Using the Xbox 360 Controller

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I wasn't quite sure whether to post this in the Troubleshooting forum or here, but since this is PC related and it's not exactly Troubleshooting I decided on here, if it's in the wrong forum please feel free to move it.

Anyway, does anybody have any idea how I can get my wired Xbox 360 controller to work with my San Andreas for PC? I've tried many methods and known have come to any avail, has anybody successfully managed to do this? Could you please tell me how? In San Andreas "Redefine Controls" section it does not detect movement from the analogue sticks, D-Pad or triggers of the 360 controller.

Thank you. smile.gif

Haven't had much luck with it, but try dling a program called "SA Direct Control" or something, it's supposed to enhance your 360 controller for interaction with SA.

For me, CJ kept walking in one direction sometimes and I couldn't stop him, weird. But the only reason I really wanted the controller was to be able to just walk at normal speed, not running which isn't really too easy to do with a keyboard, but quite easy to do with an analog stick and that works, when CJ isn't running like a nutjob in one direction and I can't stop him.

But if you really wanna play the entire game with the 360 gamepad, try that program I mentioned, and hopefully someone else here can shed some more light on the problem.

I wouldn't know about the x-box 360 controller for GTA SA but I do know I spliced up my regular X-box controller to a usb cord to play with it on the PC and I never have problems with any game I play they automaticly configures it. My thought is even though the 360 controller comes made for pc interaction it really sucks and the x-box controller has the same amount of buttons if you have the one with 2 black and 2 white buttons. but I bet if you find the updated drivers for it you can probably play it. just my opinion.

bananaman_8_U

you're in luck, because i know exactly how to do this biggrin.gif

i use my regular xbox controller controller, but i doubt that a 360 controller would make any difference.

i used an FAQ on how to do the soldering and set it up and everything. check this page for a step-by-step on everything:xbox controller mod

this allows you to get it working as a functioning gamepad in Windows, but (from my experience at least) GTA:SA will only use the left joystick. to enable the second one as well as the D-pad, you should download the "San andreas Advanced Control" (SAAC) mod that TheDude 5000 was refering to. that's what i use and it works great.

the only thing that i cannot figure out is (on my system) i cant buy food at any resturants whenever i use the controller. so once CJ gets hungry i gotta save, restart SA, disable gamepad, go to resturant using my keyboard, buy food, save, restart, enable joypad and continue playing. JUST TO GET A BURGER!!

hopefully, this won't happen to you...

Thanks for your post bananaman, but the hyper link is not working.

I'm also planning to buy a gamepad, but I can't buy just any gamepad because I own a Vista system. I know xbox 360 controller works with Vista, but I'm hearing so many negative reviews about the controller software and driver I'm not sure if its the right thing. I'm hoping this thread would clear few things up for me. whatsthat.gif

idk why the link isn't working...whatever.

here's the adress, you'll just have to suck it up and copy it to the adress bar. wink.gif

BTW, from what i can gather on Vista, it's still pretty shaky right now and has quite a bit of extra work involved in getting everything to work right after upgrading from XP. either wait several months for Vista to get it together, or install it in a dual boot mode so you can alternate between Vista and XP.

yep. Vista is really shaky. It crashes San Andreas regularly and when I double click the San Andreas icon (gta_sa.exe) it keep asking me to authorize for an installation. But for my defense, it came with the dell discount deal. eh, so much for trying to save few bucks I guess.

anyways, link is still dead. Sorry.

I even googled it and even google can't fine it!

p.s.

Is it just me who can't excess the link? confused.gif ah, I really want a gamepad. Its impossible to control airplanes without one. suicidal.gif

Link is broken (404 not found error) here as well, and Vista sucks.

Still, if you think you're gonna use a gamepad for other games, I advise you buy one. I bought one just so I could play on my N64 emulator the same way I did with the original console, and I ended up using it for other games as well (racing games mostly). I don't use it to play GTA:SA because I feel like I have more control with a keyboard and a mouse for this kind of game. And flying is easy after you get the hang of it =)

Buy a cheap Vista-compatible gamepad and you're done.

just fyi - the xbox controller is not only just frustrating in every way compared to ps2 or lagitech gamepads, but The xbox controller fails in a big way on GTA.

The problem lies in those godaweful black and white buttons. They become look left/right and airplane rudder left/right. The PS2 controller is perfect with its 2nd shoulder buttons. Further proof that microsoft will always screw you somehow

I guess so. I will just buy Xbox 360 controller and cross my fingers that Microsoft will update their drivers soon. God, why doesn't Microsoft believe in humanity?

You people shouldn't get Vista now, it's still pretty raw. My dad told me today that he might buy me a new computer on July or so, and he said "Maybe I'll get Vista for it". My reply was "Thanks, dad, but I want a computer that actually works, and not only looks good".

On topic: did I mention that there are several different gamepads out there, with tons of different layouts? It's up to you to find the one that suits you better. I like small gamepads as I have really small and thin hands.

wow, thanks for that tip. almost went out and bought xbox 360 controller.

Anyways, I did little googling, and figured buying cheap used logitech dual action gamepad from ebay might be the best idea. I looked through the logitech forum and didn't find compatibility problem with Vista.

Well, only thing i have to do now is to bid like crazy on ebay. Wish me luck.

  • 2 weeks later...

I used a program called joytokey (all one word)

http://www.electracode.com/4/joy2key/JoyTo...h%20Version.htm

I got this controller to play morrowind for the most part, so that explains the next thing I did.

I actually use the morrowind profile that I downloaded from somewhere (I'm sorry I don't remember where) and that sort of works for me. I just can't seem to program the d-pad or the triggers. I can use the right analog stick just fine because I run the game with the keyboard and mouse settings even though in fact I am using a controller. My main gripe is I can't program the left and right triggers for look left and right. I'm not a fan of the triggers being accelerate and brake. Sorry, I always played the PS2 versions of GTA games, Xbox really screwed the control system up. I'm not looking forwar to GTA IV on the 360 because of that. I may actually buy a PS3 for GTA IV only.

To Boxcutter, Brusifer was referring to the ORIGINAL xbox controller, not the 360 controller when he mentioned the black and white buttons. On the 360 controller they are replaced by the left and right triggers. I'm sorry he dissuaded you because of mis-information.

However the simplest solution is the Game Elements recoil pad that Rockroc mentioned. I have that as well, I actually bought it about 2 years ago. My problem with that gamepad, and my friend nought the same pad and has the same problems, is that CJ tends to walk in circles because this particular controller is very touchy. Needless to say, hauling ass on an NRG-500 only to suddenly be swerved into an oncoming semi by absolutely no fault of your own is enough to try any other gamepad. I'm also not able to program the d-pad on this controller, so with a game like San Andreas, you're going to be using the keyboard in awkward moments because of this. The plus side is, you don't have to downlad any extra software to make it half-ass work...nope, it does that well enough on its own.

You Xbox 360 controller owners should try this: http://xbcd360guide.50webs.com/index.html

Been using this for all my games and its awesome imo.

With this thing you can asign the d-pad to buttons and it makes the controller work better than with the default windows drivers.

i have downloaded that, but i dont know how to make the button line up with game play if you know what i mean

Just do it in the in game config after applying this config bellow.

Just copy/paste this in a txt file, save and rename the extention to xgi, then in the XBCD setup Open it and Apply.

[Gamepad]DevType=5LStickDZ=0RStickDZ=0BThreshold=10TThreshold=10AThreshold=255AxesOn=9LAFactor=255RAFactor=255NButtons=16LStickFull=1RStickFull=1AxesScale=64646464646464Layouts=3Profile0=0D0F100E0A090B0C0203010407080506191A1C1B1D1E2423Profile1=1B1C191A0A090B0C0203010407080506100E0F0D1D1E2423Profile2=27292A280A090B0C0203010407080506191A1C1B1D1E2423

Oh yeah, the XBCD Setup utility gotta be opened otherwise its the normal XB360 control layout that is.

After that, all you have to do is set it up as you want in game.

I find that the Logitech Dual-action works exactly like the PS2 contoller on the PC if you use Logitech's profile tool. I set up start as the "esc" key and the d-pad as "Y" "N" "G" and "H" keys. Then in SA's key setup, I swap the sholder buttons (L1 to L2, R1 to R2), move crouch and horn to L3, sub-mission and look back to R3, and swap circle and square. There may be a few minor tweeks and differences I didn't list (like zoom in and out are on square and X instead of L2 and R2), but it works great. If you ever need greater control, go to the options quickly and swich to keyboard+mouse control and use the mouse, then switch back when you want to drive, lock-on, or fly. I also did this for III and VC.
