Mark
Why don't you mate, I'm sure it's worth it ? Or did you want to do Aeronautical Engineering ? Naw the Masters I was doing in it meant I'd end up doing admin. I've been looking over the civvie side of the industry and most of it is actually admin. Tis a minefield for those that just wanna get involved with aircraft. I'm actually also thinking NCO Aircrew...or maybe Weapon Systems Officer, if not Pilot. We'll see. Not a lot of WSOp jobs that interest me you see..if they did, I'd have gone for em already lol. Winchman seems like a hoot though. Hell I might just hang about and wait til AMM Mechanical becomes available again.
Dr.pay'n spray
Meh happens. Worst one I've had is Easyjet coming into Toulouse, the pilot had to rapidly open the trottles just before touchdown cause we were marginal to even make it to the runway lol. Heavy landing too. Strangely, the landing on the flight back was the smoothest I've ever had! LOL, I think this wins for hard landing. Here. Actually...this is better. Ouch The last link is actually a clip from a beer commercial. In real life, the front landing gear would cave in.
*gta star*
@GTAuron - So the Master's degree that you took didn't really open the career prospects that you thought it would ?
92F
Spotted this while working in tool stores lastnight. 27mm dummy round for the Typhoon gun. --- --- And to give you an idea of the size of it:

Mark
@PaynSpray: Thanks for the heads up, thought it looked a bit nasty lol. @gta*: Aye yeah it wasn't working how I wanted it to. I wanna work on aircraft, not get stuck in admin @92F: Ouch, I've been the barrels and the trigger mechanisms they use in the Typhoons but never seen the rounds. f*ck, that'd make a nice hole in a Sukhoi or 2. It'd also make a nice present for the missus to spice up the bedroom lol. Edited March 17, 2007 by GTAuron

Mark
Meh, not that bad. My test results now last me for life so if I want I can go bugger off for about a year then try again but be almost all the way through the application stage already. Depends if I can get myself a job asap. Waitrose turned me down XD heheheh. Stupid firm.
*gta star*
What do they do, 'Waitrose', I take it's something to do with Aviation?
Mark
Never heard of Waitrose? They're a supermarket lol. I'm just looking for a standard job whilst my RAF application gets sorted.
*gta star*
Nope, not heard of it. I live in Manchester, never seen one of them stores around before. What exactly do you want to do in the RAF? Obviously there are more jobs than just pilots, there are Air Traffic Controllers etc. There are many jobs, but not necessarily payed very well, like a pilot only earns £30,950 per year. *gta star*
'AMM' ? Expand on that, please.
Mark
Tis the abbreviation applied to Aircraft Technician, Mechanical. I would Drew, but atm they're not looking for people. I might apply for pilot again for sh*ts n giggles, and just to waste time til AMM becomes available again. NCO aircrew seems fun overall, but there's no actual job I can see myself doing. Agh we'll see. I've got til Monday to ring up the AFCO with my answer. After my test score it's amazing how much they now bend over backwards for me. Meh if i get bored I might go for Weapons Technician.
92F
'AMM' ? Expand on that, please. Aircraft Maintenance Mechanic. I am highly tempted after a few years to go for NCO aircrew. I originally was going to join as a biff armourer, but kinda got swayed out of it by my dad and driving instructor. They made the same point of who wants an armourer for a civvie aircraft job. *gta star*
Oh right, like an Engineer for planes, 'Aeronautical ' is the name for it. I've got a letter to send to the Police Force enquiring about the Air Division, there's a possibility that you can fly with them.
Mark
Good luck, there's only a handful of pilots...less than the Navy has lol. You'll probably be working from an RAF base if you succeed lol. RAF Wyton for one has a police support heli flight. What job would you be looking at if you were NCO Aircrew drew?
*gta star*
Well, I've read through the letter and made sure that it's gramatically correct etc because it's going to be sent to a Chief Constable lol, so it's got to be formal and very well layed out. I shall send it on Monday.
Mark
Good luck mate. How exactly do you apply to the police service? Never really looked into it.
*gta star*
Hey, got a phone call today from the lady in the recruitment office in Manchester, representing Greater Manchester Police. She told me that I need to do 2 years as a Police Officer (on probation), then do another year and then apply for the division. She said the pilots of the Helicopters are usually Civilian, but it is still possible to become Co-Pilot and work your way to become a Captain. To answer your question, to apply for the Police Force, you have to be 18. Basically, you just go onto the website and fill in an application form, don't contact them, they will contact you. This is very important, as if you contact them, they will just throw your application away because you can't follow simple instructions, which is something that you need in the Police, obviously. Then your application will go through the process which takes 6 months, first thing, they receive your application and they do an initial papershift, then you take a fitness test and a medical test and a security/background check (to see whether you have any criminal offences, if you have, you won't get in, if they are serious). However, you also have to do a 'Role Play', where you are put into a situation and you are assessed on how you react. There are no actual weight or height restrictions, you must be physically and mentally be able to be put under pressure, no formal qualifications are required, but they are needed for certain sections of the Police (for example, Aviation, you will need Maths and English). The two Fitness tests are the 'Dynamic Strength Test' and the 'Mutli-Stage Fitness Test', more formerly known as the 'Bleep Test'. To pass this, you need to reach level 5.4 on the Bleep Test (which is really easy) and to pass the strength test, you need to be able to push 34kgs and pull 35kgs. Other factors for selection may include eysight, like it needs to be good, you must be also in a good financial status and must not have tatoos that are offensive and can be seen. Hope i've helped, more information is on this website, have a look; http://www.policecouldyou.co.uk/
Mark
Geez, 5.4? That it? I gotta reach 12 for NCO Aircrew lol. Hmm...sounds interesting LOL at the no contacting em bit, my dad would fail that. He wanted me to ring up like twice a week for any updates when I was applying for the RAF...arg lol. I rang up a few times when I myself was interested, mainly to see if they recieve my application by post etc. Right, less of discussion, more on videos! Who can't love Russian Technology? That sites awesome in general for pictures and videos.
*gta star*
Yeah, 5.4 is really easy to reach. It certinaly is interesting, glad I've helped btw. Had a look at some of the photos and watched that video, awesome stuff.
Mark
Oh! Just remembered I had this: LOL. I'm not a fanboy honest. XD. Hmm I swear lower year schoolkids can reach 5.4 with ease...meh. I spose you do see some fairly unfit police officers.
92F
Good luck, there's only a handful of pilots...less than the Navy has lol. You'll probably be working from an RAF base if you succeed lol. RAF Wyton for one has a police support heli flight. What job would you be looking at if you were NCO Aircrew drew? Ive always wanted to do something like air loadmaster. Thats if the trade still exists. 5.4 for the bleep test? Ive got a mate who has just finshed his police training and is now onto his probationary period. But from what he told me their general fitness had to be higher that what I am expected to do now. For my age I'm expected to to 9.10 on the bleep test and 35 sit ups/13 push ups in a minute. They did bring in an operational fitness test but it got binned due to health and safety reasons and due to injury. All it consisted of was lifting a 10,15 and 20kg sandbag onto a ledge of just over a metre(to simulate lifting an object onto the back of a 4 tonner) 30 shuttle runs carrying a 15kg sandbag(while wearing webbing, helmet and with the rifle slung across back) 20m sprint(again with webbing, helmet and rifle in the hands this time) then lepper crawling 10m(had to do more than 15 total in 5mins) then to simulate filling sandbags we had to shovel gravel(around a half ton maybe) through a hole the size of a dinner plate. We had 15mins to do that. I just wished I'd been able to join the RAF 10 years ago before all this pussy footing around sh*t and health and safety crap. Mark
Two most dangerous words in the english language them, health and saftey. Actually I'm now going for Crewman, which I assume to be Air Loadmaster. AMM Mech is still 2nd option though. Wow...this topic really just involves the 3 of us.. *gta star*
I know it does, come on people, surely there are more than 3 of us interested in Aviation ? Evidently from previous pages, keep this topic alive ! @92F - That's the information that I have been told by Police Recruitment Officer's that have came into my College, 5.4 on the Bleep test is a pass.
