[DRuG]NikT
Yeh thanks for the thread mate - as most would assume, I'm a bit of a plane fan. So many favourites for so many different reasons.. but lets start with overall sexiness, including finishing, decals etc.. My fave in that department would have to be the simple beauty of the blackbird - sooo typical of the 60s - they decide to make a supersonic jet, and nail it... with such beauty too... Modern times, I'm gonna suggest one that deserves credit on just about all their planes, but the trainers looks pure sex in Canada Colours... For the rest, it's gonna take me some thinking - but I gotta agree with the Antonov shuttle launcher/transporter... make sure you chek out the mod of it for flight sim, it's amazing. pinky
Nice topic. Here is one to spark debate about the largest aircraft in the world, Caspian Sea Monster. I was researching a ground effect aircraft from Metal Gear and got quite interested in these and the other ground effect aircraft built and in the pipeline. There most be something in it as the Americans have finally caught on and are starting on the Pelican. They are worth seeing on Youtube as well, something so large travelling so quick is strange to see. Try searching for "Ekranoplan", their Russian designation. Some people question the tactical advantage, how deos 1000 troops coming in at over 300MPH under the radar sound? And that is with the much smaller Orlyonock A90. Here is the missile armed anti sub Lun, only a little smaller than the KM. You will find that the Lun is also placemarked on Google Earth near an Orlyonock. It is mistakenly named as the Caspian Sea Monster, the title given to the KM. You would think they could have at least Googled it before naming it, idiots. Here is a good site for all things WIG, the WIG page. Edited February 23, 2007 by pinky
russificator
I love those Asian Aircraft that can go upto 120 Degrees while still going forward, I can't remember the name though... Yes. So called 'Pugachev's cobra'. Interesting in-flight manoevre. Wiki 1 Wiki 2 BTW. Today is the Russian national holiday. Motherland Defender's Day. If there are any fortuitous Russians here, at the GTAF (if any) - congratz, bratya. Fighting airplanes are good. Very sexy toys. We'll show the 'Kuzkina Mat' to the ETs. Someday. *gta star*
@pinky - That's a big plane, it's got 8 engines. However, I don't think it's as big as the Antonov or the Airbus A380, eventhough is has more engines.

Pat
This is a bit random, but my great uncle Robert Tucker invented the bombracks on the P-32 Lightning. Not a very popular plane, but still. I think it was used in WWII. /Rated good. Edit: Wow, it must be a very unpopular plane. I can't find any pictures of it on Google.. pinky
@pinky - That's a big plane, it's got 8 engines. However, I don't think it's as big as the Antonov or the Airbus A380, eventhough is has more engines. The KM is a lot bigger, twice the weight almost and it's carrying capacity is massive. The WIG aircraft which Boeing are now developing not only carry miles more but are mega efficient compared to standard planes or boats. The KM only uses the front 8 engines to reach cruise speed then shuts them off and run on the rear two. These machines are the future of heavy load transport if anyone cares about fuel economy. There is no comparison in tons per gallon for shifting materials. It is only a shame the Soviet Block started breaking up or these would be more common now, the bigger they are the more stable they become and only military projects would have pushed them farther. In civil conditions it will be decades before they get the funding they deserve, shame as they truly are the way forward. The only civil versions will of course be the Pelican as Boeing can afford it, that and they will have a complete cornerstone of a new market. Watch this space. Crokey
Guppy for the win, in my yonger days of plane spotting at Manchester Airport, mainly for the cracking Burger Van there, I managed to spot all five of the Airbus ones, although No. 3 is apparently out of service now. But I'm more of a Civilian aircraft fan, and more likely the older ones, like the DC-8 and Fokkers, as that always drags a out a double-take in someone when you say it quickly. And I was fan of the designs on them back when fancy designs on planes were nothing like they are now, for example Braniff International, those planes and the stewardesses, very Austin Powers. As for traveling in them, I'm not that keen on Airbus's they're always cramped and I always feel the the plastic used will break if you happen to f*rt too loudly, so Boeings for the win there. Picolini
Damn... so much going on in this topic, can't keep my thoughts straight! About the big planes... don't like any of them! I think they are ugly, and just like Semi's, not useful for anything except hauling sh*t. Now fighters, they're the sports/super cars of the air, love'm! The Pugachev's Cobra is an amazing maneuver! I've actually tried to get this move down in GTA with the Hydra's thruster movement and I've kinda gotten it to work. With some handling changes I could get it better. If I really messed with the handling I could get a Shamal to do it (no "thrust vectoring", if you can call what the hydra does that) even, but regular flight would be impossible. It'd be a purely stunt handling line. Basically just up the elevator force... Here's a video of me trying it in an SU-30Mkk http://youtube.com/watch?v=g7Q37bK11uk I've done a bunch a lot better since this though. Oh and there's no sound... deal with it The trick is to use the SCM Hook (plane speed limit remover). Load this up... Get your thrusters just before they are in the vertical flight mode so at the flick of the button sets it into vertical flight (hover mode). Now try to get as much speed as possible (which is hard with the thrusters pointing down so much, I suggest greatly increasing thrust to about 5 and lowering drag to 1.0 [1=0 drag] then diving from high up). Keep accelerating the WHOLE time! Get level, then tap the button to set it into vertical flight mode (only tap it!). At the same moment you tap into vertical flip pull back on the stick so you point upwards. This is when you will fly forward while the nose is pointing up, doing the maneuver. After you go for a bit, this is at your discretion just remember you lose speed quickly with this maneuver, tap back into horizontal flight mode (you can hold it if you want to increase your speed rapidly, again up to you). Remember you should always be at full throttle to make it it go through the whole thing smoothly (although there will be a jerk when switching back into horizontal mode after completely the move). There ya go... with some practice you can do it pretty nicely. The problem for me is only tapping into vertical flight mode, I hold it for a second, which means it takes longer to get back into horizontal mode which = crappy looking maneuver. Mark
Haha I still laugh at how the Bear was intercepted from sound picked up by that Sonar network on the sea bed. Noisy f*cker! One would argue that the Sea Moster isn't really a plane at all...in fact the US military were thinking of making a Hercules sized aircraft with very efficient engines using ground effect. Long-range movement on the cheap! Right. Cause for argument. In today's world, it is no longer about "Fastest = win" anymore. Days of the XB-70, A-12 (SR-71), Mig-25 and XF-108 are over. However, do such types now have a role when todays air superiority fighters, whilst being a lot more agile and featuring much better missile countermeasures, simply cannot fly at the same speeds? Surely A difference of Mach 1 between such aircraft, along with the faster aircraft having "Look down, shoot down" capability like the Mig-25 and very advanced missiles on board would mean such an aircraft could have a role to play against standard fighters of today like the F-22A and Typhoon. *gta star*
^Hmm, doesn't look like an Airbus A380. For a start, the A380 has two floors and four engines, doesn't look big enough that plane. Obviously, they have made some serious modifications to that plane, looks totally different. @pinky - The Airbus A380 is the biggest passenger plane. However, people say that Antonov is the biggest Cargo plane, but obviously it's not. The Antonov only has 6 engines, that plane that you posted has 8 and two at the rear, making a total of 10. I don't understand, it was in the paper a while ago that the biggest Cargo plane landed in Manchester Airport, the 'Antonov'.

I think you have a point Auron, during some research into Metal Gear aircraft I discovered the YF12A and it would certainly not be bothered by a mere F22. It can shoot aircraft down from over 50 thousand feet and it's missiles were fully tested to do so from well over mach2. It is also one of the best looking aircraft on the planet in my opinion, it is also unofficially the fastest being quicker than standard Blackbirds. Unfortunately only three were ever made, one being badly damaged in a landing crash. This was later used to build one of the Blackbird trainers. More YF info. @*gta star* : The KM probably deosn't count as it isn't really an accepted form of transport and they were just prototypes. Same thing applies to the YF12 for the speed record.
