Ok, I am thinking about buying The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. I have been starting to get interested in RPGs. I never really cared for them, not to mention my PC could not and can not handle them. But seeing as Oblivion is on the PS3, I am thinking about getting it. I just wanted to ask a few questions before I do though.

Will I still be able to enjoy it, despite the fact that I have never played any other games in this series?

I have basically only played Kingdom Hearts and Runescape, lol. Is this totally different to the point where I may not like it, or is it all in the same general idea?

Besides follow the main story and kill things, what is there to do? Can I just pop it in for 20 minutes just to f*ck around for a little bit?

Sorry, I am a RPG noob, but I love games where you can go anywhere, do anything, and I have heard this is like that. If there is anything I should know, just let me know.

I am also one of those people that really isn't to RPG's. But oblivion has to be one of the greatest RPG's I have ever played. The landscapes are stunning, the gameplay is brilliant. Everything about this game is awesome. The map is big, and there is a huge story/set of missions. Plus Betheda has had an extra year to perfect the PS3 version. Hands down I would recommend this game. Playing any of the previous games is not required since they take place in other parts of the land. This game recieved game of the year in a few different categories as well. Plop that money down. biggrin.gif

Definately buy this game. There's so much to explore it's almost ridiculous. And not only can you run around and kill things but you can kill them in style! Ex: using spells and casting them on people/animals. There are tons of missions to do and lots of side quests also. You can't go wrong.

Well, you guys make it sound all the more fun. I suppose I will pick it up this week. The no online play was making me lean towards a game that has it, but I guess online isn't everything.

One question though, that new expansion pack that is coming, is that a whole new game you must buy, or will I be able to download it via PS Store?

It has been said that the expansions will appear on the PSN just like the 360 versions, but they will appear later. This game can easily last 120hrs and thats if you do everything real fast and not completed all the way. This game has one solid single player mode. Hope you have fun. Maybe even a review so we know how well the PS3 version plays.

Just to back up what everyone else is saying, yes the content is downloadable, but when it comes out for the ps3 (atleast here, theyre saying it will already have the shivering isles on the disk)

And yes, this is the best RPG ever made, i absolutely love it! IMO Assassin/thief is the best route to follow, join the dark brotherhood! keep you occupied for hours.

If you're not really into RPGs and have never played an Elder Scrolls game before, I encourage you to stick with it. They do start off pretty slow and you might think it's crap, slow or boring, or you might be a bit overwhelmed as to what you should do (mostly because you can do anything you want) but keep at it.

Yeah. At first you think it's just going to tell you what to do and you do it, or that you can't leave the main story. I started playing a new game a couple weeks ago, I haven't even started doing the main story outside of the first sewer area, and I've played about 35 hours just exploring the forests and doing some side quests.

I also love how if you make another character with another race or class, that the game can be completely different in terms of combat.

Raindancer

Was going to make own thread on this. But might as well use the existing one.

The only RPG I have ever been into was Final Fantasy, but after 9. IMO they went down hill and are no longer fun to play.

I saw some video of gameplay on youtube and watched the PS3 trailer and must admit, I am very impressed by what I saw. I love open ended games and can see myself wasting many a month playing this game. Could somewhere point out what sorts of things can I get up to when no following the story line?

Is the world really as big as everyone says it is?

I also read if I kill a NPC. They will no longer be in the game (TRUE/FALSE)

Never played an RPG as in depth as runescape, I believe all games in this series have a completely different story line so your not missing anything.

I first got it for PC and had no idea what I was doing.

After a while you get it and it becomes an amazing game.

I will try and answer those the best that I can. I have had the game for about a month or so. I wouldn't call myself a pro, so if someone wants to add stuff, they can.

When not following the main storyline, you can do side quests to help people which usually get you a reward. Sometimes money, sometimes weapons and so on. You can just explore and look for new weapons, enemies and areas. You can join the guilds which have their own set of quests. There is an arena where you can fight to the death against other participants. This comes in handy for some quicks cash and experiance. You may also just want to become the grand champion. You can also watch fights at the arena and bet on who you think will win.

You can pick the locks on houses/stores at night and go inside and steal things. You can pickpocket people for any cash and items that they might be carrying. Keep in mind, if you get caught, you have to pay the fine or spend time in jail. Both at the expense of any stolen items you have on you. You can resist arest, in which case you must escape or kill the guard. If you decide to go to jail, you can serve your sentance or try to escape. If you have enough money, you can buy houses at different cities. You can add storage units or kitchen units or whatever.

The world is huge. Even by horse, it takes a while to get across the whole thing. You can always quick travel to any place that you have already been to. The time will change accordingly to how far you travel. Not every place is marked on the map from the start either. Some places you must find yourself to get them marked on the map. If you kill a NPC they are gone for good. I think there is an infinite ammount of monsters and enemies though. But if you kill a towns person, they are gone for good. And sometimes, other people will talk about how they heard that "so and so" was killed. There are certain people who can not be killed. These are people who are important to the main story and things like that. Most people can be killed though.

TheDude5000

Get Oblivion. Trust me. Easily one of the best games of last year, and one of the greatest RPG's ever. The storyline is easy to get into, I haven't owned any previous ES games either. I think the PS3 version already comes with all of the DLC including Knights Of The Nine, and Shivering Isles should show up on PSN soon.

Raindancer

I am heading down to Game in Chiswick at lunch to get myself a copy. I did think about getting it on the PC, but my girlfriend likes to hog the PC at night for her girlie website stuff.

Also, I know I will find out for myself tonight. How long does the days / nights last?

** UPDATE **

Where the hell did my evening go?

I got home from work, put the kids into bed and pulled round the sofa and stuck in the disc (They had no new copies at Game, so I brought a pre-owned disc)

Spent the first 20 minutes customising my character, then a further 5 minutes punching the wall and anything else I could hit. I took my time in the training level and eventually saw the king DIE and then made my way to the outside world, once outside I crossed the river to the ruins and entered the door. Spent a further hour or so just walking around and killing bandits and collecting everything I could carry. After I finished the ruins I picked a random direction and headed off. I found a couple of ruined castles and had a quick look around them, and then I glanced at my clock and noticed it was gone 1am and I had better get some sleep before work today. So here I am sitting in work and thinking about Oblivion.

One question I have though. On my journeys, I have picked up a lot of crap. Things like spoons / shovels / plates. Do these have any use?

Tonight I am going to head towards a town and catch up with some of the locals. Also, I cannot seem to find out how much gold I have, where is it?

Sorry for the poor image. The shovels and spoons are more likely garbage. The left column shows a picture of a coin, which is essentially the value of the item in coins. The feather is the weight of the item, sword is strength of item (for weapons or shields) and the heart is the health of the item, basically if the health of an item reaches low levels, it is less useful. For the gold amount, I think its in the menu that shows of your stats, class etc., I haven't played in months but for good reason. I am almost finished with Junior year and I have yet to finish my SATs and such. I uninstalled the game, saved my save files and gave all data of the game to my friends to keep me away from the game. As soon as school is out, me and my friends are playing this for hours and hours. Make sure you use an alarm clock because the game is immersive and time passes by really fast.

They are just crap items. They are there to add realism. You can mine in the game, but you don't need a pickaxe. But rumor has it that if you have a pickaxe with you, you will get better results when mining. Some people use the items to decorate their houses. Also, sometimes you may need them for quests, but they are easy to find, so I don't even bother wasting the space.

Grandthefter

i want this game, i had it - completed it. Gave it back, now i've realised that gamerscore isn't everything i want it back sad.gif But i'm not forking out full price for a game and then having to shell out even more for the expansion *sigh*

Anybody got any idea if in the future they're going to do deals with like money off the expansion if you buy the game? Like with a code or something?

Ronmar The Only

Remember if you steal stuff, you can only sell it to another thief. I dislike how they have done this but whatever. It would have been cooler if you just couldn't sell stolen stuff in the city you stole it from.

Also, don't fast travel unless you have played for over 10-20 in which you have traveled pretty much all over the map, or you are just wanting to do a quick mission. It is always best to travel by horse or foot.

Sixdust, in that image you posted, how did you get everything small, I have about 8 things before I have to scroll down. Is it a mod?

Google. That's where I got the image from. However I have had plenty of mods that have changed the things in the game.

Oblivion Mods

The best Oblivion map

Hope this helps.

The inventory in the screenshot looks like it's the BTmod - much better inventory than the original. There's also the DarNified UI which I use. I'd highly recommend using either of these as the original interface just doesn't work too well on the PC.

TheDude5000

That Kvatch rebuilt mod is pretty cool looking, if I ever buy the PC version I'm gonna check it out.

One question: Kvatch is always "destroyed", right? I mean, there's no point in the game where you can actually visit it, eh? I think you can skip your first objectives(going to the Priory and such) and go straight there, and begin the quest to shut down the particular Oblivion gate.

Yeah, it's always destroyed. I haven't tried out that Kvatch Rebuilt mod myself but it does look good.

All I can say about this game is that you NEED alot of time to be able to invest in it.

Being a full time worker and not really enjoying being couped up in my house all the time, Oblivion quickly lost interest to me. It seemed like I was spending weeks to finish even the beginner missions, simply because it took about 45 minutes to get anywhere and soak everything in.

Maybe I've just grown up too much.
