'The Greatest Band Ever'

Recommended Posts

Everyone has a favorite band (or artist), something that every time they hear it it makes them want to climb onto the tallest building and declare their undying love for it to the world.

For me that band is Rush, every time I hear them I always wonder how it is possible for anyone to create such incredible music, yet alone for it to be so under-appreciated. I've met music fanatics who haven't even heard of Rush yet alone can comprehend how good they are and what wonderful musicians they are.

So what/who is it for you and why?

between Children Of Bodom and Cradle Of Filth for me

Bodom because just listen to Alexi Laiho he is f*cking amazing on his soloing and to be able to sing and play melody hook in a chorus (that is hard to do)

and cradle because i am sort of dark and i like the dark theme of cradle

I like any rock, but Staind, Nickelback, Hoobastank & Bush, are considered my favorites bands.

For me it's The Mars Volta. There are a f*ckload of bands I love to death, but I don't think any of them have created music I enjoy as much as theirs. The myriad of elements they use just suit my tastes perfectly. This was only re-enforced when I saw them live last week.

If I was around in the '70's, Pink Floyd would probably have won. Imagine seeing Careful With That Axe, One Of These Days or Echoes live. :aaa:

Similarly, if I was around in the '80's/early '90's, the Chili Peppers would probably have won. Blood Sugar Sex Magik is one of the best albums ever.

I could listen to music by The Offspring till the day I die. Same with the likes of Muse and Daft Punk. But knowing me, in 2 years I'll be onto something different. The only thing that has remained constant for me is The Offspring.

The Mars Volta are in Australia!?! sh*t, how did I miss that?

Favourite band: Either The Killers or Aerosmith. Probably leaning toward The Killers.

Nine Inch Nails and Marylin Manson probably do it for me. Some of the music they've written is just incredible, yet they're constantly written off as being "emo" or something.

Word, Offspring always kicks ass.

That +:

They're one of the few bands I know that can have their own sound and still never seem to be repetitive. They are a band in which each member has truely mastered their instrument, I think so at least.

Other then that my other two bands of choice would be Iron Maiden and Pink Floyd.

Rattlehead.

Megadeth are in my opinion the greatest band ever. I could go on for ages why but a few things would be the amount of quality songs they have churned out over the years, songs that contain excellent riffage & awesome soling. The members of the band through the years have been nothing short of pure class, masters of their instruments..notaby the amazing Marty Friedman and obviously thrash legend and pioneer Dave Mustaine

If Megadeth didn't exist there would be a void in my life and I would not be playing guitar, simple as that. smile.gif

Possibly an un-popular choice here, but Rammstein are at the moment and have been for some time my favorite band. I just love how their music sounds, and how it really conveys emotion. I also try my hardest to translate the songs so I get the real meanings instead of just mumbling random German words.

Also, Nirvana were an amazing band, along with System Of A Down, Marilyn Manson and Gorillaz.

Deep Purple.

Oh, man, how did I not f*cking think of the DP!

Also, Nirvana were an amazing band, along with System Of A Down, Marilyn Manson and Gorillaz.

Also, kind of lame to see Manson grouped up with those. sad.gif Not saying they're not all terrific bands (thought I never cared much for Nirvana), I think Manson's musical genius puts him on a higher plateau.

SagaciousKJB plays his Portrait of an American Family cd

EDIT

Holy f*cking crapsticks, I can't believe I forgot Mindless Self Indulgence. If Manson is on a higher plateau than those other bands, then Mindless Self Indulgence is in f*cking orbit or something.

The Clash.

I love everything they ever put out, even Cut the Crap. I believe why I like them so much is because of the diversity in their music. They touched on lots of genres, when most bands from that scene were strictly one type. Also, the lyrics really draw me too them as well. I think Joe Strummer was one of the best lyricists ever. His solo work with the mescaleros is also up towards the top of my overall band list. Good stuff I'm thinking.

Well, that's exactly what I was going to write. The diversity of their sound and the lyrics are why I'd say they're my favorite band as well. The lyrics actually have substance and are still punkish but their music has a really wide appeal unlike most of their peers.

Although I could reel off plenty of bands that I love, I don't think I could justify calling them 'The Greatest Band Ever'. That is, except The Mars Volta, they've got a certain substance to their music that simply puts them ahead of many other bands. I really believe that in 20 years, they will be looked upon in the way Pink Floyd is today.

Slint made my favorite album but I wouldn't call them my favorite band. Probably the Pixies or Unwound in terms of overall output.

My music taste changes all the time, so there really is no 'greatest band ever' for me. One month i'll be really into rap, thinking Eminem is the best ever, then the next nu metal etc etc. At the moment, my favourite bands are Linkin Park and Fort Minor.

I pretty much agree with twang. All those bands he listed have stood out for me as creative, with a constant measure of skill in their works.

But above all is Pink Floyd. Nothing I've listened to has come close to what they achieved; a tad overrated in some aspects, but equally underrated in various others (The Final Cut is incredible).

AGREED! Atom Heart Mother is practically unheard of, yet it's a masterpiece.
