What the hell? This sucks. I want to play a game, not feel like I'm in a real world with real people.

I seriously doubt this is for GTA4...

Umm... why? GTA is the series R* makes money on, and the technology has been around for long enough (I remember seeing some DMS animations at least a year ago).

Well, the game has been in development for over two years now (probably closer to four), and the press release says they've just been working together for "several months." For them to decide to trash all the existing animations and sub-systems and re-do everything this late doesn't make much sense. Even if they started learning the new tools/APIs/etc.. six months ago, that's still not much time to overhaul an engine, then optimize it and fix bugs. Given the sheer volume of moving things in GTA, there's probably also a year's worth of man hours involved in animating it all. And since the game ships in seven months or so, they really should have most of the assets in place for testing very soon...

You must be referring to this:

Rockstar’s integration of euphoria is well advanced, with today’s announcement following several months of close collaboration between the two companies.

So, apparently there's been several months of close collaboration between the companies - nothing is said about when the co-operation first started. For all we know, R* may have had the technology (or some of it) at their disposal for, say, two years. Also, if the animation system is taken care by euphoria, even "several months" (plus how much development time there's left) might well be enough given the resources of R* - especially if they're talking about six months to a year.

Besides, even though GTA IV has been in development for two or more years (AFAIK), there's a lot of things R* has been able to work on, other than the in-game animation:

• Choosing the location, theme, era, etc. and doing research on that.

• Creating the storyline.

• Creating the map.

• Creating the buildings, landscape, etc. in 3D.

• Creating mission scripts (although they are most likely tweaked during the testing).

• Creating the cutscenes (using the good ol' motion capture, perhaps).

• Creating the radio programmes.

...and so on

Also, experienced programmers/artists are able to learn new stuff surprisingly fast - especially things that are made to make game development easier.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if GTA IV already took advantage of euphoria.

What the hell? This sucks. I want to play a game, not feel like I'm in a real world with real people.

And how exactly does this info mean GTAIV will be ultra-realistic?

I guess you would rather have the characters do the same exact movement everytime they fall or get hit by a car, and you probably want them to have supersized heads and bright pastel cartoony colours too?

"Hey everyone, lets just start making up sh*t so we can complain about it."

Snake Without a Tongue

I gotta say, I watched those demonstration videos, and it didn't seem that profound to me. Maybe with skin attached it'd be more interesting.

Still, GTA will rock our asses off, I just know it.

I suggest that this extERmely interesting discussion come to an end. Anybody care to speculate what new mission types, or different ways to do things can be implemented in GTA, thanks to this new engine?

Maybe you could try to push dudes against some trap triggers or something in stealth missions to avoid them (if they had traps).

I suggest that this extERmely interesting discussion come to an end.

Finally, a sane person.

Anybody care to speculate what new mission types, or different ways to do things can be implemented in GTA, thanks to this new engine?

Hmmmm, im going to go out on a limb and just say the first thing that comes to mind, and that is "Location-specific-damage" or "LSD", [email protected] sorry.

Anyway, how about a mission where you "...go make sure pauly dont write no more checks, capiche?"

You go, and shoot pauly.

In the face.

Hes dead, you f*cked up.

Try again.

You go shoot pauly.

In the hand.

Go back to the mission starter, only to find out pauly is left-handed.

You shot him in the right hand.

You f*cked up again.

Try again.

By watching his actions, (handshakes, shooting, etc.) you see that pauly is indeed left-handed (it wouldve been easier to do watch his actions in the first place, if you did, you wouldnt have had to try the mission this many times)

Walk up to pauly, shoot (or stab, or smash, its really up to you) his correct hand, and ta-da! Mission complete.

Or you could just cut both his hands off and call it a day.

I dont know, just the first thing i thought of.

EDIT- Actually, most of the things we will probably think of could be done without this engine, so yeah.

I'm just imagining all the cool ways peds are going to fly off my bonnet when I hit them.

And the fist fights are going to be great.

Actually, most of the things we will probably think of could be done without this engine, so yeah.

I find your LSD idea very intriguing; but you're right, the scope of our (players') imagination seems to be limited by what we've already seen.

For instance, I thought how fatigue, and having to carry heavy weapons around when tired could play a role in game design----but then I realized that getting tired, not being high on a certain stat., not being able to run or jump around with heavy weapons etc. already bears on how one does missions.

Still we might try to think of new mission types. I firmly believe that if GTA IV purports to make as big a brakthrough as the leap from GTA 2 to III, then it has to introduce some exciting new ways of 'doing stuff'.

Basically there are a few parameters the combinations of which yield the missions in GTA. Variations on formulae such as checkpoint-collecting, assasination, racing, chasing, etc. get embedded in different storyline contexts so as to give a somewhat 'fresh' experience each time.

Yet R* have been using those variations for, what, 10+ games now. I suspect that thanks to the new resources of these engines, they'll introduce some truly new 'parameters' with which to make up new missions.

What these could be we could perhaps try to speculate; but it's too difficult, I guess....

Yeah, I know, all your ideas that youve come up with are so much better. bored.gif

Just playin'

But seriously, come up with something better.

Because im not really a programmer nor do i really have much of an idea of how this particular engine would relate to special mission objectives and such.

At least i was a bit more creative than if i were to say "well, you could hit people with your car and it would look cool..."

Here's a new parameter: pleasing. You have captured an enemy and you have to please your boss. So you start shooting at the enemys feet in order to make him dance. You have to do this well enough to please the boss and fill the meter and pass the mission and celebrate. Geniusism at it's purest.

I like the idea too. Reminds me of the 'scare-o-meter' in SA. So yes, perhaps we could get new gauges like that this time.

smile.gif Sorry, it's just, I don't think this is really somthing that will have specific missions based on it.

The technology is central to the gameplay mechanics, so in a way it will improve all of the traditional style GTA missions.

Be it driving vehicles; where peds react differently to scramble out of your way, or get sent flying.

Or hand-to-hand combat with enemies getting punched and kicked though the air. One of the demo videos on the NaturalMotion site showed how a 'person' was having a sudden force applied to them ie. being punched, and showed how they could model how they are put off ballance and stagger to stay upright, all calculated in real time.

Then with gunfights there's the physics involved with getting shot from say a shotgun, or being blown up.

Perhaps peds could intelligently take cover behind objects.... maybe that isn't covered by this engine, but I think something like it would be entirely possible.

Well, the victim would obviously "dance" dynamically, according to where you shoot.

How about the following implementations:

• Push someone down the stairs, to make his death look like an accident. Or just for fun.

• Catch someone (a snitch, a thief, an escaping witness...) by tackling him/her.

• Pick up and carry stuff realistically (a beach ball is easy to pick up, whereas a crate full of guns is really hard to lift).

• Human bowling: push something heavy (a wheelchair and some poor bastard sitting in it moto_whistle.gif) downhill, trying to knock down pedestrians.
