Lost GTA IV Hints From The Past Found

Recommended Posts

I've been working on this little article all week. Let me explain to you how this goes...

Back in December of 2004, everyone was playing San Andreas on PS2 and having a lot of fun. At that same time, I received a magazine issue in the mail and there was an interview inside with Sam Houser, President of Rockstar Games. To my surprise, I didn't see anything online about it, so I posted news on my website (still in 2004).

From the news I posted, one thing that every single gaming and GTA fan site seemed to copy was this:

---------------

When asked about an online version of GTA, Houser mentioned that he might look to games like Everquest for inspiration.

---------------

You can view that little EverQuest reference on "fact sheet" pages on GTA IV fan sites now as well as forums across the web...and it might be in the same wording.

The point is...no one but me apparently decided to post the rest of the very, very interesting interview online. I lost the magazine, but I re-bought the issue from eBay earlier this week.

I began to take small fragments from the interview and I put quotations around some of Houser's answers into Google to see if I could find a website where someone transcribed any of it, but no one did...

So now I present to you a very revealing article (some about GTA IV...some answering burning Rockstar questions) written by myself with quotes used from the lost interview from the past that has been found.

It is called "The Second Leap" which refers to the second console generational leap since the beginning of GTA...the first leap being from GTA2 to GTA III.

Enjoy.

Side Note: Please notify me if you find any factual errors in the article and I will fix them promptly. Posting "lol" followed by you making fun of me for getting one thing wrong doesn't help out.

i did not have any problems playing multiplayer on gta stories

i have some of the most fun playing it with my brother

So, the leap from where we are now to next generation gaming will be as big as the transition from 2D to 3D? Sounds great, I was expecting an advance of such magnitude. I'm sure Rockstar will spoil us with this game.

Very good article Jordan. Thanks for putting it together, made a nice read.

I rated the topic good because it's a nice article. Nothing I didn't know, however.

I assume that Dan Houser might use the internet mostly for updates, because he's determined it won't be deathmatches.

I really like the GTA2/3 transition screen. cool.gif Gives me goosebumps thinking how revolutionary this next one will be!

Great stuff, Jordan.

GTA is a game that has the potential to just keep getting better over time. There's so many ways to go about multiplayer with such a world, it's really exciting to see what they'll do. But for the love of god, don't let it be as addictive and consuming as Everquest or WoW. I don't want to be sh*tting in a bucket in front of the tv whilst eating chicken drumsticks from another bucket.. tounge.gif

Having subscribed to Game Informer since 2004 and buying every single issue of EGM since June 2004, and having read up on countless gaming sites, it's no suprise that all of those Houser comments aren't new to me.

But I did forget about them...and now it seems online will be the new revolution for GTA, as was 3D with GTA 3.

Though a great online component is great(have my 360 here, XB Live Gold subscription, and a very stable connection), I hope this doesn't totally ruin the Single Player component. For all we know there might not even be a Single Player component in GTA IV.

Let's hope the trailer sheds more light on this.

Thanks, Jordan.

This is not necessarily just good news. While I've nothing against online multiplayer mode, this might mean R* isn't gonna give the poor AI such an overhaul everyone's been asking for. After all, the online stuff will keep 'em happy - right? Let's hope that isn't the case...

Dan said little something about how that "wouldn't be GTA". Plus I sure hope to Alah, Athena, Apollo... all the way to Zews that you're wrong. Just because you have an awesome job and can afford all this plus additional missions doesn't mean all GTA fans can both have an XB internet access and pay for that. And even if I was Donald Trump I wouldn't feel like playing GTA online all the time, maybe even never as I didn't play GTAs so far online though I could with mods.

TheDude5000

Well you see, I really hope it's a Single Player game with multiplayer component. I hope the online component doesn't take up the whole thing. Why? Yeah, sure I have XB Live, but I still want a real GTA game, not an MMO or something.

Of course they might combine online and offline in a way we haven't seen before, that still allows it to be a mostly Single Player game, who knows.

Impressive work, Jordan!

Appreciate your dedication to GTA and to this forum.

Interesting stuff about the removed character, something I didn't know.

I agree with the most of you when it comes to the balance between SP and MP.

I hope that MP wouldn't undermine the quality of SP.

TheDude5000

I'm all for a revolutionary game, but we haven't had a new state/city GTA since 2004. I want a new state/city or whatever, and to have actual missions and storyline and all that. I want a good online component, but I definitely don't want GTA:MMO just yet. APB is in development, that seems good enough. Let's just explore a new state or city in the same GTA universe, it's been almost 3 years since we've done that (SA).

Hey what about this:

Anyone remember Driver 4's removed online features? Well they were very seamless with the single player game. For example, in single player, you could drive to a race on the map. All of a sudden, you would connect to XB Live, and a lobby would form and players would join, and you'd race online. When the race is over, you go back to doing stuff in single player or whatever. Seamless online play integration like that might be what they were hinting at.

But let's not jump to conclusions, let's just wait for the trailer. We should know by then what kind of game we're dealing with.

To me it seems more like the "everquest" type game would be referring to something along the lines of APB. Rockstar has viewed Saints Row MP and how that was carried out, I believe it will be the same except maybe with the inclusion of story and free-roam co-op and a lot more fighting modes.

Has L.A. Noire been announced for the 360 yet?

Im in agreeance* with TheDude5000 they should incorperate online play into the game some how in which you still have lots of fun playing the single player. It would be pretty stupid if you just picked up the game, and headed straight to the multiplayer option of the game, without ever playing through the story.

Very nice job Jordan, going into detail with teh interview. I have read it numerous times, but I guss the part about online being a new trasition always skipped my mind. icon14.gif

I found the January 2005 issue of Game Informer. There was a great and long interview there with Sam Houser.

Ebay link (5 USD), Bronx, NY

Someone has to buy it. It would be best if Jordan did. Or someone from New York biggrin.gif . And then retype the interview into here so we can talk about something. The interview talks about the new GTA engine for the PS3 I believe.
