I'm sorry but how can people not believe in God?

Um yo, I'm not the only one doing the antagonizing here. It's goes both ways. I'm just stating what I believe and what I feel is the truth, I think any other idea is absurd, if you're so insecure about your own beliefs that this gets to you then just leave, I don't want to nanny anyone.

thats all well and good, but when you posted this topic, you forgot to relise that we like to f*ck with people.

(@MadeInThe80s) No, you are not merely stating what you believe. If that were merely your intent, you wouldn’t still be posting in this thread.

You have not so much stepped over as leaped over the line between discussion and trolling. Every subsequent post by yourself makes such a fact more transparent.

This isn’t GenChat and the PGC is now closed. Please don’t attempt to conduct yourself here as if it were the contrary.

There’s a very good reason why D&D was set up in the first place and your endeavours do nothing to add to this.

(@richard the pissed - please grow up. Even just a little bit would be nice smile.gif )

Thanks for the wonderfully constructive posts, fellas. Maybe when you return, you can continue the debate in the manner for which D&D was intended.

No more name calling, insults, or antagonising, thankyouverymuch.

Thanks Wheels. Things were getting out of hand.

Back on the general topic a bit. One of the major things I hear about Atheists is how they have no place to get their morals. Or how Christians assume we have no morals. That simply is not true. Many Atheists are very moral people who try not to bother any one else or kill in a god's name. And as far as where our morals come from if they're not from the Bible. There are many places to get morals. You get them from your parents, from your schooling, from the law, from your friends and neighbors. There are many sources of morals. And to go along with that there's one more thing I have to say for now.

Imagine there are three people who do good things all of their lives.

The first person does good things because (s)he believes that he or she will go to Heaven if he or she lead a good life.

The second person does good because he or she was threatened with eternity in hell if they were not good.

And the third person is good to everyone he or she meets simply because it's the right thing to do. Not because of any reward or fear of punishment. But simply because it's how you would want to be treated.

Which of those three people had the best intentions in life? I'd say the third guy without any hesitation.

Religion, higher power, spirituality. It is all a cover to hide the fear that death brings, its uncertainty.

Whether its Karmic resurrection, Christian redemption in heaven, Islams paradise I just don't think that this grand journey ends at death.

To me it seems like the greatest waste if it is. Because then their is no purpose for life, no reason to continue. Life might as well not exist.

In my opinion, Life and Death are intertwined.

If there is no God, then there is no purpose for existance. Because then Life would be enhancing something that essentially isn't real.

It's almost paradoxical.

Basically, this paradox requires me to belive in God or else I couldn't believe in anything at all.

I believe in God, but I don't always believe in Religion.

I most definitely concur. Unfortunately, not everybody has access to such factors and personal influences.

I guess that’s where the “just don’t give a f*ck” mentality stems from.

We all know people who claim not to give a damn about anything (and they are generally talking the biggest heap of sh!t ever), but there are people out there who simply don’t. We call them sociopaths and the world is increasingly full of them. War torn regions spit them out like the average politician spouts non-informative bullsh!t.

If you’ve personally seen your parents killed and your sister raped, chances are that your personal parameters of “morality” may differ from that of those who have not undergone such cognitive and physical trauma.

Religion and concepts of heaven and hell probably won’t provide much solace to those who have been through, or are currently going through such experiences.

How is one supposed to grasp the concepts of right and wrong when one’s world has been turned upside down?

Sometimes reality can really kick comfortable ivory tower philosophical debates square in the nads wink.gif

What gives me morals is that feeling knowing that you're either doing right or wrong. I believe that feeling is my soul.

It's always such a guilty pleasure reading one of Mortukai's replies to topics like this.

Anyways, at the risk of rehashing the points made by others, here's my take on the question:

We are living examples of God's work yet people refuse to believe in a "creator" and that we were formed from molecules over billions of years. Even if that were true, who created the matter which formed us today?

I'm assuming you are asking about not just matter, but the origin of everything, including whatever matter might have come from.

Simply put, we don't have a good answer to this question yet, and in all likelihood we'll never be able to answer the question completely, however close we may eventually get. We have pretty good theories about what happened during even the first few milliseconds of the universe's existence, backed up by some pretty good evidence, but the fundamental issue of something being created out of nothing is a conundrum unanswered by science. Some physicists speculate about symmetry-breaking or multidimensional M-branes prompting the fantastic explosion from which we think the universe originated, but these theories cannot answer the logical question "so, where did those precursor things (supersymmetry, M-branes) come from?"

We have very good theories about the origins of matter and the fabric of spacetime, but with regard to origin of "everything", the answer is still "we don't know". The mark of a scientist is being able to admit when she doesn't know something, and then doggedly pursuing whatever lines of evidence she can until she can expand her knowledge and create testable theories.

Bear in mind that religion does no better with the question. The typical answer is "God created everything", but that prompts the natural follow-up question "then who created God?" There are three answers to this that I know of, and two of them are problematic:

A) God created himself along with the rest of the universe. This answer sucks. Hard. If God created himself, it implies that at some point he didn't exist, and then that thing which didn't exist yet magically created itself. Some people argue that violating all semblance of logic is one of God's powers, but this argument basically boils down to "oo, stop thinking, it's magic!"

B) God has always existed. This answer avoids the question of origin entirely, but it still doesn't explain existence. Even if something doesn't have a starting point, it is still reasonable to ask "how is it that this thing exists?" Saying he's always existed doesn't answer the question.

C) God is too mysterious for us tiny humans to understand. AKA, "we don't know".

Picking the third answer basically means admitting that the religious explanation gets you no farther ahead than the scientific one. There are many reasons why people believe in God, but pointing out that scientists can't explain something coming from nothing isn't a good one--the religious crowd can't explain it either.

Do my points and ideas just suck? I must just be incoherent...

jheath, I would tend to agree with choice C.

But written as: Humans probably cannot comprehend the true origin. But I believe we can elevate ourselves to a point of understanding.

So far, the farthest back we can go in understanding Science and Religion and have them agree is the Big Bang. In this single defining moment, there is agreement.

I believe that is key. It means the Big Bang is truly an event to be marked. What happens before it happens outside the realm of our dimension. Maybe a sort of dimensional mytosis.

Now people who say they don't believe in God please run my previous post through your head and offer some continued debate if you want.

By saying that there was a big bang goes completely against the bible which is wrong.

The Big Bang is mentioned in the Bible, if you except that parts of Genesis, if not all: is metaphoric.

And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.

God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness.

God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

Let there be light...

Now if you were to witness a massive explosion, beyond the scale of anything ever witnessed by man, a big bang if you will... how would you even possibly describe it?

I personally would call it light. A light that was so piercing, it utterly shattered the perception of reality. Like the breathing of a person on life support, existence came in "days" between being knocked out and seeing that infinite light. Periods of time where the mechanics of light are undefinable.

We do not know how long the first 3 of these Days of Creation are. Why? Because there was no sun. And the sun was created to measure time.

Yes but the big bang theory also involves evolution of life over billions of years when the bible has it that the earth is only about 6000 years old.

Though "Let there be light" does sound to me like a big bang (possible) or maybe the sun being created.

Yes, just in case his creation turned out to be crap.

Which it did.

Which it did.

Oh yes indeed!

Other than faith and personal experience, there is no way to proof God's existence or lack of.

Arguments you hear from atheists, priests, the pope, religious people, etc, are just arguments ad ignorantiam.

It's amazing what people will say to make money, and even more amazing what people will believe. Sh*t, if I thought I could write a book and make millions off of religious fanatics like yourself, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
