About NaturalMotion Ltd

NaturalMotion Ltd is the creator of Dynamic Motion Synthesis (DMS), a break-through in 3D character animation. Based on Oxford University research, Dynamic Motion Synthesis creates high-quality 3D character animation in real time by combining artificial intelligence, biomechanics, and dynamics simulation.

NaturalMotion's first product, endorphin, utilises this approach to dramatically accelerate the production of offline 3D character animation.

In March 2006, NaturalMotion announced euphoria, which brings Dynamic Motion Synthesis live onto Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. euphoria is able to create truly unique game moments, which never happened before, and will never happen again - just like real life. We believe this is the biggest revolution in games since the introduction of 3D graphics.

NaturalMotion's third product, morpheme, is an advanced animation engine and powerful auhoring tool chain. For the first time, animators have total control over the look of their animations in-game, resulting in dramatically increased in-game animation quality.

Based in Oxford (England) and San Fransico (California), NaturalMotion markets, sells and supports its products globally to customers in the games, film, post production and broadcast markets.

About it not being for GTA IV I think its possible. Its also possible RAGE isnt used for GTA IV. I think we will find out soon.

But since this is an addon for the game engine then maybe it will be in GTA IV. Rockstar are known for keeping quiet and who knows how long Rockstar have worked with this addon.

Anouncement from march 2006:

LUCASARTS AND INDIANA JONES®

WHIP INTERACTIVE

ENTERTAINMENT FORWARD WITH

GROUNDBREAKING EUPHORIA

TECHNOLOGY FROM

NATURALMOTION LTD.

ALL IN-GAME CHARACTERS ACT LIKE REAL PEOPLE WITH THIS

REVOLUTION IN BEHAVIORAL SIMULATION, ENSURING A

DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE EVERY TIME YOU PLAY

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – April 27, 2006 – LucasArts announced today that Indiana Jones’ first

expedition on Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and

PlayStation®3 will feature the revolutionary euphoria behavioral-simulation engine from

NaturalMotion Ltd., creators of the award-winning Dynamic Motion Synthesis (DMS)

technology.

For the first time ever, euphoria enables interactive characters – from Indiana Jones

himself to the foes he pulverizes – to move, act and even think like actual human beings without

the limitations of traditional animation. Characters move and adapt realistically to their given

situations on the fly, resulting in a series of experiences and payoffs that will never be the same

twice. As one of only two publishers with early access to the technology, LucasArts is well

advanced in integrating euphoria into Indiana Jones’ 2007 next-generation adventure.

Imagine a swaying rope bridge. With euphoria in action, characters visibly attempt to balance

themselves, their feet stumbling, their arms flailing, and their hands reaching for security as the

unpredictable movements of the bridge threaten to send them plummeting to their doom. Perhaps

they all survive. Perhaps they all fall. The use of euphoria means the action isn’t scripted – it’s

simulated – so you’ll never be able to predict exactly what will happen, no matter how many

times you’ve experienced a certain scenario.

“With euphoria, A.I. drives character behaviors so that there’s a different payoff every time. The

depth of this character interaction gives us true next-gen gameplay that you simply couldn’t do

with earlier generations of hardware,” said Peter Hirschmann, vice president of product

development at LucasArts. “We’ve been working with NaturalMotion since 2004 to help bring

their groundbreaking technology to games, and there’s no better character to demonstrate it than

Indiana Jones.”

“We have big plans for euphoria, and we are absolutely thrilled to be able to show it off in the

first next-generation release from LucasArts,” said Torsten Reil, CEO of NaturalMotion.

“LucasArts is an excellent partner with a real passion to raise the bar for next-gen games, and we

look forward to working with them to apply euphoria technology to its games for years to come.”

I think I understand how Rockstar wants to do this. NPCs wont be scripted anymore. They will each have a mind of his own.

Only question now is: will it be in GTA IV already?

Those games didn't have Euphoria. They merely had ragdoll physics.

The engine used was the Source Engine.

I seriously doubt this is for GTA4...

Umm... why? GTA is the series R* makes money on, and the technology has been around for long enough (I remember seeing some DMS animations at least a year ago).

"Two publishers"? What's the other one? R*?

Okay, i am sceptical that it will be in GTA:IV. They couldve been having talks about their partnership or other newwer games during those seven months.

I hope for GTA's sake that theyre using it. Although im sceptical about it im excited for the posibilities it would open up... where would they draw the line at all of this destructable stuf though, they would have to draw the line somewere...

This is the first official news (we think) for GTA IV in months, RATE THIS TOPIC AS GOOD so it is recognized among all of the speculative threads!

NaturalMotion, the award-winning developer of 3D animation technology based on Dynamic Motion Synthesis (DMS), today announced a partnership with Rockstar Games, the world-renowned publishing label, to integrate NaturalMotion’s revolutionary euphoria engine into upcoming next-generation Rockstar Games titles. Rockstar’s integration of euphoria is well advanced, with today’s announcement following several months of close collaboration between the two companies.

Based on NaturalMotion’s DMS technology, euphoria uses the processing power of PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 to simulate the human body and motor nervous system, thus creating fully interactive game characters that act differently every time. With euphoria, games move away from canned animation, towards a much richer, life-like experience that is unique to the player.

“euphoria is about giving people an interactive experience they have never seen before. We now have the processing power to simulate humans, and the possibilities for games are endless,” said Torsten Reil, CEO of NaturalMotion. “In Rockstar, we have found a partner that shares this vision, and is renowned for creating some of the most ground-breaking and immersive games in the industry. We are thrilled and honored to work with a partner of such high caliber, and look forward to helping create amazing titles.”

NaturalMotion Ltd. is the first company to create 3D character animation software based on Dynamic Motion Synthesis (DMS), a technology that utilizes Adaptive Behaviors and artificial intelligence to simulate the human nervous system. Based on Oxford University research on the control of body movements, NaturalMotion’s euphoria synthesizes 3D character animation in real time on Playstation® 3, Xbox 360TM and PC, thus creating unique game moments and previously unachievable interactivity.

http://www.naturalmotion.com/files/nm_rockstar_2007.pdf

Edit: I just got personal confirmation that Rockstar approved this for NaturalMotion to give out, so it is not as if NaturalMotion decided to throw it online without approval, of course...

This is obviously going to be used for Grand Theft Auto IV. I have no doubt in my mind.

Nice find?

If R* can make good use of the possibilities opened up by this new engine, then, as many people here have already pointed out, we're in for a true breakthrough.

It's not really important how good the game looks, or how 'realistic' it behaves, as it were. The challenge, I think, is to make those advances integral to the gameplay so that they do not remain mere cosmetics. R* is fully capable of doing that, so there's reason to get excited! I predict that we'll be seeing new mission types, new ways to accomplish things, etc. etc. in the game, thanks to these new engines. Besides they're smart enough to know that they can't sell the "go there in x seconds, do that, come back" formulae for much longer.

Umm... why? GTA is the series R* makes money on, and the technology has been around for long enough (I remember seeing some DMS animations at least a year ago).

Well, the game has been in development for over two years now (probably closer to four), and the press release says they've just been working together for "several months." For them to decide to trash all the existing animations and sub-systems and re-do everything this late doesn't make much sense. Even if they started learning the new tools/APIs/etc.. six months ago, that's still not much time to overhaul an engine, then optimize it and fix bugs. Given the sheer volume of moving things in GTA, there's probably also a year's worth of man hours involved in animating it all. And since the game ships in seven months or so, they really should have most of the assets in place for testing very soon...

This is good for the Grand Theft Auto series as a whole rather then simply GTA4 as this may not be used for GTA4 but for future GTA's. This is also forgetting the other games Rockstar may be making or going to make that will use this technology.

Stefan.

Well, that is a very good find.

I seriously doubt Rockstar would put this into Grand Theft Auto IV, as even though they have been in partnership for months, the game has been in production since early 2005. Like usual, the first thing they would do is to make the engine and physics system. Since this is a physics system, for Rockstar to put this in, expect the game to be delayed to early 2008.

Anyway, you never know. Fingers crossed! smile.gif

Grand Theft Auto is Rockstar's flagship game, and it's possibly going to be the best selling game this year. We will have been waiting 3 years for this game come release day, and expectations are running unreasonably high. They are up against the wall with this game and they know that it has got to be a success. That's why I think this will be in GTA4. Pretty much everyone with a next-gen console will be buying this game, and Rockstar know that they have to impress us. They can't impress us with size as other games are bigger (Just Cause), they can't impress us with graphics because there are games set in smaller "worlds" that have incredible graphics, so the best way they can impress us is by showing us entirely new concepts in gameplay, taking things designed to be used in more linear games and putting it into GTA's open-ended world could well be the big step that sets this game apart from the previous trilogy. What's more, GTA games are well known for having terrible AI, so handing that portion of the game over to a group that seem to have made a huge advancement in AI in games sounds like a good idea. That's why I think it will be in GTA4, because after spending so much money on a thing like this you're going to want to put it in a game that will show off what you're capable of, and one that's sure to make a return on the investment.

And if it's not then I'll eat my hat. Shifty41s_beerhatsmilie2.gif
