Help Changing Radio Station Names

Recommended Posts

I just started modding GTAIII and decided to have a mess about with the radio stations (to get some music and a new feel into the game whilst driving around). I started with the radio stations first because i have a recording setup on my home computer for my guitar/vocals/band, and therefor used my editing program (Adobe Audition) to make my own radio station, which i called 'Metal Radio'. It consisted of bands like Sworn Enemy, In Flames, Chimaira, and Parkway Drive and i my own DJ segments between each song in case anyone was interested. Anyways the point of this post was to find out if there is a way to change the in-game text for the radio stations mainly.

To get my station into the game i just overwrote the GAME.wav with my station (keeping the same file format/settings).

1. Is there a way to change the text as you scroll through the stations in-game, for example making 'GAME FM' read 'METAL RADIO'?

2. Is there a way to change the paths the game reads for each station, so i can title the GAME.wav file as METAL.wav and it would play that?

I am currently using Adobe Audition 2 to edit the stations, and Adobe Photoshop CS2 for the texturing i have started to do.

Thanks for any help/adive you can give...

Hi and welcome to the forums.

I'm not at home with the files used in GTAIII but I'd say there is a gxt file somewhere. That file holds all the text that the game displays on the screen when you play the game. You'll need a GXT editor to open and edit it, you'll probably find one at GTAGarage. With it you open the gxt, search for the text you want tom change, e.g. Game FM and replace it with what you want, e.g. Metal Radio.

TNT's right - the GXT files are housed in the TEXT folder of your GTA3 directory. To edit them, you'll need the GXT Editor for GTA3 made by Jevon. The radio station names will be in the MAIN table, and their strings are just their names IIRC (so you shouldn't have any trouble finding them).

As with any modding endeavour, BACK UP YOUR ORIGINAL FILES FIRST! This can't be stressed enough - it'll save you a lot of potential hassles in the future.

GXT editing, however, will only change the radio station names in-game (at the top of the screen when you're driving). If you're interested, you can change the icons shown in the Audio menu of the game by editing one of the TXD files found in your GTA3\models\ folder (either frontend.txd or menu.txd IIRC) - it's just a nice personal touch. To edit those files, you'll need either G-TXD or TXD Workshop to get the textures, and then an image editor of some sort to change the textures.

As for changing the path to the radio station WAV - that's something that'd have to be changed through the EXE. If you know what you're doing, I don't think it'd be too difficult. But if not, then I don't think it's really worth worrying about because the amount of work you'd need to do would outweigh any real benefit. It's up to you though.
