String broke off while recording, switching from 0.09-0.42 to 0.10-0.46, have to set up the WHOLE DAMN THING again, from bridge height to intonation.

The bridge height is a special pain in the ass without a sh*tload of tools I don't have.

The guy who set it up before didn't even do it properly.

Holy sh*t, I just finished setting the PRS up, I've tried it for a little and..oh man it plays like a dream, really low action, no fret buzz, it's nearly 6 AM but damn was it worth it.

Hey is asking for repair tips off topic?

No, go on. I (and probably many others) am happy to answer if I can.

Nothing quite like a phresh, well-set up guitar. How is the tone with thicker strings?

Also, do you guys have workbenches? I improvised one in stead of a computer desk:

The tone's good, feels thicker. The best change I see is that everything sounds way more in tune, better, and it's way easier to play.

I used to have something similar to a workbench but now I just put it on my bed and break my back and knees if I have to do anything more than changing the strings.

Nice guitar, I like the way/technique PRS do their finishes.

The Fender people won't answer my technician Sigvards' calls. Thinking of just getting a refund and getting a Gibson ES-139

tn2_95524.jpg

Rare guitars, they're not even on Gibson's websites. Feels amazing to play, very versatile as well.

Yikes! I'd rather have 2 brand new Gibsons for that price!

Did a setup for a guy who just bought this used epi 339:

10996314_901119589910321_709045941197934

Pickups sound great but look nasty as hell.

11050156_901119599910320_782558737427774

Don't know if you can tell, but that is some reaaally dry wood right there. Lots of open grain.

11024786_901119586576988_246029100715209

Did a lot of cleaning.

10628039_901119593243654_144809164293010

All set up! Did some truss rod adjustment as the neck was curving the wrong way, lowered the AED strings and raised the GBE strings, intonated the guitar, tested the electronics and action, and delivered it to a (hopefully!) satisfied customer.

It's pedantic stuff but it's a real treat to just sit down and do this type of thing. It's very serene and sobering. It's nice to leave the digitalized modern world for a few hours and sit down with some woodwork and just take your time.

I'm looking at semi-hollows again because of the sh*t concerning the Starcaster. I'm really, really keen on this AS 120:

60_1859660622.jpg

It's essentially an AS 200 (As used by John Scofield) except it's made in Korea. It's got the Super 58 pickups and I could probably get it for 400, but the seller isn't answering my inquiries.

edit again: The AS 120 is being sold. Damn.

edit no. one million: Almost bought this today:

^Beautiful! What made step away from it?

I've been trying and failing to write this really gentle, piano-like piece. Just can't seem to find a meaningful melody to go with the intro. Ah, well, just gotta keep trying.

It's hard to pair distinct melody with ambient music. gl.

I think the guitar is ugly as sin, but in a beautiful way. I didn't buy it because it had no name on the headstock (one-off by a Japanese luthier), the seller didn't know what PUs were in it, the neck joint seemed cracked, and because I didn't want to act on an impulse and regret it later. I told the seller that if he still needed to sell it later, he knew where to find me.

Hmm, I see, a bit of a weird deal. Still, maybe you can get it at a lower price if he still needs to sell it. That would be quite cool!

Yeah, it seems my chord writing is in a weird stage of stagnancy, for some reason. I guess it could help to take some time off from the guitar and use a keyboard for this. I'm not really that good at keys, though.

I'm self-taught and today I played (for hire) at a concert which made $1800. Work on it.

Because of unforeseen consequences, I had to play an Epiphone Dot on today's gig. Played it thru my Peavey Classic 30 using my usual rig. I'm going to sound like a narcissist but f*ck my tone is good. Sounds legit despite being a cheaper epi.

I was enjoying playing it a few weeks ago (played my dad's synth), but I haven't really got any keyboards of my own. Really fun, but it seems hard to become as comfortable with keys as I am with the guitar. It's very useful for chord writing, though.

Yeah, the visualization makes it easier to compose chords based on the melody.

My favourite guitarists at the moment are

Guthrie govan

Misha mansoor

Tosin abasi

Josh homme.

I'm currently thinking about getting myself a tom Anderson hollow drop top classic, not sure if I'm willing to pay nearly 2k and wait 6+ months for it.

Really wanting that ES 139... Look at the back of it:

$_58.JPG

Really, the absolute best Gibson guitar I've ever played. I've only got 690 EUR readily available, which is exactly half of what I need.

Any suggestions for a semi? I was going to buy a used Ibanez AS 120 but it was sold before I could.

the g is flat, or the intonation is off :-s

are you completely 100% on the intonation? did you intonate it in playing position?

I also feel that the intonation is slightly off. Speaking of, I still haven't fixed my old Strat's intonation.

I spent the weekend working on my keyboard skills. It's actually pretty easy to transfer knowledge from instrument to another. Still unsure on what my next guitar should be...

Important to practice proper technique on the keys, else you'll get double tendinitis.

What type of Strat is it?

It's an antique burst Strat. Standard series, I think... It was my first "big boy" electric guitar :p I still have my first guitar lying around (it was one of those small ones). Got it on my 5th or 6th birthday!
I need to get a keyboard to have at home. I've been playing my dad's Yamaha, but it's at my grandparents' house. What do you use, Marw?

Oh, that's a tasteful Strat. Tortoise guard, yes?

I use a Yamaha p105. 88 graded hammer weighted keys. Great sounds, fair price. Difficult to find a case, but otherwise great.

Exactly, tortoise guard! :D At the time I was torn between that one and a "natural finish" Strat, you know? I'm glad my dad got me that one, though, as I'm not really into the natural ones anymore.

Pretty cool keyboard, dude! Sounds pretty good from what I've seen on Youtube. How much did you pay for it? All I can find in nearby stores are ones with 61 or 76 keys, which may be enough, but I'm not too sure and wouldn't want to make an uninformed choice.

Tell me which ones, I'm also an avid pianist, I've done a lot of keys gigs, and also arranged for a lot of pianists. I can guide you away from sh*tty ones.

e: mine cost about 500

I've been looking at Yamahas, mostly. There's a PSR-F50 and a PSR E243 at the store for a reasonable price. Both have 61 keys, btw. I don't know... If it were for a guitar, I'd gladly invest a greater amount of money, but since I'm just starting out on keys I'm looking at affordable options. What do you think, man?

I think you need weighted keys. No ifs or buts, in my opinion. Non-weighted plastic keys ruins the feel and IMO, and therefore not only does the music suffer, but it may stagnate progress in learning. I speak from personal experience but it is still just my opinion on the subject. The fact that I spent considerable money (500 bucks is my entire monthly paycheck) further motivated me to become better. Not that I needed the motivation, as I think of it as a prerequisite of any professional musician to be adequate on the claviature :miranda: and I want to be a proper professional :monocle:

I just tried my father's 2013 Gibson SGJ. Holy crap what a fantastic guitar, I was completely in shock. I never ever play solid-bodies or 24-fretters but damn, what a fantastic guitar. Sounded incredible in my Peavey Classic 30, I would've never guessed it was an SG. Liked the neck too. I didn't know he had it, turns out he kept it a secret because he knew mom would flip if she ever found out

Ahahah, your dad sounds like a really cool guy! I like how he kept it hidden :D
I've played a few SGs and liked them. Aesthetically, it's somewhat weird, but very playable, in my experience.

I think I might spend a bit more on a keyboard, then. If I don't end up giving in to the temptation of buying another axe in the meantime...
I just noticed I've played classical almost exclusively these last few days. It's just so awesome to play Tárrega or Barrios on the balcony on a sunny day!
