves Windows and crap. How boring and unexciting that gets after a while.

just another thug
I run Slackware on my two desktops, and I am still unsure about my third desktop (it runs Windows 98 currently) and my last desktop runs a mixture of Windows 3.1 and Small Linux. And my laptop runs Ubuntu. ZOMG!!! Svip uses windows, quick somebody call the four horseman of the apocalypse. I had that same thought. I had to read Svip's post three of four times to truly verify what he said.
jersiq
Not a linux distro, but I just installed Solaris 10 on a Netra120 Server. Can I still join the club? I am going to use it for mostly Perl tinkering for right now, but it may grow in usage later, who knows?
riccbhard
I use Fedora Core 6, "Zod". Gnome for the window manager (Don't really like anything else). I have Beryl working with the actual nVidia drivers for my 7600GS installed and working. Wine 0.9.29 - Most programs work OK, and typically at quite decent speed. Both of my servers (One for my website & file storage, the second for [email protected]) run Linux. The webserver, runs ClarkConnect Community Edition 4.0, which I believe is a mixture of Red Had and some other things. PIII 1GHz with 512MB RAM, 384MB Swap The [email protected] machine runs Debian "Lenny", and no outside access is allowed to it incoming, however it can communicate around the ClarkConnect Firewall to be albe to Download/Upload work units for Folding. P4 1.5Ghz, 128MB RAM, 512MB Swap (only about 40% of the physical memory is used at any given time, all it does all day is fold. Swap is typically always 0%) (Also, Windows XP SP2 on the machine with Fedora)
_-playero-_
Ubuntu 7.04, beryl running all the time of course. Using Vmware Workstation 6 to run Windows XP Professional, networked with Ubuntu so I can use rdesktop and seamlessrdp to use windows applications almost seamlessly. I'll show some pics later, I'm finally making it work the way I want, but it took a BIG while. Planning to use Server 2003 instead, because of the RDP 6.0. What can I say, I LOVE Ubuntu, but there are some windows things I can't let go.

iamdigitalman
Usually, i'll use damn small linux embedded on my Windows 98 box when I need to, and I am beta testing fluxbuntu, the version of ubuntu based on the lightweight flux windowing system, lighter than xcfe. Loman
Anything that ends in -buntu is gold I've been using Ubuntu on and off, for the past three or four versions. If I could play a few of my games on it I would probably use it full time. I've been using Vista lately, but Beryl blows it away. I really love the 3d-cube, there is a windows version, but it is nowhere near as good. I bet some of you are looking at my avatar, please don't lynch me! I got caught up in the vista hype for a while, I'm going to change it soon
Sixdust
I recently started messing around with Fedora Core 7.04 Test but its instable so I can't install it. I also started messing around with VMware along with Auditor and Back Track 2 for some wi-fi fun with neighbors.
