Mapping Liberty City (Laying Out Liberty City)

Recommended Posts

I don't think 16:9 or the screen has anything to do with it. What matters is that these Scottish developers are certainly building in a metric environment and the virtual space the map is built in is probably measured in integer kilometers.

With the map leak photo it's possible to remove lens distortion and get the true proportions of the map by knowing it's a 36"x24" poster (Imperial measure for the poster printed in America). The photo angle makes the map look slightly too short and so direct tracing is not accurate. The map is really about 7% taller than if you trace it from the photo.

The corrected map must fit in a box with integer kilometer proportions. If you go to 7x4 it's too tall to fit. It can't be 7x5 because it would be virtually the same size as San Andreas and they'd have been saying that. I think it's 6x4 because with the correct proportions the map best fits in that box. I don't remember where the 75% estimate came from but it may simply have been an exaggeration, thinking of interiors and subway tunnels and all the verticality.

6 by 4 , you got it AL......reason being..the leaked map had the black and white squares on the X and Y axis on the margins of the map. In SA, these were 1 k each. Extrapolating that 1K per square however on the GTA4 map was being to 'generous', I believe ( and Im sad enough to have worked out, they are around 750m to 800 m per square. This is a guesstimate, but one based on the night time 'panorama' image on the GTA4 website - and the size (estimated ) of the skyscrapers downtown.

The island the statue is on is half a square long - looking at the island though - on the GTA website - tells me that it is not 500 m long - it just is a little smaller, I say around 350 to 400m long. 6 by 4 is deffo near the actual size.

The grid squares printed on the map are arbitrary, I think. It's ten squares across and one axis is numbers and the other is letters. They're to make it easier to discuss locations in multiplayer, like meet me at coordinates D6. You could also name a street intersection but the grid coordinates could be useful too, particularly on the water.

i looked at the poster map and the copied fan made maps measured their lenghts and widths and factored in the angle of the camera from the original leaked map, i consistently got around a 1.56 ratio so i guess ur guys theory about the 6:4 ratio seems to be correct but it leaves a bit weary because the SA landmass was so square and IV landmass very odd shaped and with a map only 66% the size of SA we loose a lot of space from 08 LC weird shape so probably making it like anywhere between 60%-45% the landmass of SA, as u can see below. monocle.gif

thats a lot of wasted space lets just hope my old theory was correct but i think 6:4 is right after measuring and if that is right lets hope its dense as f*ck

Keep going ! It will help us figure the location of things and all icon14.gif

Ok tomorrow. smile.gif If anyone wants to help me with it, then pm me and I'll send you a Paint.net file or a good quality map in jpeg or other format. I'm making my pizza right now, so maybe I'll update it a bit today while eating it and waiting for the trailer. biggrin.gif Thanks for the feedback, I almost thought it was pointless to make it. alien.gif

Anyone have any idea what the narrow strips of land are between Algonquin and Broker/Dukes/Bohan are? They don't show up on the Subway map, more than likely meaningless chunks of land but it’s just something I noticed, along with the Broker Navy Yard, which might be interesting.

Those chunks? Probably thin pieces of marshland.

If anyone needs a higher resolution of my LC Map, just ask.

I do man. smile.gif Can you upload it somewhere?

Sure, I'm working on it now. Done.

Do you need it any bigger?

Edited by Grand Theft Auto Dude

Yeah I need as big as possible. biggrin.gif I wanna place buildings on it, so it have to be really big. Just use some uploading site so you don't have to worry about the size limit. wink.gif Thanks for the effort!

At a very high resolution, some small bugs in the map may become visible, but I will see how it turns out.

Ok thanks. icon14.gif Btw I spotted a mistake in your map. Look at the location where I marked the getalife building in the map with buildings, there is no street. You can tell that from the real map photo. Look here:
