Forty
You won't regret it. I'm on my second playthrough right now at level 56 with the same character. I thought I did most everything on the first time through but I'm still finding some stuff I missed. There are an astounding number of dialog options, too. I've got close to 70 hours on this character and still have about 40% to go on the second pass. This game is highly addicting. No co-op though, Imi. I thought it only went up to level

RMT
What's the point of the auto save system? I just lost 1 to 2 hours progress because I died and it didn't even bother to auto save. Went to many locations. What actually provokes an auto save? since I completed about 3 side quests and a bit of the main, went to a planet and went around all of the citadel. Manual saving from now on then Pacrel Focre

Manual saving from now on then Auto-save is the biggest gripe with Mass Effect for me. Keep your own saves and forget about the auto entirely. It doesn't work very consistently. Voodoo
The auto save seems to only happen consistently when you arrive at a planet/the citadel and when you return to the Normandy. There are a few mid mission auto saves in some of the main areas which seem to be thrown in just to lull you into a false sense of security. Another confusing thing is that the auto save isn't chronological with respect to user saves and resuming after dying loads the auto save even if you nave a newer user save in the list.. I just about had a heart attack on my second playthrough after spending a couple of hours on Novaria doing side quests and making my way to peak 15 on veteran difficulty. I had been keeping a current save file the whole time but when I got waxed by a bunch of Rachni on the roof of the facility and hit resume, it started me at the very beginning back by the ship dock. After catching my breath, I loaded my save file which was two hours newer than the auto save the game loaded. Whew.
TEoS
Yeah, you need to save whore to play this game, apparently this can't be stressed enough. I usually try and save after every major battle. Never know when you'll get blindsided by a geth walker guy and one shotted by that blue laser sh*t. I'm going for the Completionist, Soldier, Sentinel, and Paragon on this, my second play through. Doing most of the sidequests now, had a bad thought: can you do the Soldier and Sentinel achievements in the same playthrough? Is it possible? You have to complete the majority of the game with each of the different squad members to get those so you could do two at once. It takes at least 3 playthroughs to get them all. Voodoo
Yeah but uh... the ending. You know, one of them dies, can you get 75% before that point or am I wasting my time? Yeah, I'm sure you can. I think "majority" includes sides, so you can easily hit that before Vermire. You could always play it safe and split them up, though.
beanmachine43
Hardcore really isn't that 'hardcore' playing as a Soldier. I also planned on beating Hardcore with my saved character, but it's no fun trying to play Renegade style when your Charm is maxed out, so I started a new character. When I killed the Rachni queen I felt like a complete and total ass. Seriously, I almost loaded up my last save and changed my mind, but I figured if I'm being a dick all the way up to this point, why stop now? Forty
I've always had ADD. I mean, I get a game that I'm so pumped up about...but after I reach a tough part or a long stretch that is uninteresting, I'll play less and before I realize it, I've totally forgotten where I was in the game. Voodoo
Easily discouraged, then. Tough parts and long stretches in games usually make me want to just hammer through them. I can't quit until I get past them.
Forty
Easily discouraged indeed. I still love the game, but I don't feel the same thrill as I did the first few days.
Starion
Did anybody else feel that the main storyline was rather short? I mean, yeah, with side missions included, the game can easily kill 30 hours of your time, but once you've done the story once.. It just seems a little.. Boring. I mean, I love the story, the combat, everything. But now I've done it.. I feel a little put off, I'm about half way through a second playthrough, but this time with a renegade character. If I put that behind me though and decide to play it anyway, it's a truly awesome game. Bring on Mass Effect 2. mod it with Nitrous Oxide and chassis dyno. Voodoo
Yeah, I'm lvl 58 now on my second playthrough and I've made sure to save before every interaction in order to exhaust as much of the dialog as possible. I already played the ending four times on the first playthrough, so after this one I can't see myself doing a third. I've maxed renegade already and I haven't even done Virmire yet. A few more sides and I'll probably hit lvl 60 before I get there, too. I'm all about the eventual DLC, though.

Have you tried getting back to the garage area once landing back on the planet again? There might be another Mako there.. Or the door might just be locked. But thats a worst case scenario. I will admit though, I did find it annoying that they just teleported you back into the Normandy, I would of liked to drive back to the Base. :l Edited December 2, 2007 by Starion mod it with Nitrous Oxide and chassis dyno. Slick Willy
It's a pretty good game, I wish I had enough time to play for long periods so I could get sucked in by the story line. It took me forever to figure out that you can't zoom in with an untrained weapon. I almost took the game back because I couldn't zoom on my sniper rifle with a scope on it. Is the game relatively short? Because I've gone to all three planets, tracked the main dude down and faught him, and now I'm head back to the Citadel. I was looking at a game guide and it seems that I'm almost done.

If you've done some exploring you should have some side missions to do to flesh it out a bit, but after Virmire you're getting close to the end. Most of the sides are worth doing and add allot of gameplay, so with them included I wouldn't call the game short at all. Dang! It takes a really long time to level up from 58-60. I'm just realizing there is more of an exp spread on those levels. I'm still at 59 on Ilos and I think I'll just make it to 60 before the end. Getting out of the Mako and killing things on foot gives you more exp, so that helps.
TEoS
Man the completionist and ally achievements are driving me insane. Apparently it's 45 Assignments and 15 main quest objectives to get them. Some of them finish on the Normandy so they don't count towards the ally achievements, which I find supremely lame. I think I'm level 55 at the moment, looking for the keepers now, only 4 left. Voodoo
I finally hit level 60 but I had to start a third playthrough to do it. My max exp for 60 was a huge 862,100 points and it got to be a real grind towards the end. I got the completionist achievement during the second game but didn't get the ally ones I was going for, so I'm not sure what's up with that. Hardcore was a cake walk with my upper level soldier, so I can't imagine insanity will be much harder since high level soldiers are basically invincible with immunity, adrenaline burst and double frictionless materials on the AR. I've heard that some of the dialog changes on the insanity difficulty, but it's unconfirmed as of yet.

Voodoo
Is it true you can change your difficulty before the end of Eden Prime on a continued character so you can get the achievements for Hardcore/Insanity? Yeah, you can change it anytime up to the point where you hit the beacon. Make damn sure to keep a running save, though. I've heard that the game has a tendency to switch your difficulty on the auto save. People have completed the entire game on hardcore/insanity and not gotten the achievement because of this.
