Well, update on the SG saga: sold it. Some people said it was normal, others said it could be damaged, on the meanwhile I spent more time looking at the crack rather than playing it. I suspected it could have some slight damage on the wood itself because #1 if the paint lost a chip it defenitely took a nice knock, and #2 the previous owner had retouched the crack on the upper side, yet the retouch paint started to crack on me meaning something could be moving underneath indeed.

Good news is that I got back the money I paid for it and a small extra and I also got to own such a great guitar, after spending almost 5 years with my starter Strat I could feel what a guitar more suited to the genre of music I play is like and get a better idea what feels better imo. On the other hand it really saddens me to let it go, I really liked that guitar. Well, back on seeking for a new keeper axe, but if I found another one of these in good condition I'd buy it. So, I'm considering either another Epi SG 400 or Pro, an Epi LP Standard (yep I've said the SGs are more confortable and a better bang for the money, but if i got an opportunity on one of those, I quite like them as well) or an LTD EC256 - pretty much solid body, set neck, hardtail and passive hums.

That's cool that you got your cash back, and I don't blame you for unloading it. If it bothered you that much you were never going to be happy with it. Better to get rid of it and get something you're happy with.

On the meanwhile, my father in law (girlfriend's father), knowing the whole situation, proposed me to sell me his guitar, which I can't remember if it was a Jackson or an Ibanez, for a symbolic price. The guitar is quite old from back in the day he used to play on some bands but it's really nice, comes with it's hardcase and a custom built wireless system he built on it long ago (he had cut part of the body having the antenna bar built into it, covered on the back with a cover matching the stock ones).

I personally wouldn't buy that sort of guitar from anyone else since I prefer hardtails, but it's a price way too good and from someone who I can trust. On the other hand I know it has a lot of meaning for him even though he doesn't play it for ages, he even told me he wouldn't sell it to anyone else.

that's cool, but wouldn't the combined expense of the guitar and the parts end up costing the same as a horizon or something? :p

Well, maybe he got it from some friend or relative or paid a really low price for it? Otherwise I'd agree with you, it would be quite a waste of money buying a guitar that requires to mod the crap out of it to suit your preferences.

Nobody makes exactaly what I want, so I have to make it lol

It's cheaper to do this than look at a custom shop, plus I find it fun rebuilding guitars.

The horizon is an arch top, which I don't want.

The guitar I bought new, total with the guitar and parts is $1,900 cad.

Well, if the final product makes you happy and you have fun putting it together, who am I to judge! Just don't forget to show it off when it's ready.

Made the trussrod and cavity covers then mocked up everything quickly.

The screw tabs on the chrome grover mini's are in a different position than the stock black ones :/

Thanks, not much of an update, got the blade switch holes filled, have to take the guitar to the GM dealer so they can use their gun on it to get a match for the paint.

If I had the money to, I'd like to buy a Tele someday as well. I think they look so cool and have quite an art-deco feel on them, plus the sound would be very interesting to play some Led Zeppelin and such.

Problem is that type of music is not what I play the most, I think these Teles are quite overpriced for what they offer (not to speak they just live on from their heritage and that guitar isn't exactly cutting edge in terms of features, considering even though Fender has developed much better bridges they still insist in using the classic obsolete woobly one without singular adjustable saddles, or the truss rod only accessible by disassembling the neck making it a pain in the ass to adjust it) and, of course, after buying the Jackson I'm quite short on money to spare. Gotta save for more important stuff now, but well, if you get one make sure to share it with us!

You seem to be thinking of something like the American Special or American Professional Teles. Am. std. and mexico teles have individual string saddles, as well as a now-conventional headstock truss rod adjustment cavity.

so I think I'm about to pull the trigger on this little gem

http://shop.fender.com/en-US/electric-guitars/telecaster/classic-player-baja-telecaster/0141502303.html

range of tonality options is really appealing.

I've got Strats and PRS but this would be my first Tele.

I say go for it! Funny you should mention it since I just got this the other day!

JZ2CVfm.jpg

It's a partsocaster but all of the electronics are from the Baja Tele!

Like you say, there's quite an impressive breadth to the tones available because of the S-1 switch, which can knock the parallell/serial PU selections out of phase for some wacky tones

Teles are a lot like jeans in that you should have at least one, they're difficult to mangle, and it works with almost anything.

IIRC the Baja Teles have some rather baseball bat-y necks -- something I'd personally prefer over this regular Mexico neck that's on mine, although I understand that not everyone wants a chunky neck.

What would you end up paying? Any good deals? :)

no good sales at the moment, but the one I'm looking at comes with a $100 gift card.

which means I could get a great hard case to go with it.

I'm probably gonna grab the classic tweed case with velvet plush interior.

pics will be coming soon as I get my hands on it.

Awesome!! Those tweed cases are the bomb. My dad has his best stuff in those. I'd love to get one for my own tele, I'll see if I can grab one from work for cheap with my employee discount

If not, a Mono bag might be better for me since I'll be studying guitar in the biggest city in the country for at least 3 years now, and that would work with all my axes.

If you've played it already, how's the V-neck feel?

I'm the kind of person who often plays with my thumb hanging over the top of the neck to grab the Estring so it feels pretty great in my hands. I also tried some Modern Player models and the double humbucker HH model. they sound fine but none of them have the range of the Baja.

it really feels like a 2thousand dollar guitar in an affordable package. can't wait to pick it up. hopefully this weekend. I don't know if this is too much too soon, but I've also had my eye on this...

Sweet-looking guitar, buut I do keep my statement while that's a real classic Tely, it ends up being the one with the most outdated features as well. I mean... hopefully you won't need to adjust that truss rod, won't you? :p

yeah I mean, agree to disagree I guess.

the features are not "outdated," they're exactly what I wanted. I've already got several modern 'traditional' sounding electric guitars with all of the "cutting edge" features. this one was supposed to be different. this is the sound that I wanted. this is the style that I wanted. the saddles are great. the bridge is not "wobbly." I'm also not a touring/professional musician, I'm just playing locally or with friends/family. this is my only guitar so far without an accessible truss rod but it so rarely needs to be adjusted that it's not a big deal at all.

Don't take me wrong, as I said it's a beauty of a guitar and I know they sound amazing. Just my personal view of things (but I also used to think Floyd Rose bridges were an overcomplicated pointless feature yet I ended up buying one, so...), it's nothing personal neither a critique. Please don't take what I've said as if I was despising your new axe, it's nothing like that - my bad if I acted in such a way. Just have fun with it!

BTW, even though you "just" play locally, that means nothing, you'd beat me up all day in the 6 string, I'm too lazy to even play with friends so who am I to talk!

You have the thumb in common with Metheny ;)

The Modern Player guitars are -excellent- bang for buck, but like you say, a Baja beats a double humbucker model(I traded my HH tele for my Baja Frankenstein :p ). Lipstick PU is a must!

How's the Baja Tele into that particular Blues Junior?
